The Earth Federation is a government that features in Gundam.

History

The Earth Federation (Japanese: 地球連邦, Hepburn: Chikyū Renpō?) was a global government that was established in the pre-Universal Century during the 21st century. As a result, overpopulation Earth began to experienc famines, outbreaks of disease, and wars over living space, food, and resources. In order to relieve Earth of the burden and allow it to heal, the Earth Federation announced the Space Colonization Plan. The Earth Federation began the construction of orbital habitats, based on the designs and research of Gerard K. O'Neill, and located in the Earth-Lunar Lagrangian Points. The colonies called Bunches were then organized into administrative sectors called Sides. While most of the human population was forced to relocate to the colonies as part of the Space Colonization Plan, the wealthy and influential members were able to remain on Earth. This gave rise to the popular image of the Earth Federation as 'Earth-Born Elite', living comfortably on Earth while the ordinary populace, for the most part, has been forced to live in space. In order to maintain and satisfy energy concerns, the Earth Federation launches Solar Power Station Satellites, which broadcast energy to power stations on the ground. In addition, the Federation also launched the Jupiter Energy Fleet, which collect helium-3, hydrogen and methane from the upper atmosphere of the gas giant.

The One Year War was a year-long, full-scale conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, who declared war upon the Federation under the name of independence. The war was ultimately won by the Earth Federation at a heavy cost. The Republic of Zeon was re-established and the Zeon army was disbanded. However, for many years on, several terrorist incidents were perpetrated by remnant Zeon loyalists, most famously the Operation Stardust by the Delaz Fleet. The Gryps Conflict was a full-scale civil war between the Titans, an elite Federation counter-insurgency task force, and the anti-Titans AEUG/Karaba alliance. The war was brewing during the mid-U.C. 0080s when the Titans massacred the civilian population of the Side 1's 30 Bunch colony with G3 nerve gas to suppress demonstrations against Federation policies. It fully erupted after AEUG launched surprise attacks on Side 7's Green Noa 2 (later renamed Gryps) colony and stole three RX-178 Gundam Mk-II prototypes. The war was tactically won by the AEUG forces, although the true winner was actually the Axis forces. The conflict resulted in the total destruction of the Titans space fleet and huge loss from the AEUG side (30% of the Federation's total fleet at the time).

During the first Neo Zeon movement, the Earth Federation was severely weakened by the loss of the Titans and relied primarily on AEUG to fight their battle until they could put together a military resistance. Meanwhile the civilian side of the Earth Federation cowed toward the newly-formed Neo Zeon believing they could appease them. In the end, the Earth Federation won the war by default because the Neo Zeon forces exhausted themselves fighting a civil war. By the time of the second Neo Zeon movement, the Earth Federation had regained their military strength but lacked any political courage to fight it. Though the EF military saw the need to fight (mainly Londo Bell forces), the civilians side of the EF lacked the resolve to fight and sought to negotiate with the with Neo Zeon. In the end it ended up hurting the EF because Neo Zeon used this weakness to attack the Earth directly but was thwarted by Londo Bell.

The Earth Federation after the wars was put back in the hands of civilians the government decided to decrease military funds but maintain the same amount of force. This led to the development miniaturized mobile suits. Unaware that the Bunch corporation had secretly constructed a private army of there own using state of the art but extremely expensive mobile suits. These could outperform the Earth Federation mobile suits. The Earth Federation did not know of the Crossbone Vanguard's existence. The Earth Federation could not hope to produce for all branches of it's military and by the time the Earth Federation could fully figure out the Ronahs it was to late. They attacked the frontier side or Side 4. Cosmo Babylon was eventually defeated, and the Earth Federation made them pay for what the Ronahs did. They confiscated colony buildings and uncompleted colonies to a different location. As result of the loss of so many vital resources Cosmo Babylon was forced to declare bankruptcy. During this time the Assembly or part of it at least moved to space, on the moon. This is well received by the colonies. All the Earth Federation had to do was wait. It finally collapsed in a 3 way civil war and after Cosmo Babylon collapsed the Earth Federation retook Side 4 and moved all the colonies to the new location. They also secretly supported the new Crossbone Vanguard against the Jupiter Energy Fleet which had proclaimed themselves the Jupiter Empire. After the war the Federation sent a large fleet to Jupiter to retake it. They did not meet much resistance they provided much aid to the people of Jupiter and Jupiter was annexed without much resistance.

