Biography
Origin
Gamora
She came to be raised alongside Thanos's other adoptive daughter Nebula though there was a high degree of enmity between the two. (Gamora v1 #1)
Thanos decided to train her as a weapon to use against and kill the Magus. Thanos made sure Gamora was raised with discipline, though he did on occasion show her affection as a father would show his child: such as celebrating the religious holiday of Yule. Through rigorous training she would become a highly skilled master of various martial arts forms from throughout the universe. Even though Gamora was learning and becoming a master martial artist, she still had more to learn. While still a young girl, she went on a trip with Thanos. Though explicitly against Thanos orders and warning, out of curiosity she decided to venture planet side. In turn she fell into an ambush set up by a group of thugs. The attackers used their numbers advantage and were able to defeat her in spite of her great skill. She was severely injured in the fight and gang raped. Near death, her proverbial knight in shining armor arrived in the form of Thanos, who quickly dispatched the assailants. Thanos then recovered the apologetic and near dead Gamora. After returning to Sanctuary, Thanos restored and augmented Gamora. This was achieved via bionic implants and replacement parts of Thanos' own design. These physical and power upgrades made her an equal to Adam Warlock's own physical abilities. She also received specialized training and abilities including resistance to reality distortion as well as an accelerated healing factor. (Warlock and the Infinity Watch v1 #9)
Thanos planned to send Gamora to assassinate his enemy, the Magus, the leader of the Universal Church of Truth, a warped version of Adam Warlock from an alternate future. She practiced for this assignment by killing the Church's Grand Inquisitors. (Strange Tales v1 #181) Eighteen years to the day he found her, Thanos presented Gamora a gift. The entire Badoon Royal Line had gathered on Moord to welcome the ascension of a new Monarch, allowing Gamora to slaughter them all, thus fulfilling her revenge. However, on his deathbed the previous Monarch confessed that he had an illegitimate daughter, now the only heir to the throne, and a captured member of the Council made that information know to Thanos' daughters. Gamora went to finish her mission to Ubliex, a planet days away from falling into a black hole, with hope of escape and wishing only to complete her quest of revenge before her own demise. Magus Saga
Annihilation
After being discarded and humbled by the great powers of the universe, she went out to find a place to recover and serve as a refuge for herself. This saw her arriving on the world of Godthab Omega where she carved a retreat for herself high up in the most treacherous and inhospitable of mountain ranges at Mount Virago. From there, she came to gather other female warriors who formed the Graces that served under her with Gamora herself being treated as a living goddess. She came to find a new purpose with her acolytes where they began conquering the planet slowly by subjugating each settlement under their rule. Eventually, her forces came upon a Kree settlement which was where Korath the Pursuer resided and targeted him after the resisted the Graces. This led to an encounter with Ronan the Accuser who was similarly attacked but he helped fight off the Graces with them reporting their failure to Gamora. Gamora then decided to become personally involved in this matter where she went to the settlement to confront Ronan. (Annihilation: Ronan v1 #2)
During the Annihilation War, she came to join the forces of the United Front where she began a physical relationship with Nova Richard Rider with the pair sleeping together. (Annihilation v1 #1)
With no purpose, Gamora resolved herself to fighting for the greater good and came to join the ranks of the newly formed Guardians of the Galaxy. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #1)
Cosmic Avengers
Gamora along with the other Guardians teamed up with Tony Stark to stop a Badoon invasion of London on Earth only to be captured by the Spartax Empire forces sent by J'son due to a newly created off-limit rule for Earth. (Guardians of the Galaxy v3 #2) While being held captive aboard a Spartax ship, Groot managed to rescue the Guardians along with Tony Stark from captivity and the group was able to take over the entire Spartax ship. (Guardians of the Galaxy v3 #4)
While the Guardians celebrated their freedom within a bar, Tony Stark hooked up with Gamora. After the two had sex Gamora decided to return to the bar. On her way the warrior was attacked and injured by bounty hunter Maxilin the Accuser, just as she was about to be executed the bounty hunter was shot by Rocket Raccoon. After her brush from death the Guardians hid from Spartax forces within the Seedy Side of the Andromeda Galaxy. Aboard the Guardian's ship Gamora walked into an awkward encounter with Tony in which she simply ignored him. The group detected an object moving towards Earth and proceeded to intercept it. The object turned out to be the newly arrived Angela who was transported from Heven due to the time-space continuum fracture. (Guardians of the Galaxy v3 #5) Gamora proceeded to battle the deadly angel on the dark side of the Moon. After barely defeating the overpowering angel and encountering the The Watcher, the Guardians captured Angela. Angela recollected her story of struggle into the 616 universe and was set free under Star-Lord's command. (Guardians of the Galaxy v3 #7) Gamora, along with the Guardians, helped rescue Abigail Brand during Thanos' invasion of Earth. Gamora later fought alongside Angela against the Badoon slave traders and the two became close friends. (Guardians of the Galaxy v3 #10)
