Biography
Nebula
Thus, she was raised alongside Gamora but despite her kinship to Thanos she was not regarded as his daughter. Instead, Gamora was considered his favoured child and he claimed to have no need for another. Despite that, Nebula was by his side and sought his approval constantly. (Gamora v1 #1)
She began to consolidate her forces with the intention of conquering what was left of the Skrull empire. (Avengers v1 #257)
After her defeat, she and her minion Gunther scoured the galaxy for new sources of power. Though the ultimate goal of her search was nothing less than to rule the universe, Nebula did also express a desire to emulate the man she believed was her grandfather by destroying the universe, though this may have just been posturing. Along the way, Nebula learned the powerful and enigmatic cosmic being known as the Stranger was in possession of the Infinity Union, an item of intense and mysterious power. Unlike hundreds before her, Nebula managed to infiltrate the Stranger’s world and steal the Infinity Union undetected. (Avengers v1 #317) Though she now had the Infinity Union, Nebula still needed a source of immense power to charge it. Having studied the item in depth, she was able to locate the Stones of Halkor on Omicron Seti, a set of instructions carved by an ancient, forgotten race and which provided the formula for an incredible energy source capable of charging the Infinity Union. (Avengers West Coast v1 #48)
Locked up in a prison on Titan, Nebula showed signs of developing insanity, likely a result of Thanos’ torture and her brief period of omnipotence. She was visited in her cell by Starfox and Firelord, the latter wanting to confront the woman about destroying his homeworld, Xandar. Through a psychic link facilitated by Starfox, Firelord learned about Nebula’s tragic past, and ultimately decided to forget his quest for vengeance, leaving Nebula in her prison. (Silver Surfer Annual v1 #5)
Later on, she came to join the Graces that were a team of female warriors formed by Gamora all of whom had some degree of cosmic awareness. They joined her on the planet Godthab Omega where they quickly took over the colony. (Annihilation: Ronan v1 #2)
Nebula commanded a Chitauri ship and crew in pursuit of the Guardians of the Galaxy where she followed them to Earth. Whilst there, her forces engaged the Avengers but she managed to incapacitate her foes. (Guardians Team-Up v1 #1) This was part of a contract she had made with a client named Kindun who intended to take his revenge on Gamora for an attempted assassination on his life when she served the Mad Titan. (Guardians Team-Up v1 #2)
Believing she could undercut her competitors, she led a ruthless mercenary crew to intercept and raid a massive cargo transport vessel containing valuable goods destined for the cosmic entity known as the Collector. Following the successful hijacking, her ultimate goal was to hold the stolen inventory hostage and extort the Collector by selling his own cargo back to him at a massively inflated premium rate. Upon completing the heist and exiting the raided ship, her escape was abruptly cut short when she was intercepted and cornered by the cosmic heroes Starfox and Champion. Recognizing her immense tactical utility and criminal connections, the heroes did not arrest her, but instead forcefully conscripted her into a secret, desperate alliance alongside Thanos's estranged son, Thane, to plan a pre-emptive assassination strike against a dying Mad Titan. (Thanos v2 #2) As part of his plan, Thane deceived them into helping him invade Terrax's warship to steal a Phoenix Egg in his possession. (Thanos v2 #5) Upon discovering the truth, Nebula killed Thane to prevent him from opening the egg, but his death just made the egg hatch and allowed the Phoenix Force to turn him into its new host. (Thanos v2 #6) Thane's former allies sought Thanos' help to stop Thane, and in turn Thanos had them take him to the God Quarry, so that he could acquire the power he needed to defeat his son. (Thanos v2 #8) While working together, Nebula and Champion had a brief romantic encounter and, following Thane's defeat, both were left behind in the God Quarry. (Thanos v2 #12) Whilst in the Quarry, she was beset by an illusion by the Witches of Infinity which she finally broke and freed herself from being turned to stone. However, she was in this state for sometime and came to learn that Thanos had been slain by Gamora after she had acquired a great power. The Witches offered Nebula the means of attaining her own mighty weapon leading to her getting the horn to control the Naglfar Armada and its army of undead godlings to unleash on her enemies. (Asgardians of the Galaxy v1 #3)