Beginning in 0100 U.C., the Earth Federation enacted a program to repair and revitalize the existing space colonies, as well as construct new ones, in keeping with a long-term plan to increase emigration to space for the purpose of slowing and eventually reversing the environmental degradation of Earth. However, this process was fraught with mismanagement and corruption. The Earth Federation government both exaggerated the degree to which Earth was being restored and frequently bent or ignored rules to allow wealthy individuals and corporations to exploit Earth as they pleased. Disgusted with this state of affairs, Hathaway Noa established the anti-Earth Federation group Mafty with a clear goal: force the Earth Federation to massively accelerate the pace of Earth's complete evacuation by assassinating all ministers of the Earth Federation cabinet and anyone who replaces them. By March of 0105 U.C., Mafty had successfully assassinated a total of 17 cabinet ministers and other high-ranking officials, the latest being Earth Environment Minister Khalil Fawcett. Several more ministers and officials were killed all at once in April in an attack on the city of Davao, where they happened to be staying due to a thwarted hijacking attempt on their shuttle. The Mafty Uprising ended when Hathaway Noa was captured by the Earth Federation and summarily executed to deter further insurrections. Although this meant the end of Mafty, the organization's actions had proven popular with many citizens, and Hathaway's execution came to be seen as a grave injustice. This inspired similar movements to form and take a stand against the Earth Federation's oppression.

All seemed well and mankind was headed towards peace. However an economic crisis hit the colonies and affected the Federation, due to trade imbalance. The Federation acted quickly enough to prevent the crisis from turning into a depression, but the economy was still highly unstable. So to help solve the crisis, they severely red-taped the EFF. This meant they were largely confined their bases. As a result, most development money went down the drain. But the Earth Federation forces were not down-sized. The Earth Federation government's primary focus was on the economic crisis, because the future of the Earth Federation was at stake. Then due to the economic crisis, some anti-Federation parties rose up, including the Gatte party, who began spreading the philosophy of Maria Pure Armonia. She was a Newtype who performed miracles for the people and was advocating independence from the Federation, as well as power to women, motherly love and a claim of the Earth for true believers. At first, they advocated in Side 1, but the local Federation commander, realizing the threat, kicked them out of Side 1. They then moved to Side 2 Amillia colony after which they really gained popularity in neighboring colonies. However, this greatly terrified the Federation, and most of Side 2's colonists.

Overview

In appearance, the Earth Federation was loosely based on the United Nations, with a Security Council and General Assembly, but is not a successor to that organization. During times of war the Earth Federation is controlled by its military, in times of peace by civilians (as seen in 0083). It was a global government that was formed by a 'rich mans' club' of wealthy nations. No individual nations were mentioned or continue to exist. Places were mentioned by what landmass or region they are in, such as New Yark City. While Japan, Australia, and Ireland are mentioned, these names refer to the landmasses and not the former countries. The only exception to this is the language and nationality of characters, which can be interpreted to be based on their predecessors' former homeland before emigrating to the space colonies.

The Earth Federation Cabinet, an executive body composed of ministers who oversaw various government departments, such as the Ministry of Earth's Environment, convened annually at different locations beginning in U.C. 0080.

The Earth Federation was divided into eleven administrative regions divided throughout the world. It is not revealed whether these regions operate with some degree of autonomy or not.

It's heraldry was a golden or white northstar, similar to that of NATO, over a horizontally lying crescent, forming an anchor-like symbol.

The Earth Federation forces were organized under the moniker Earth Federation Forces (地球連邦軍) (EFF), to enforce Federation edicts. The Earth Federation Forces were organized into two groups - an Earth-based military force, which handled all military matters on ground, sea, and in Earth atmosphere, and a space military branch, the Earth Federation Space Forces or EFSF.

The Federation maintained a number of organisations and groups that included:

• Strategic Naval Research Institute: Strategic Naval Research Institute (SNRI)
• Nemesis Instructor Corps : a special combat instructor unit.
• Earth COlony ASteroid : Earth COlony ASteroid (ECOAS) was a manhunter unit charged with hunting down the Neo Zeon remnants.
• Sleipnir Corps : a Mobile Suit aggressor squad.
• Titans :
• Londo Bell : a special forces unit that was created to replace the Titans.
• Criminal Police Organization (刑事警察機構?) : Personnel that are responsible for repatriating people who illegally stay on Earth are known as Man Hunters.

Within the Federation, there were a number of companies and other groups with ties to the government. Among them included Anaheim Electronics that was a civilian manufacturing company responsible for a wide range of products. Another was the Vist Foundation that was headed by the influential Vist family who held deep secrets about the Earth Federation.

The Federation had a number of different vehicle designs that they used which included:

During their war against Zeno, the Earth Federation secretly established Operation V (V作戦) that was a weapons development program.

In Japan, the Murasame Newtype Lab one of a handful of Newtype research institutes established by the Earth Federation Forces after the One Year War. The Murasame Lab goes on to produce the fearsome transformable mobile armors MRX-009 Psycho Gundam and MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk.II, but fielded only a single cyber-Newtype pilot.

Its territory consisted of the Earth, the Moon and all artificial satellites that orbited them along Lagrange points with these collectively being referred to as the Earth Sphere.

The Federation military headquarters was a secret, underground complex located at Jaburo, deep in the Amazon jungle. It was located underground for protection against Zeon attacks. The Federation maintained a military academy at Nijmegen.
