Biography
Origin
James Buchanan Barnes
By 1935, his mother had passed away leaving the young Bucky to be cared for by his father who tasked the boy to care for his younger sister Becca. He put on a brave face and they stayed as a happy family for a few years. During this time, Bucky started to get into fights with other kids in the area leading to a number of reprimands. This led to a meeting with his father who asked Bucky to promise to never be involved in a fight again with the boy agreeing but he came to break this promise on numerous occasions. Taking his son home, his father was disappointed in Bucky who was told to stay in his room on that night. Afterwards, Bucky waited for his dad to return from duty only to be visited by uniformed officers who informed him that his father had died. After the funeral, it was decided to send the young Rebecca Barnes to boarding school whilst Bucky would be cared for by his fathers old friends on the army base. (Captain America and Bucky v1 #620)
In 1940, he operated on Army bases where he offered supplies to soldiers in exchange for favours. One allowed him to attend a civilian event where he got into a fight leading to the local police intervening where he was arrested and detained at Camp Lehigh. Despite this, his talents were noticed by his guardian Major Samson who drew the attention of General Phillips that Bucky would be perfect for a new assignment. The special mission was to take place after Bucky's recent birthday when he became 16 years old where he underwent extensive training in England under the S.A.S. Around this time, the news revealed the existence of America's first super-soldier Captain America with Bucky being amazed at his capabilities though wondered why he was never deployed on the frontline. With his training complete, Bucky was shipped on his special assignment where he was surprised to find he was being sent back home to Camp Lehigh. Once there, he was asked to put on a demonstration of his capabilities whereupon he was introduced to Corporal Steve Rogers who was really Captain America. It was then that Bucky realised that his special assignment was to serve as Captain America's partner in the field with him happily accepting the mission. (Captain America and Bucky v1 #620)
Bucky
In reality, the media had fabricated a cover story that was more 'family friendly' origin to placate the American people. (Marvels Project v1 #7)
One of Bucky's first missions with Captain America was stopping Nazi saboteurs from destroying a train. For their success, they were thanks personally by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Bucky was left behind when the Sub-Mariner later kidnapped the President forcing Captain America to go after him and rescue Roosevelt. (Captain America v1 #423) Bucky's first few adventures with Captain America would include clashing with phony fortune tellers Sando and Omar, Nazi assassin Rathcone and George Maxon who was then posing as the Red Skull. During this period they also became friends with Betty Ross of the FBI who became a regular ally. (Captain America Comics v1 #1) Bucky also joined Captain America in battling Benson and his Oriental Giants, rescued millionaire Henry Baldwin from Nazi Germany while clashing with Hitler and Hermann Göring, and had a close call with death when thwarting the Wax Man. (Captain America Comics v1 #2) Maxon returned again as the Red Skull and attempted to slay Cap and Bucky but failed in doing so costing him his life. Later, Bucky helped Captain America expose actor Craig Talbot as a Nazi sympathizer, and then needed rescuing from his mentor when he was captured by the Butterfly. (Captain America Comics v1 #3) Bucky next helped Cap expose the Unholy Legion, stopped some counterfeiters, and was imperilled by Dr. Grimm and his creations before being saved by Cap once again. (Captain America Comics v1 #4)
During this time, Bucky had also helped found the Sentinels of Liberty fan club, a youth group that endorsed patriotism and support of the United States during the war. The United States government used the group to found the Young Allies which consisted of Bucky, the Human Torch's sidekick Toro, Patrick "Knuckles" O'Toole, Geoffrey "Jeff" Vandergill, Henry "Tubby" Tinkelbaum, and Washington "Wash" Jones. Their adventures were adapted into a comic book published by Timely Comics, but the members of the Allies had their names altered, likenesses overly dramatized and not in the most flattering ways in some cases with the stories embellished. The intent was to publish propaganda to encourage youth to support the war. (Young Allies Comics 70th Anniversary Special v1 #1) Their first recorded adventure together involved being chased across the globe protecting a British spy from the true Red Skull. Trapped in China they were rescued by Captain America and the Human Torch. (Young Allies v1 #1)
