History

Universal Century

The Gundams were the result of mecha technology development that came as a result of the use the Principality of Zeon's highly agile mobile suits in the Universal Century. These weapons were used during the early phase of the One Year War that provided the smaller nation a major tactical advantage over the much larger Earth Federation. Zeon's MS-05 Zaku I and the MS-06 Zaku II were highly agile mobile suits where their AMBAC systems and ability to be outfitted for a variety of missions and environments allowed them to outclass the Federation's conventional space. This saw the Earth Federation initiated Project V (Project Victory) that was a development program that aimed to close the gap with Zeon and produce a counterpart mobile suit design that had the capability of being mass-produced.

After Colony

The Gundams came to be the term given loosely to a number of mobile suits that were made use the alloy Gundarium θ in the After Colony era. They were developed by scientists in the colonies whose settlements came to be oppressed by the harsh rule of the United Earth Sphere Alliance. The Alliance had brutally suppressed the space colonies' push for independence, which led to a clandestine resistance movement across the various Lagrange points. Five exiled scientists, who had previously worked on the original Tallgeese prototype mobile suit, were commissioned by the resistance leader Dekim Barton to develop advanced, powerful mobile suits that could fight the Alliance forces on equal or superior terms. These new machines were designated "Gundams" due to their construction from a rare, virtually indestructible material called Gundanium alloy, which could only be produced in space and made them largely impervious to conventional weaponry. Each of the five scientists – Doctor J, Master O, Instructor H, Doktor S, and Professor G – secretly developed a single, unique Gundam in their respective colony clusters, tailoring each unit to a specific combat philosophy.

The original plan, conceived by Dekim Barton, had called for several space colonies to be intentionally crashed into Earth to cause widespread chaos and environmental devastation, after which the Gundams would descend to seize control of the survivors. The scientists, refusing to be a part of such a genocide, altered the mission at the last minute to a series of coordinated, unannounced guerrilla attacks against the Earth Sphere Alliance and, specifically, its secret military organization, OZ. The missions commenced with the five Gundams, disguised as a cluster of shooting stars, initiating atmospheric entry at various points across the globe. The Alliance and OZ, having somehow detected the incoming objects, were on alert. During the descent, the pilot known as Heero Yuy was intercepted in an atmospheric battle by the OZ ace pilot Zechs Merquise. Heero's Wing Gundam sustained damage and was forced to crash-land into the ocean, where he was found by the young pacifist Relena Peacecraft. Simultaneously, the other pilots – Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner, and Chang Wufei – began their independent campaigns, immediately engaging OZ bases and facilities across the Earth. The pilots, unaware of the other four's existence and operating with minimal intelligence, initially believed themselves to be the sole combatants, leading to early confusion and even conflict when they first encountered one another. Thus began the bitter, clandestine war for colonial independence, with the Gundams acting as a decentralized and unpredictable force against the formidable military might of the Alliance and OZ.

Cosmic Era

Gundam was an acronym for "General Unilateral Neuro-Link Dispersive Autonomic Maneuver" were a type of G-Weapon developed in the Cosmic Era where they required a powerful mobile suit operation system (M.O.S).

Anno Domini

Gundams was the name given to a number of advanced mobile suits that were created by Celestial Being in Anno Domini.

Post Disaster

Gundams was the term given to a series of mobile suits that were created 300 years ago during the Calamity War in the Post Disaster era.

Overview

In appearance, Gundam was a term that designated any mobile suit built from gundanium alloy. Gundam also tend to be exceptional units, more advanced than most other mobile suits of their time. Primarily, a Gundam was always a high-performance, advanced machine, often a prototype unit, built with experimental or unique technology far superior to contemporary models. They typically featured exceptionally durable armor that made them formidable in combat. Aesthetically, they were almost universally identifiable by specific design traits, including a humanoid shape, two eyes, a "pharaoh chin," and, most notably, a distinctive V-fin antenna on the head. The color schemes often incorporated the classic white, blue, red, and yellow accents, though exceptions existed. They typically served as the main mobile suit for the protagonist and were equipped with unique and powerful weaponry, such as beam rifles and beam sabers, that weren't generally available to standard forces. Ultimately, despite the varying technical definitions across different continuities, Gundams consistently represented the pinnacle of military engineering within their respective settings, serving as powerful, often symbolic, instruments of war.

Known models of Gundams included:

  • RX-78-2 Gundam :
  • RX-0 Unicorn Gundam'

Notes

  • Gundams were created by Kunio Okawara where they featured in the setting of the Mobile Suit Gundam universe.
  • The Japan Self-Defense Forces had built an approximately full scale RX-78-3 Gundam with styrofoam in its show and contained a simulation pod. [1]