After retrieving the Black Vortex from his father, Mister Knife, Star-Lord and Kitty Pryde gathered both the Guardians of the Galaxy and the X-Men at Spartax to decide what to do with such powerful item. The heroes were tracked down by Mister Knife's cosmically-empowered Slaughter Lords and overpowered. (Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: Black Vortex Alpha v1 #1) During the battle, Gamora submitted to the power of the Black Vortex and had her cosmic potential unleashed, turning the tide of the battle, and allowing the Guardians and the X-Men escape from the Slaughter Lords to Spartax's moon and decide whether to submit to the Black Vortex or not. After Beast of the X-Men submitted to the Black Vortex, attaining cosmic powers, and X-23 attempted to destroy it, Gamora used the Black Vortex to show both teams, along with Sam Alexander, what they stood to gain by submitting to its power. All-New Guardians of the Galaxy
After experiencing reoccurring dreams concerning encounters with an older version of herself, Gamora came to the realization that a portion of her soul remained trapped inside the Soul World. Determined to set it free, Gamora set out to find the Soul Gem. (All-New Guardians of the Galaxy v1 #3) To this end, she located Grandmaster and made a deal with him. To perform missions for him with the Guardians of the Galaxy in exchange for information, hoping to find about the Soul Gem this way. (All-New Guardians of the Galaxy v1 #1) When carrying a heist on the Collector's collection, Tivan agreed to help Gamora in her mission. He made a deal with Gamora, offering his assistance in stealing the Soul Gem if it turned out the Grandmaster possessed, in exchange for the Infinity Gem Gamora bluffed about possessing. (All-New Guardians of the Galaxy v1 #4)
When the Collector interrupted the Guardians' rendezvous with their client, the Grandmaster revealed he had challenged his brother just to test him. The Collector and the Grandmaster learned that some of their fellow Elders were mysteriously altered or gone and determined they could be linked to the disappearance of the Infinity Stones. Since helping the Grandmaster and the Collector gather the stones aligned with her plans, Gamora convinced her teammates to embark on a quest to find them. (All-New Guardians of the Galaxy v1 #10)
They were approached by Adam Warlock and Kang the Conqueror, who had joined forces to find the Time Stone and already had the Soul Gem in their possession. Gamora attempted to force Warlock to hand over the Soul Gem, and a fight broke out. During the battle, Drax managed to hold it, but was exposed to the corruption of Soulworld. He struck Gamora to prevent her from opening the gem and departed with Warlock and Kang. In addition to Drax's betrayal, the other Guardians refused to follow Gamora into pursuing Kang. Outraged by her teammates' behavior, Gamora left them to obtain the Soul Gem on her own. (Infinity Countdown v1 #5)
Final Gauntlet
Last Annihilation
The Guardians of the Galaxy had settled down in Halfworld when Nova approached them for their assistance in stopping the conquering rampage of the Olympians, who had been reborn as bloodthirsty rogue gods. Gamora was one of the Guardians who turned away out of concern for the safety of each other, saying they were a family now. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #1) Some of the members, including Star-Lord, snuck away to assist Nova and were successful in their mission of trapping the Dark Olympians in an alternate dimension at the apparent cost of Quill's life. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #2) As a result, Gamora broke off the team with the other Guardians who had stayed behind and formed their own team of Guardians of the Galaxy to return to their mercenary ways. Star-Lord returned from the other-dimensional world of Morinus, where he had spent a hundred of years of his life, albeit unageing, to herald the escape of the Dark Olympians from their imprisonment. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #9)
The two Guardians teams came together for the final confrontation against the Dark Olympians which saw their defeat. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #11) In the aftermath, the Guardians of the Galaxy were sanctioned by the Galactic Council as protectors of the cosmos in light of the increasing uncertainty of the galactic landscape, providing them with headquarters in the space station Proscenium. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #12) Despite being reunited with Gamora, Peter became distant toward her due to the life he had lived in Morinus, where he had joined a new relationship and even fathered a son. Grootfall
Later, Gamora's sister, Nebula, joined the Guardians in search of redemption. She combined the probability engine in her head with the Guardians' threat data to create an early-warning system that pointed to Groot's homeworld as the most likely threat vector to galactic peace. When Groot and Rocket landed on it, they found the planet razed to the ground. The last survivor, Granopy, infected Groot with one of her branches, turning Groot into an out-of-control monster. As Groot became planet-sized, getting designated Grootfall, he took out most of the Guardians and the Proscenium, and proceeded to launch pieces of himself at neighboring planets, annexing everything into his Grootspace. This was a natural process Groot's creator, the Gardener, had programmed into the Flora Colossi when he created them, and Groot was merely covering the Branchworlds under his soil until the time he could 'bloom' and rekindle the ashes, bringing the planets back to life alongside every being he'd captured. Although at first the Guardians thought Groot was lost to them, they were able to establish communication and help Groot bloom.