When Captain America learned that George Maxon was not the real Red Skull, he and Bucky smuggled themselves into Nazi Germany to confront the real Skull and were captured. (Tales of Suspense v1 #66) With Captain America exposed to a serum that made him the Skull's slave, Bucky broke out of his cell and posed as a Nazi soldier to follow Cap on his mission to assassinate an American military official in London. (Tales of Suspense v1 #67) Bucky's pleas to Cap to helped snap him out of the Skull's control of Captain America who then -- with Bucky's help -- rounded up the Nazi soldiers. They were then dispatched to a local army base where they thwarted Wolfgang, an escaped Prisoner of War, from utilizing a new experimental 'Vanishing Ray'. (Tales of Suspense v1 #68) Bucky was later put on guard duty in the Bowery with Steve, and assisted him in stopping Nazi agent the Lord of Death and his army of homeless Zombies. (All Winners Comics v1 #1) Returning to Camp Lehigh, Bucky helped Captain America stop the original Ringmaster and his Circus of Crime, destroyed the Imperial Japanese super-sub the Dragon of Death in Hawaii, led the Sentinels of Liberty to track down a Nazi Bund which Cap later shut down. Later Bucky accompanied Cap to the French controlled Devil's Island where they saved Steve's friend Tom Jason from his torturous jailer Pepo Laroc. (Captain America Comics v1 #5) Returning to the United States, Bucky assisted Captain America in incarcerating Nazi agent known as the Creeper. (Captain America Comics v1 #21)
In November of 1941, Captain America and Bucky were dispatched along with a troop of soldiers into Africa. Part of their mission was to attack Nazi forces there and accept the surrender of Nazi defector Major Hans Guettzer to the United States military. Unknown to all, Bucky was really in command of the mission and that he had secret orders to local and assassinate high ranking Nazi official Baron Strucker. Unfortunately, their plane ran out of fuel forcing them to crash land and their forces were pinned down by Nazi soldiers. They were then rescued by a team of British S.A.S. led by American soldier Nick Fury and were also joined by the Canadian adventurer known as Logan whom, unknown to all was ordered by his employers to learn what he could about Captain America. (Wolverine: Origins v1 #17) Logan earned Bucky's ire when he took Captain America's previous offer to partner up, and soon Fury revealed to Cap the full scope of their mission in Djbera including Bucky's side mission. While Captain America led his forces to attack the Nazi camp and effect the surrender of Hans Guettzer, Bucky slipped away to complete his part of the mission, with Captain America and Logan following after him. (Wolverine: Origins v1 #18) Bucky discovered that Baron Strucker was forming his own organization a terrorist cell known as Hydra and was captured. Brought before a group of Hydra agents by a man who appeared to be Baron Strucker, Bucky seemingly slew Strucker. However, when he was saved by Fury, Logan, Cap and the S.A.S. it became clear that he only killed a man posing as Strucker. Pairing with Logan to search for Strucker, Bucky told Logan about Captain America's origins taking pleasure with the need to kill the Canadian mutant after telling him a classified secret. Logan however managed to knock the youth out. (Wolverine: Origins v1 #19) Bucky feigned unconsciousness and overheard Logan's objectives to not only keep Strucker alive, but to help him escape. Bucky revived and pretended not to have heard the entire conversation but later as they flew out of the region with Strucker as their prisoner attempted to warn Cap. This came too late as their plane was soon shot down and Strucker and Logan were recovered by Baron Zemo. Recovering from the crash, Bucky laid down cover fire, striking Logan in the chest -- ending a fight with Captain America -- and forcing the Nazis to flee. With their mission a failure, Bucky and Captain America left Logan to die in the desert, however Logan would survive and live to clash with Bucky again in the future. (Wolverine: Origins v1 #20)
In late 1945, toward the end of the war, Captain America and Bucky were in London, England, on the trail of Nazi scientist Baron Heinrich Zemo. They discovered Zemo in the process of stealing an experimental drone plane built by the Allies. In the ensuing battle with Zemo's powerful humanoid robot, both Captain America and Bucky were rendered unconscious and strapped to the drone plane to be delivered to Hitler in Berlin. Unable to stand the sight of their patriotic costumes, Zemo dressed them in U.S. Army uniforms. Managing to escape before Zemo activated the plane, the two American champions saw the drone plane begin to move just as they jumped off. Quickly, Captain America and Bucky grabbed a motorcycle and tried to catch up with it. Just before it flew out of reach, the two leaped for the plane. Bucky leaped first and managed to get a grip on the plane's wing. Captain America missed and shouted to his partner to let go in case the plane was booby-trapped. Bucky was unable to comply with his partner's commands because his uniform sleeved snagged onto the cockpit of the plane. The plane exploded, seemingly killing Bucky instantly. Captain America plunged into the English Channel to undergo the process of suspended animation, but Bucky's remains were never recovered, strengthening the belief that he was killed in action. (Avengers v1 #4)