When Nebula finally escaped from the God Quarry, the trio of witches that guarded it, The Coven, informed her that Thanos had met his end at the hands of Gamora, who had created a great weapon for herself. However, they also told her where she could find a weapon that would rival Gamora. (Asgardians of the Galaxy v1 #3) Nebula kidnapped the dwarf Urzuul and forced him to build an axe with teleporting abilities and help her find the Naglfar Beacon. The Asgardians of the Galaxy assembled by Kid Loki attempted to obtain the Naglfar Beacon for themselves, but they arrived too late. (Asgardians of the Galaxy v1 #1) Nebula tested the beacon, summoning the Naglfar Armada on Netredeen and then on Chandilar. (Asgardians of the Galaxy v1 #2) She moved to her true target, Earth. Expecting retaliation from Asgard, Nebula subdued and kidnapped Thor to use him as leverage. (Asgardians of the Galaxy v1 #4) She also captured Kid Loki, who had tried to warn Thor about Nebula's plans. The Asgardians of the Galaxy tracked Nebula down, and Loki incapacitated her using an illusion long enough for Valkyrie to take the Naglfar Beacon from her. During the fight, Nebula's teleporting axe was damaged, and she had Urzuul repair it. The dwarf tempered with the axe, sending Nebula somewhere unpleasant when she used the axe to escape after her defeat. (Asgardians of the Galaxy v1 #5)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Nebula was a tall, athletic alien female of the Luphomoid species who possessed a striking, exotic physical beauty and a fully organic, biological anatomy devoid of cybernetic parts. Her skin was a vibrant, deep shade of solid blue, which stood in stark contrast to her thick, luxurious mane of long, bluish-black hair that cascaded past her shoulders. Her face featured sharp, humanoid contours highlighted by stark white, pupil-less eyes that gave her a menacing and commanding expression. Her wardrobe consisted of a practical yet provocative space-faring uniform, featuring a sleek, sleeveless dark jumpsuit with a deep neckline, paired with thigh-high boots and metallic wrist gauntlets. This original design presented her as a dangerous, traditional cosmic conqueror, completely lacking the bald, heavily augmented cybernetic implants and biomechanical plating that would define her later visual identity. (Avengers v1 #257)
Whilst growing up, she despised her sister Gamora and often looked to kill her. (Gamora v1 #1)
Nebula had long sought the approval of her father Thanos though he instead favoured Gamora. (Gamora v1 #1)
Powers and abilities
Nebula possessed exceptional baseline physical traits and cosmic weaponry that established her as a highly feared mercenary commander. Her natural Luphomoid physiology granted her peak alien conditioning, resulting in superior physical strength, enhanced agility, and advanced hand-to-hand combat prowess that allowed her to effortlessly dominate ordinary humanoids. She was a master military strategist and an elite starship pilot, capable of commanding massive war vessels and coordinating complex deep-space piracy operations. (Avengers v1 #257)
She possessed a gifted intellect and was noted for being a brilliant battle strategist. (Secret Defenders v1 #9)
Her primary offensive armament consisted of highly advanced, twin energy gauntlets worn on her wrists. These specialized weapons could project devastating concussive force blasts or hyper-concentrated heat beams that were capable of completely incinerating a target on contact, making her a lethal threat in close-to-mid-range firefights. (Avengers v1 #257)
Having won out the trial beset by the God Quarry Nebula had not only regained her freedom but came out with the benefit of pseudo divinity as her prize, enabling her to breathe in a cold vacuum without need of a space suit and physically match godlike adversaries. (Asgardians of the Galaxy v1 #3)
She maintained her own intergalactic criminal organization that consisted of a band of mercenaries. (Avengers v1 #257)
Later on, she came to join the rank of the Graces that were a band of female warriors led by Gamora for a time. (Annihilation: Ronan v1 #2)
