Man-Spiders

In an effort to study human nature, Mister Hyde looked to see if people were given powers similar to Spider-Man if they would choose to be good or evil. Thus, he came to experiment with a serum that was similar to the Lizard Formula but loaded with arachnid enzymes instead. He then took in homeless orphans where he used the serum on them to give them powers similar to Spider-Man. In time, their actions would draw the attention of the real Spider-Man who would confront some of these impersonators. By this point, the serum began mutating them spider-creatures where one had transformed into a Man-Spider. The creature was captured and brought to Doctor Connors who used him to develop a cure. Overview

A Man-Spider in Savage Spider-Man v1 #1.

In appearance, a Man-Spider was a hulking, multi-limbed entity that possessed six distinct appendages extending from a powerful, elongated torso. The creature’s skin was covered in a dense, dark growth of coarse hair or bristles that replaced the smooth surface of human flesh. Its head was transformed into a bulbous, arachnid-like cranium featuring multiple sets of eyes, including two large primary eyes and several smaller ones situated above them. The mouth consisted of heavy, pincer-like mandibles capable of snapping with immense force, and the nose was replaced by a flattened, inhuman snout. Each of its four primary arms terminated in three-fingered hands equipped with sharp, curved talons, while its legs were similarly digitigrade and ended in hooked claws. The muscular structure was vastly enlarged compared to a human, giving the entity a hunched, predatory posture as it moved with a skittering gait. (Marvel Fanfare v1 #2)

In physical capabilities, the Man-Spider possessed a level of raw strength that far exceeded its previous human-based limits, allowing it to easily overpower multiple opponents and tear through thick foliage with its talons. Its primary method of mobility involved a skittering, multi-limbed crawl that granted it the ability to scale vertical rock faces and cavern walls with predatory speed. The creature's tactile sensitivity was heightened, enabling it to react to environmental shifts with a frantic, instinctive urgency. Each of its six limbs functioned with independent coordination, providing the entity with a constant, stable grip on uneven surfaces while simultaneously striking at nearby targets. Furthermore, the form retained a potent wall-crawling ability, though it relied more heavily on its sharp, hooked claws to anchor its massive weight into the surrounding terrain as it moved. (Marvel Fanfare v1 #2)

In sensory perception, the Man-Spider possessed a primal, heightened awareness that replaced its human reasoning with a series of sharp, instinctual reactions to the surrounding environment. Its multiple sets of eyes provided an expanded field of vision, allowing it to track movement from several angles simultaneously within the dark, prehistoric caverns it inhabited. The entity’s sense of touch was amplified through the coarse bristles covering its limbs, which detected subtle vibrations in the air and ground, alerting it to the presence of nearby threats or prey before they were visible. Its olfactory senses were similarly sharpened, as it used its flattened snout to catch the scent of others across great distances, leading it to follow trails with a single-minded, predatory focus. These combined sensory inputs created a constant state of hyper-vigilance, causing the creature to react with explosive, violent speed to any perceived shift in its immediate vicinity. In other media

Television

  • In Spider-Man; the Man-Spider appeared in the setting of the 1990s animated television series during the "Neogenic Nightmare" story arc. After Peter sought help from Doctor Mariah Crawford and consumed an experimental serum intended to cure his deteriorating powers, the medication backfired, triggering a grotesque biological shift that saw him sprout four additional functional arms from his torso. Despite his desperate attempts to find a remedy through the help of the X-Men and various scientists, his cellular structure eventually reached a breaking point, causing him to metamorphose into a massive, mindless arachnoid beast. This Man-Spider possessed immense physical strength, the ability to spit corrosive acid, and a primal instinct that completely suppressed Peter’s human consciousness. The creature rampaged across the rooftops of New York City, leading to a high-stakes pursuit by the vigilante Kraven the Hunter and the Punisher, both of whom viewed the beast as a lethal threat that needed to be neutralized. The ordeal only concluded when the Man-Spider was lured to a laboratory where he was eventually reverted to his human form.

Video games

  • In Spider-Man Unlimited, the Man-Spider appeared in the setting of the mobile video game. This version was part of a massive roster of multiversal Spider-People collected by S.H.I.E.L.D. to combat the Multiversal Sinister Six and the Inheritors. As a character, Man-Spider was classified within the game's card rarity system—often appearing as a Legendary or Titan tier unit—and featured a grotesque, multi-armed design that stood out against the more standard superhero costumes. In terms of gameplay, he provided specific statistical bonuses, such as a multiplier for combo points or increased score percentages during specific story events like the 'Spider-Verse' or 'Venomverse' updates. Players could level him up by 'fusing' him with other cards or using ISO-8 game currency to rank him up, allowing him to run longer and hit harder in the game’s endless runner stages. Despite his monstrous appearance, he functioned as a hero within the game’s mechanics, swinging through the streets of Manhattan and defeating Sinister Six clones with the same agility as Peter Parker.
  • In Marvel Rivals, a partially mutated Man-Spider appeared as an alternate skin for Spider-Man in the setting of the third-person hero shooter video game.
