Biography

Diane (Japanese: ディアンヌ, Hepburn: Diannu) was a female member of the Giant Clan where she was born to parents who were noted warriors of their people.

Around 700 years ago, she looked to leave the Giant Clan due to her hatred of the constant fighting of her people. During her departure, she came to form two rock-like golems tat accompanied her where she spoke to them even though tey were unable to talk back to her. In that time, she was shown to always be playing alone as she found that there were no other living beings that would accept her. At one time, however; Diane found an injured King lying unconscious on a riverbank and nursed the fairy back to health. King, who had taken a hard blow to his head, had lost all memories of his past and in his gratitude spent the next five hundred years playing with and protecting Diane. Diane later met an old man, a human, who offered Diane and King some food despite them being Fairy and a Giant. King was wary with the old man and told Diane to be careful around humans. Due to unknown reasons, Diane ended up getting a fever, in which King panicked due to Fairies never having fevers and went out to get herbs. However, Diane stopped him, telling him to not ever leave her side since she didn't want to be alone anymore. The old man who gave them food found them, and concocted a herbal medicine for Diane's fever, eventually curing her of her ailment. As soon as Diane got better, King and Diane ended up playing tag with each other, as King told her that if she caught him, he will grant her a wish.

Several hundred years later, Diane came to mature into a young woman where she was placed under the tutelage of Matrona alongside another giantess named Dolores.

The defeated Prankster Imps retreated to a sleeping Diane thus inadvertently leading Meliodas, Elizabeth and Hawk to her. Diane awoke immediately upon hearing the Imps apologies for allowing a Holy Knight to come through, since they believed Meliodas to be one, and then instantly grabs Meliodas with one hand. After realizing his identity, however, she cuddles her captain, and when Elizabeth introduces herself to be traveling with him, throws a tantrum. Meliodas, after calming Diane, begins a discussion on the day the Deadly Sins were framed for the Great Holy Knight Zaratras's murder. However, he also reveals that he has almost no memories of that day, and then narrates the only memories he has, which end with someone apologizing to him, addressing him as 'captain'. This leads Elizabeth to speculate the existence of a traitor, and Diane, to declare that she will help Meliodas no matter the foe. Few moments later, Hawk notices a gigantic thundercloud in the sky, from which a lightning bolt descends and immobilizes all of them, with Elizabeth introducing the assailant Holy Knight as Gilthunder. After he leads her away, ending her interruption, he expresses his desire to fight Meliodas, and reveals his connection to Zaratras, the Great Holy Knight. Before the battle, Meliodas and Diane easily break his immobilization themselves, and the former instructs the latter not to interfere. Diane quietly observes the battle, watching worriedly when Meliodas is gravely slashed. When Gilthunder continues attacking Meliodas and refuses to end the battle, Diane grabs him, and ignoring his attempts to escape her grip, flings him from the forest. Sometime afterward, Diane leaves along with her captain, Hawk, and Elizabeth. Meliodas decides to head for Baste Dungeon, where Ban, the Fox's Sin of Greed was imprisoned, leading Elizabeth to object, citing his grave wound at Gilthunder's hands. Though he affirmed her that it was not major, he soon collapsed.

Diane, Elizabeth and Hawk then travel to a town near the Baste, named Dalmary, in order to have the severely injured Meliodas treated by a doctor named Dana. As she sits next to Dana's house, she was watched with discriminatory wariness due to being a giant. Not long until Diane decides to head to the dungeon herself, retorting that Elizabeth would only be a hindrance when the princess asks to join. Elizabeth replies her desire to be of use, and that Meliodas was taking on 'more than he can handle'. This angered Diane, her saying that Meliodas was not doing so for the princess alone, and that such was his usual personality. She continues, narrating the episode of her and her captain's first meeting, and how he treated her at that time. As Elizabeth declares her wishes of wanting to have strength, Diane declares her own of wanting to be small. Abruptly, Hawk noticed a huge swarm of poisonous insects flying toward Dalmary. Although initially plagued by her fear of insects, Diane overcomes it and quickly killed them by raising huge pillars from the earth, much to the surprise of Friesia, the assailant. While Elizabeth and Hawk awe at Diane's ability, and she leaps out of Dalmary and, handing Elizabeth the duty of taking care of Meliodas, starts running toward the Baste Dungeon. Later on, Diane encountered Meliodas, Elizabeth and Hawk when the three are walking to the Baste Dungeon. She mysteriously seems to have no recollection of having defeated Friesia and having left for the dungeon previously. Diane tried to recollect, when she suddenly finds Meliodas and Elizabeth to have vanished, and Ruin to be standing in their place. When the Holy Knight claims to have already captured them, she attacks him, but is soon revealed to be under an illusion that deluded her into seeing Ruin in Meliodas' place; she thus attacked Meliodas while believing that she was attacking the Holy Knight.

