History

The Dwarves

According to myth, the Dwarves arose from tunnelling maggots that were within the rotting flesh of the Giant Ymir after the Asgardian All-Father Odin breathed life into them. This gave them wit and the shape of man with the Dwarves emerging in the realm of Nidavellir and they dwelt beneath the mountain of Ymir-Krul. (Thor v2 #80)

Long ago, a group of Dwarves forged an alliance with the Frost Giants where they sought to topple the rule of Asgard. To that end, they bred one of their kind to take the form of Thor Odinson who they used to frame the real god of thunder. This was as part of a plot for them to use the fake Thor to murder Odin himself but they were discovered and their 'Thor' was killed in battle. (Thor: Trial of Thor v1 #1)

During the Serpent War, Iron Man pled with Odin to let him use his workshops to make weapons for his Avengers in order to fight the Serpent and the Worthy. Odin granted him access to Svartalfheim in Asgard where he meets Splitlip who agreed to help Iron Man make new weapons. To acquire his own enhancements, Tony Stark merged the systems of the Bleeding Edge Armor with Uru thus creating the Iron Destroyer Iron Man Armor which he came to use in the battle against the Serpent. (Invincible Iron Man v1 #506) Iron Man concluded that he needs to place his armor into the Uru in order to enhance it but then he and the Dwarves were attacked by a Golem that made by Smoke Elves who served the Serpent. (Invincible Iron Man v1 #507) The Golem began leeching off of Iron Man's armor until the Dwarves helped Stark to defeat their attacker. (Invincible Iron Man v1 #508) While Iron Man prepares to take the Asgardian weapons to his allies, Splitlip and his Dwarves were given the approval to have Iron Man dispose of the captive Smoke Elves. Iron Man then gave the Smoke Elves the choice of either being dealt with by the Dwarves or taking their leave with them choosing the latter option. (Invincible Iron Man v1 #509) After Odin left Asgard, the enhancements of the Uru weapons and the Iron Destroyer were gone leading to Stark venting the Uru from the suit's structure and giving it back to the Dwarven forges along with the rest of the weapons to be melted. (Invincible Iron Man v1 #510)

As a result of Malekith's invasion of the Nine Realms, the Dwarves of Nidavellir made a hidden outpost in Midgard at Iceland. The outpost contained a vault filled with precious Uru metal that was to be safeguarded. However, Amora the Enchantress bewitched Amadeus Cho who was the Hulk into attacking the outpost and stealing the Uru. (Totally Awesome Hulk v1 #6)

During Malekith's war on the realms, many Light Elf refugees were forced to abandon their home in Alfheim and sought shelter in Nidavellir with the Dwarves honouring their treaty to care for them but were struggling to feed the large number of them. They later came under creatures from the fiery minions from Muspelheim which killed many of the refugees. (Mighty Thor v2 #20)

A group of Dwarves of Nidavellir were captured by the space pirate Nebula who tortured them until one broke and built her a axe able to cleave through the barriers between dimensions. She then killed the other captives whilst she summoned the Naglfar Armada to serve her commands after acquiring the horn that could control it. (Asgardians of the Galaxy v1 #1)

Nidavellir later was attacked by the mysterious God of Hammers who had been attacking places linked to Thor across the Ten Realms. Forgemaster Eitri and many Dwarves were killed in this attack with Thor arriving too late at the scene where he came to bury his old friend. It was later revealed that the killer was none other than Mjolnir itself when the God Tempest within it had merged with the evil of the Mangog. This allowed the storm within the hammer to take form and intelligence where she looked to murder Thor and those close to him. (Thor v6 #20)

Overview

They were noted for being skilled weapon masters capable of crafting great mystical relics with some being able to attack planets. (Doctor Strange v5 #4)

It was at the Furnaces of Nidavellir that the Dwarves conducted their forging. (Thor v1 #339) They made use of Gleipnir that was ribbon-thin metal that was forged by six impossible things and was stronger than any mere iron chain. (Avengers: Back to Basics v1 #2)

  • In Avengers: Infinity War, the Dwarves were depicted as a race of diminutive giants in the live-action film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They were inhabitants of an artificial world named Nidavellir that consisted of mechanical rings around a caged neutron star which they used as a power source. The Dwarves were famous smiths that crafted mighty weapons for Asgard through their forge which had never been shut in centuries. The Mad Titan Thanos struck the forge where he took the Dwavres hostage to force their chief weapon-smith Eitri to build him a gauntlet that could contain the power of the Infinity Stones. Eitri complied in the belief that his people would be spared but after completing his task Thanos had the Dwarves killed with the smith the only survivor whose hands were turned to stone to prevent him from building anymore weapons. The forge was also damaged with Eitri left on the derelict habitation rings with him later being found by Thor who sought the Dwarf's aid in building a weapon to kill the Mad Titan.
