History

Origin

Thanos's Gauntlet in Infinity Gauntlet v1 #1.

The Infinity Gauntlet was a special gauntlet that was able to contain the power of all six Infinity Gems.

The Silver Surfer as he tracked Thanos to a distant shrine, where he discovered the Mad Titan already in possession of the completed artifact. Thanos revealed that he had finally assembled all six gems onto his left glove, which he explicitly dubbed the Infinity Gauntlet, and boasted of his transformation into a god. To demonstrate his newfound supremacy, he engaged in a brief but devastating confrontation with both the Silver Surfer and Drax the Destroyer. Throughout the encounter, Thanos exerted effortless control over reality; he utilized the Power Gem to pummel Drax into unconsciousness and the Space Gem to teleport the Surfer across vast distances against his will. The issue concluded with Thanos asserting his absolute dominance over the physical and spiritual realms, leaving the Silver Surfer in a state of utter shock as he realized that the Gauntlet had made Thanos more powerful than any entity in the known universe. Mr. Fantastic came to convince his comrades in the Illuminati to gather the recently returned Infinity Gems after pointing out the danger they posed in the hands of an enemy. This saw them splitting to recover three remaining gems as the others along with the gauntlet had already been brought together by Richards. Once the gems were together, Richards bonded them to the gauntlet once more where he attempted to will it to destroy the Infinity Stones. However, the gauntlet had no effect on them as they were vital to the cosmos. The temptations of wielding the Infinity Gauntlet led to the Illuminati deciding that it was too dangerous to be in the hands of a single person and they decided to split the gems amongst themselves for safekeeping. During the Incursion crisis, the Illuminati gathered in secret by Black Panther where they operated to stop the Multiversal destruction of Earths. They came to recruit the Beast who came to inherit the care of the Mind Gem after the death of Xavier. He then accompanied the Illuminati as they went to the Incursion site in Pakistan where they used the stones to assemble the Infinity Gauntlet and use its power to push the other Earth away. Captain America was chosen to wield the Gauntlet but a feedback caused all the stones to shatter except for the Time Gem. Afterwards, Captain America was removed from the Illuminati with his memories of his membership in their group being erased from his mind. (New Avengers v3 #3)

Overview

In appearance, the Infinity Gauntlet functioned as a sleek, metallic golden glove that extended up to Thanos's mid-forearm, matching the existing aesthetic of his cosmic armor. The artifact was characterized by six distinct circular sockets designed to house the Infinity Gems, with five smaller gems positioned across the knuckles and a sixth, larger gem centered prominently on the back of the hand. When the user channelled their will into the gems, it caused them to pulse and glow with their unique individual hues of purple, blue, red, orange, yellow, and green. The glove itself appeared to be constructed from a heavy, segmented material that mimicked the look of articulated plate armor, allowing for full dexterity while maintaining a formidable, regal silhouette. It was shown to actually be the arm of the Infinity Armor that could be summoned to give its wearer incredible power. However, this suit of armor was said to be cursed and drew a great toll from its user. It was this reason that Thanos never called forth the armor and instead only used its gauntlet as a means of wielding the power of the Infinity Stones. He used the gauntlet to gather the stones after they were recovered by the Black Order but was defeated by the heroes of Earth. This allowed his son Thane to call forth the gauntlet and call the Infinity Armor as he became a bigger threat to the cosmos. Thanos worked with Earth's heroes to defeat him within the Heart of Infinity where the stones were first created whereupon he stripped the gauntlet from Thane whose body was being ravaged by the curse from wearing the Infinity Armor. It was then that Thanos and Thane vanished in the resultant explosion.