Winter Soldier
He was believed to had jumped from the plane before it exploded but was badly injured from the small explosion. After falling within the freezing waters, it as believed that Barnes came to be preserved within it and prevented his severe wounds from bleeding out. To prevent him from dying, he was kept in cold storage and was shipped to Moscow. Once there, the scientists at the scene used approaches smuggled out from Germany to help the body regain its heat. His wounds were treated to allow his body to recover but they determined that Bucky Barnes had actually died from the explosion. However, they used resuscitation techniques to revive him though it was discovered that brain damage had caused a loss of his memories about his previous life. He only retained his reflex memories that allowed him to maintain his fighting skills. He was then placed back into stasis and put into cold storage to be used at some future point. (Captain America v5 #11)
It was in 1954 that Barnes was revived again for use in Department X's Project: Winter Soldier that used data stolen from MI-6 where they came to use schematics for the Advanced Robotic Appendages and Attachment. This saw a cybernetic arm being attached on Bucky where he was re-tasked to be a weapon for use against Russia's enemies. Due to his memory loss, it was relatively easy to re-program his mind through implantation involving sensory deprivation. Thus, he became loyal to his Russian handlers and trained further to serve as a skilled covert operative where his prior life made it easy for him to blend among U.S. and U.K. personnel. (Captain America v5 #11)
In 1956, the super-agent was dispatched to Berlin to find the rogue Natasha and Ivan Petrovich to recruit them back into the Soviet cause. He found them with Petrovich being mortally wounded with the Winter Soldier offering a chemical serum that would heal their wounds along with allowing them to live longer. Natalia accepted leading to the pairs return to service in the Soviet Union. (Black Widow: Deadly Origin v1 #1)
After Wakanda revealed itself to the world, the Winter Soldier was dispatched by the Red Room in secret with infiltrating the nation to steal its technology. He was assisted by a blackmailed Darkstar where he battled the Black Panther who defeated the Winter Soldier but during detention he was teleported away by a failsafe mechanism. (Rise of the Black Panther v1 #3)
Years ago, the Winter Soldier was assigned to the Gremlin when he had captured Major Glenn Talbot who was interrogated at a facility in Siberia. Department X dispatched Barnes to aid in the interrogation but Talbot made Bucky remember his past. This resulted in him attacking the Soviets allowing Talbot a chance to escape but Barnes was captured with his mind being wiped again in order for him to resume being a loyal operative. (World War Hulks v1 #1)
In 1960, the Winter Soldier killed MI6 director in London. (Captain America v5 #8) In November 1963, he became the second gunman who shot JFK. (Captain America v5 #50) In 1966, he was dispatched on assignment to capture two Nazi scientists named Peter Hitzig and Mila Hitzig who were the creators of the Alchemy Formula. During the assignment, he had to contend with S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Ran Shen who was tasked with recovering them for the U.S. This was further complicated by Hydra agents who were also looking to recover the scientists where in a fight with Drain Bucky came to briefly remember his own past. He then assisted Ran Shen in helping Mila Hitzig escape but she came to be accidentally killed by Nick Fury. The Winter Soldier was then captured by the Russians once again where he received additional brainwashing to make him forget his past and to prevent a repeat of this incident in the future. (Winter Soldier: The Bitter March v1 #5)
In 1982, Barnes killed them who seemed to be two Russian citizens, not accomplishing an order. An year later, in 1983, he killed Russian scientist Linus Tarasova and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Gina Autry. In the same year, he was assigned to accompany Vasily Karpov, an elderly general that had served in WWII as bodyguard. He maintained the position until the general's death five years later, in 1988. Barnes had demonstrated mental instability in some of his later missions and was placed into stasis at one of Karpov's storage facilities which had been inherited by his protégé, General Aleksander Lukin. Following the USSR's collapse, Lukin went rogue and established the Kronas Oil Corporation. (Captain America v5 #1)
Around 17 years ago, he was part of a Russian team led by Red Guardian Alexi Shostakov into Sin-Cong in order to secure their country's interests during the political strife afflicting the nation. (Marvels v2 #3)
Captain America
Afterwards, General Aleksander Lukin came to inherit much of his old mentors secrets with this including the Winter Soldier in stasis. He later deployed Barnes to recover the Cosmic Cube from the Red Skull after the villain refused to part with it. This saw the Winter Soldier using a sniper rifle to kill the Skull whereupon he took the cube from his dead hands. (Captain America v5 #1)
