History
The Mind Gem was one of the Infinity Gems, blue in color, able to invade and manipulate every mind across existence. The user may also gain formidable psychic and psionic abilities.
The Kree Supreme Intelligence knew of it and mentally manipulated natives of the planet to unearth it as part of a subtle step in a byzantine plot to eventually control the dormant power of Rick Jones. The Supreme Intelligence besieged the planet with destructive automatons and ensured Jones and his partner, Captain Marvel would become stranded there at a point when their minds were in danger of merging. The leader of the Denebian underground resistance, who was in the possession of the gem, offered Mar-Vell and Rick a solution to their plight by having their minds enter the Gem to sort themselves out, but the process manifested as a violent mental struggle that was broadcast to the planet's inhabitants by the Gem, intensifying the already bloody war across its surface. This was secretly the intention of the resistance's cyborg General, whose mechanically indifferent mind saw a violently definitive end to the war as the only path to peace. Rambu, a less-cyberized soldier of the resistance, attempted to prevent this when he learned of the General's plan, and with the help of a mental construct of Rick's, went into the Gem to break up the partners' fight. Captain Marvel and Rick Jones emerged from the Gem with their minds intact and were able to continue on their journey to confront the Supreme Intelligence. The Gem remained abandoned in the resistance tunnels beneath Deneb IV, having lost its purpose to the Denebians. (Captain Marvel v1 #45)
The Mind Gem was owned by the Grandmaster, the only one of the Elders of the Universe who guessed at the Infinity Gems' full potential. He engaged Thanos in a war game on a mental plane with the Mind Gem as the prize. However, the Grandmaster was deceived by Thanos, and was rendered brain-dead. Thanos made the Mind Gem part of the Infinity Gauntlet.
The Mind Gem remained part of the Gauntlet until Adam Warlock was forced to separate it into its parts, at which point the Gem was given to Moondragon of the Infinity Watch. Moondragon used it to augment her already-formidable mental abilities.
Along with the other Infinity Gems, the Mind Gem was stolen by Rune and scattered across that entity's native reality. Adam Warlock is currently seeking them out.
After the Infinity Stones returned, the Illuminati believed that the cosmic relics were too dangerous to be left out in the open. Thus, they went to acquire the stones and place them in their care. The Mind Stone was discovered to had resided within he collective unconscious of the entire universe with it being drawn into the physical plane from that realm. (New Avengers: Illuminati v2 #2)

Alternate Versions
- In Ultimate Comics Ultimates v1 #17 (2012), an alternate version of the Mind Gem appeared in Earth-1610 set in the Ultimate Marvel universe. Its origins were tied to the Nine Realms where long ago there arose a Jotunheimr giant named Hidelbard who was the most astute of his kin and noted for his intelligence where he wielded the sword Gambantein where none could defeat him. However, Odin came to challenge the giant where through trickery he managed to defeat him and drained his intelligence with Gambantein with Hidelbard's mind being distilled into the Mind Stone. The tremendous mental acuity of the old giant was concentrated in the stone allowing the user could take control of the mind of any person and convince them to follow their commands.