Gamora makes her first appearance post-Grootfall on Galilee IV, joining the remnants of the Guardians to evacuate the inhabitants ahead of Grootfall’s planet-sized rampage. She was instrumental in coordinating the planet-wide evacuation alongside Star-Lord, displaying calm leadership under apocalyptic conditions. (Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #1) Gamora played a strategic role in infiltrating a warzone to warn rival factions of Grootfall’s impending arrival. In the face of escalating panic, she maintains a steely resolve, preparing backup plans should quelling Grootfall prove impossible. (Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #2) Gamora continues to bolster the fractured team’s morale and leads defensive operations as Grootfall bears down. (Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #3) During the climactic confrontation, Gamora forged an empathic link with Groot by tapping into his memories and emotional core—bringing a moment of connection between them. In appearance, Gamora was a striking figure with emerald-green skin, indicative of her Zen-Whoberi heritage, and long black hair often highlighted with red and purple hues. (Strange Tales v1 #180) She stood at about 6 feet tall, with a lean, muscular build—further accentuated by her countless cybernetic enhancements. Trained to be the deadliest warrior in the galaxy, she typically wears tactical black or dark leather outfits and wields blades or futuristic weapons that complement her assassin background. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #3) She had noted that she had gone by many names but one of the more common ones was being the Deadliest Woman in the Galaxy. She was shown as being stoic and emotionally reserved, yet unwaveringly honourable and focused in her objectives. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #3) Whilst she can exhibit ruthless aggression and lethal precision, especially when fulfilling missions, she shows surprising mercy—such as sparing opponents whenever possible, even under extreme pressure. Gamora carried a heavy sense of remorse and guilt, driven by her quest for redemption, and though she takes few people truly into her heart, she becomes fiercely protective of those she trusted. - In Ultimate Spider-Man, Gamora appeared in the setting of the animated television series where she was voiced by actress Nika Futterman. The Guardians battle the Chitauri an alien race led by Korvac. When Rocket Raccoon's ship is pulled into the Chitauri ship, Rocket fakes surrender so that they can free the captive Guardians of the Galaxy members. Afterwards, Spider-Man discovers that the Chitauri are planning to destroy the Earth. The Guardians plan to run the Chitauri ship into the sun while fighting the Chitauri forces. When their tactic does not work, the Guardians end up making their way towards the Dark Matter Cannon. While Nova and Spider-Man head to the Dark Matter Cannon, the Guardians fight the Chitauri and Korvac. After Korvac is defeated by Groot, Nova destroys the Dark Matter Cannon and the Chitauri ship was destroyed.
- In Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers, Gamora appeared in the setting of the animated television series where she was voiced by actress Junko Kitanishi. Along with the other Guardians, Gamora broke into the ship of Ronan and stole the Kree Mact, but in their escape attempt she, Drax and Star-Lord got separated from Rocket Raccoon and Groot, who had to use an escape pod and crashed on Earth. Along with Drax and Star-Lord, Gamora followed the escape pod to Earth, but once they got there they discovered Groot and Rocket had been taken into custody by The Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D.. Thinking the Avengers to be villains, Gamoar and the other Guardians attacked the Helicarrier to rescue their teammates. In the fight that followed, Gamora first incapacitated several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents before taking on Wasp. Thanks to Groot and Akira, the misunderstanding was eventually cleared. Afterwards, Gamora teamed up with the other Guardians and Avengers to defeat Ronan and Fin Fang Foom. Gamora and the other Guardians came to the Avengers aid again in the final battles with Dormammu and Loki, having been warned by Nick Fury. They first helped to defend the Helicarrier against an attack from the Mindless Ones, thus allowing the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. to complete their new Kree Mact powered cannons and defeat Dormammu with them. When Loki stole Dormammu's powers for himself, the Guardians tried to fight him, but he easily defeated them and caused their ship, the Milano, to crash. The Guardians got their ship operational again just in time to help Blade and Spider-Man fight off Loki's army of Mindless Ones so that Akira could deliver the Kree Mact to Iron Man.
