History
Stormbreaker was a mighty hammer that came into creation following the fight between Thor and Beta Ray Bill at Skartheim. After the battle, Bill began to feel guilt over his victory, now feeling that Mjolnir was Thor's by right. In a compromise, as Bill fairly won the battle, Odin had the Dwarves of Nidavellir create a new hammer made for the cyborg Korbonite warrior, crafted from the same Uru metal as Mjolnir. Odin ordered the Dwarves of Nidavellir, led by Eitri, to forge a new weapon after Beta Ray Bill fairly defeated Thor in a trial by combat at Skartheim but refused to claim Mjolnir as his own. The master blacksmiths crafted the weapon from mystical Uru metal, using a unique forging process unlike any seen since the beginning of time. During its creation, Odin unleashed the full force of his magical Odin Force into the mold to imbue the weapon with its divine properties. Beta Ray Bill then reached into the molten pool to pull the weapon out, immediately absorbing its mystical energy and transforming into a cosmic protector. Odin officially bestowed the name Stormbreaker upon the completed weapon before returning Mjolnir to Thor. Following its creation, the weapon was immediately put to use as Beta Ray Bill, Thor, and Lady Sif departed Asgard to defend the remaining Korbinite people from an incoming invasion by the fire demon Surtur. During a conflict between Beta Ray Bill and Thor, who had been turned into an Herald of Galactus, Bill prevented Mjolnir from returning to its bearer's hand. Seeing no options to reach an agreement, Thor called Stormbreaker and destroyed it by hitting it against Mjolnir. (Thor v6 #3)
Overview
In appearance, Stormbreaker was a unique, mystical bludgeoning and slicing weapon designed specifically to serve as a symbol of cosmic justice and equal power to Mjolnir. It possessed a highly disciplined, magical resonance that responded only to those deemed worthy, maintaining a cold, unyielding nature toward any individuals who lacked the integrity to lift it. The weapon functioned as a direct channel for divine energy, reflecting a strict metaphysical hierarchy where its absolute loyalty belonged entirely to its designated wielder. Its physical design focused on providing maximum striking force and versatility during intergalactic combat, ensuring its master could defend entire civilizations from catastrophic threats. Regarding its construction and visual traits, the weapon was crafted entirely from golden-hued Uru metal and featured a distinct, rounded mallet-style hammerhead on one side. The reverse side of the head transitioned into a sharp, functional axe blade, combining blunt-force and slashing capabilities on a single short handle. The handle itself was wrapped in a protective grip and concluded with a leather strap, giving it a compact yet imposing aesthetic that projected immediate authority and menace on the battlefield. The cosmic weapon Stormbreaker demonstrated an advanced suite of supernatural and elemental capabilities during its initial deployment from Asgard. It exhibited the power of recall to instantly fly back into its wielder's hand with irresistible force after being thrown, or to seek them out across vast distances when summoned. For defensive purposes, it utilized a mystical energy barrier when spun rapidly, absorbing, magnifying, and reflecting incoming physical impacts or hostile energy blasts back at opponents. It displayed interdimensional teleportation, allowing its wielder to swing the weapon at a specific pitch to open portals capable of instantly transporting groups through space to realms like Asgard. Its offensive capabilities included weather manipulation, which enabled the user to call down colossal lightning strikes, summon powerful storms, and generate localized whirlwinds to devastate enemy ranks. The hammer also projected powerful concussive blasts of mystical energy and could produce localized ground tremors when struck forcefully against the terrain. Additionally, it demonstrated a transformation enchantment that allowed the user to strike it against the ground to instantly swap between a mortal form and a superhuman state, while simultaneously providing a protective aura that allowed its wielder to survive the oxygen-deprived vacuum of outer space. Films
- In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Stormbreaker made a number of appearances in the shared continuity:
- In Avengers: Infinity War, Stormbreaker made its first live-action film. Stormbreaker was designed by the dwarves of Nidavellir to be the greatest weapon in Asgard's history, designed for their king and capable of summoning the Bifrost Bridge on its own. However, it was never forged, and the dwarves had been pushed to near-extinction by Thanos, with Eitri as the sole survivor. In 2018, Thor, Rocket, and Groot went to Nidavellir to forge a weapon. Upon arriving, the typically lively forges of Nidavellir were cold and barren, littered with broken parts. Eitri appeared before them and learned that Thor needed a weapon, so he decided to forge Stormbreaker. With Thor and Rocket's help, Eitri opened the cage around Nidavellir and re-lit the forge, melting down ingots of Uru and pouring it into a mold. He then shattered the mold, revealing the axe's blade and weight, but misplaced the handle for the weapon. Seeing that Thor was close to death after taking the brunt of the power, Groot decided they could not wait for Eitri to find or create a metal handle; he grasped the red hot pieces of metal with one of his arms and then cut the arm off to serve as the handle, truly finishing Stormbreaker whereupon the weapon then revived Thor. Stormbreaker was used by Thor to summon the Bifrost Bridge to Wakanda. It was then used during the battle against the Outriders, augmenting Thor's own lightning massively. It was also used to destroy the Outrider Dropships and the remaining Threshers. Notably, it was the only weapon to severely injure Thanos by impaling him in the chest soon after the Infinity Gauntlet was completed. However, Thor intentionally aimed for Thanos' chest, which allowed Thanos the chance to activate the Infinity Gauntlet and eliminate half of all life in the universe. As Thanos teleported away in a wormhole, Stormbreaker fell out of his chest and to the ground, smeared with his blood.