Meliodas, immediately fled along with Elizabeth, and Hawk, and upon finding two civilians walking nearby, takes them along. As the five hide, Meliodas also falls under Ruin's hypnosis. Seeing Ruin in Diane's place, he, thinking he was attacking Ruin, jumped up, rolled and slashed from above, with Diane blocking it with her fist and responding by raising sharp pillars from the earth toward him, which he in response deflects. Diane and Meliodas' battle continues, uninterrupted, and only stops when Elizabeth manages to remove the source of Ruin's illusions - his staff's bell. Later, during the aftermath of Meliodas and Ruin's battle that ends in the latter's defeat, Diane quickly defeats Friesia with a punch that utterly crushes the Holy Knight. Walking towards the heavily injured Elizabeth, Diane removed her giant backpack, intending to place her inside and take her to the town for treatment. Elizabeth, however, requests to be taken inside Baste, to which Diane complied. The second, and older shepherd was revealed to be a soldier who was ordered to act as a civilian. When he refuses to reveal Ban's location due to fear of his superiors, Diane threatens him while holding Friesia's defeated body. Inside, the group encounters Dr. Dana's daughter Sennett and Ban. As Meliodas and Ban greeted each other, and arm wrestled, thus destroying the entirety of Baste, Diane simply watched as though this was a common occurrence. The group, along with Sennett and the other villagers, returned to Dalmary where Diane looks after Elizabeth. At night, during the party, Ban was formally introduced to Elizabeth; Diane has to stand while eating due to her size. During the party, Elizabeth expresses her joy, but states that the events in Baste have reminded her all the more about the Holy Knights' frightening abilities. Diane replied that while she was not interested in human kingdoms, she had no qualms with fighting for Elizabeth, since she was 'really cool' that day, and did have powers: the power to move her and Meliodas' hearts. Diane also asks Elizabeth whether she could henceforth address her as merely 'Elizabeth', instead of 'princess', and then told the young lady to address her as just 'Diane'.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Diane was a towering woman of the Giant Clan, standing over thirty feet tall, with long brown hair tied in twin ponytails and expressive amber eyes. She was a fair maiden possessing a well-endowed and curvaceous figure who was said to be lovely and beautiful with purple eyes alongside medium length brown hair tied into large twin tails. Diane was often dressed in an orange leotard adorned with green accents and armored gauntlets that reflected her role as a warrior. Later depictions showed her in more regal attire befitting her title as Giant Queen, while still maintaining her recognizable charm and approachable demeanor. Among the Seven Deadly Sins, she was known as the Serpent's Sin of Envy.

Diane’s personality was defined by her kindness, sensitivity, and internal conflict between her identity as a giant and her wish to be accepted by humans. Though she possessed immense power, she disliked unnecessary violence and often expressed guilt over causing destruction. Her childlike curiosity and playful teasing masked her deeper insecurities about belonging and her envy toward those close to Meliodas. As her story developed, Diane’s emotional resilience and courage came to the forefront—she embraced leadership, forgiveness, and love as guiding principles. Her compassion and loyalty made her one of the emotional pillars of the Seven Deadly Sins, a character who embodied both innocence and the wisdom of experience.

Due to her size, she cannot help Meliodas in any way other than fight for him. She has expressed her strong desire to be smaller, contrary to Elizabeth's desire to be strong. Despite Diane stating that she has no interest in humans, she still selflessly saves people who are in danger like when she risked her life to protect the elderly man in Vaizel and Zeal.

Despite her parents skill, it was said that their fighting instinct was noted passed to their daughter. By the time she was a Seven Deadly Sin, she was shown as being very confident in her abilities.

After her parents death, she was raised and trained by Matrona (マトローナ) saw Diane as a younger sister.

Initially, she had an infatuation with Meliodas as a result of their first meeting where he protected her from a group of bandits.

Powers and abilities

Diane was a Giant where she had all the traits inherent with the species such as being much larger than a human with strength proportionate to her size. In addition, she possessed a long lifespan where she was able to survive for centuries.

Diane was a member of the Giant Clan, a race naturally endowed with immense physical power and deep connection to the earth. Her primary ability was Creation, an elemental form of power that allowed her to manipulate the terrain around her, summoning earthquakes, shaping mountains, or crafting earthen constructs with a single motion. Through the sacred art known as the Dance of the Earth, Diane could channel the rhythm of nature to amplify her strength and precision, creating devastating seismic waves that could shatter enemy formations. In addition to her earth manipulation, her physical capabilities far exceeded those of any human, granting her extraordinary endurance, agility, and striking power. Over time, Diane refined her control to the point where she could sense the flow of the planet’s life force and draw upon it for both offense and defense. Her combination of raw might and spiritual harmony made her one of the most formidable warriors of her age.

Merlin was able to use her magic to shrink Diane to a more human size so that she could interact with the others. She was able to reverse the spell and restore Diane to her true size.

Melascula came to note that her strength became comparable to that of the Giant King Drole. Drole himself believed that eventually Diane would become a greater ruler of the Giant Clan than himself because her love made her stronger than mere combat power. From the Giant King, she came to learn a technique created by him that was called Drole's Dance where the special technique helped increase Diane's connection to the earth and increased her power the longer it was carried out.

As a member of the Giant race, she had the natural ability of Creation(創造クリエイション, Kurieishon). Due to their deep connection to the earth, they had the power to manipulate it to achieve a variety of effects. From a young age, she had a talent for making golems that she made to be her friends even though they could not speak to her.

Among the techniques known to her included:

  • Sand Whirl (砂の渦サンドワール Sando Wāru) :
  • Heavy Metal (重金属ヘビメタ Hebimeta) :
  • Mother Catastrophe (大地の怒号マザー・カタストロフィ Mazā Katasutorofi; literally meaning "Roar of the Earth") :
  • Ground Gladius (大地の剛剣グラウンドグラディウス Guraundo Guradiusu; literally meaning "Earth' Strong Sword") :
  • Double Hammer (双拳ダブルハンマー Daburu Hanmā; literally meaning "Double Punch") :
  • Friends (土人形フレンズ, Furenzu; literally meaning "Earth Doll") : a Creation ability that allowed Diane to create golems based on people she knew in her life. The strength of the dolls depended on her emotional connection to the person.

Her Sacred Treasure took the form of the War Hammer Gideon (戦鎚ギデオン Sentsui Gideon).

As a Holy Knight (聖せい騎き士し, Seikishi), she came to join the ranks of the band of adventurers known as the Seven Deadly Sins (七つの大罪, Nanatsu no Taizai). They were regarded as the strongest warriors in the Kingdom of Liones. (リオネス王国, Rionesu Ōkoku).