He came to inherit the old headquarters of Captain America which he gave as a place of refuge for the fugitive New Avengers that were hiding from the Pro-Registration forces now under the control of Norman Osborn. As Captain America, he assisted Luke Cage and Jessica Jones in recovering their stolen new born child that had been taken by a Skrull infiltrator. (New Avengers v1 #48)
Whilst on patrol, he arrived at his hideout to discover it in a mess with him attempting to bring it up with his comrades. However, they were in the midst of a discussion started by Clint Baron who believed that they should assassinate Norman Osborn to end the threat posed by him with the others disagreeing with him. Ultimately, Bucky learnt of an attack on Times Square by the supervillain Chemistro but upon arriving he along with his fellow New Avengers were left in agonising pain as the supervillains had secretly used the Power Drainer on them. (New Avengers v1 #55) The effects of the machine meant that he along with his compatriots were left powerless with Bucky experiencing intense pain from his cybernetic arm. The Dark Avengers arrived on the scene with Osborn forging an alliance with Doctor Jonas Harrow of the supervillain gang where they prepared to capture the captive heroes. However, Mockingbird arrived on a jet where she saved her compatriots due to not being affected by the Power Drainer. They escaped to a hospital to help treat Luke Cage as the power dampener caused him to experience and they took him to get treatment from the Night Nurse. Despite her being there, she was unable to help Luke due to his impenetrable skin leading to Cage deciding to willingly surrender to Osborn in the hope that he could get treatment whilst his allies used the opportunity to escape. (New Avengers v1 #57) They then fled H.A.M.M.E.R. by going into the sewers where they were pursued by the Dark Avengers but managed to escape their pursuers. The New Avengers managed to regroup at Captain America's hide-out where they had to inform Jessica Jones that her husband had been captured by Osborn's forces. (New Avengers v1 #58)
Winter Soldier Again
Bucky and Natasha then came to learn that someone had been re-activating old Soviet assets from the Zephyr project which included enhanced sleeper agents. (Winter Soldier v1 #1)
Later, James confronted Tesla Tarasova, the daughter of Linus Tarasova, victim of the Winter Soldier in 1983. Tesla had killed Father Hammer, the leader of an island where orphans grew as weapons to sale, like she had been, and seemed to want to change her past thanks to the cosmic rays that her father invented. Reached at the space base, the girl faced James, who explained how he grew better by accepting his difficult past. The base was attacked by S.H.I.E.L.D., James and Tesla survived, and the girl eventually escaped. (Winter Soldier v1 #19)
Man on the Wall
When Bucky realized he had been lied to, he attacked the LMD of Nick Fury left in the Avengers Tower and used it to find the location of the real Nick. (Original Sin v1 #4) The other selected heroes made their own way to said location, a secret satellite. There, the aged Nick Fury confronted the heroes and told them what he wanted with them. (Original Sin v1 #5) When Fury got an alert that the body of the LMD left with the Avengers had self-destructed because someone was trying to investigate it, he took one of the Watcher's eyes from Bucky and enclosed himself in a secure room, as he tried to activate the second eye he had all this time. When the Avengers arrived at the satellite, as Iron Man tracked down the signal from the LMD, Fury confronted the heroes, equipped with an armor while holding the two eyes of the Watcher, claiming that his eyes had been opened. (Original Sin v1 #6) Fury managed to repel the heroes and get back to the Watcher's Citadel. (Original Sin v1 #7) Doctor Midas was trying to acquire more power than he had when he attacked the citadel. Fury fought Midas' Mindless Ones, during which one of the Watcher's eyes was taken from him by the Orb, and was almost defeated, until the Winter Soldier and the other heroes chosen by Fury got to him, and also managed to get the confession from him that he was the one who had killed Uatu. After Fury's apparent death in the explosion which killed Doctor Midas, the Winter Soldier took his place as the Man on the Wall. (Original Sin v1 #8)
Bucky recruited Daisy Johnson for the space mission as 'the Man on the Wall'. After killing the king of Syro and stealing the sacred beast Reznor, James started to investigate about the illum, an empathogen drug that led him to Loki. Bucky reached Loki in Asgardia, even though Old Bucky had hurt him shooting an illum bullet. Loki eventually revealed that illum came from the planet Mer-Z-Bow, governed by Princess Ventolin, a new space threat according to Fury. Meanwhile, the Old Bucky secretly explained to Daisy his attempt to save James's future, as he had already done with his pastselves in the other realities. James and Daisy come to Mer-Z-Bow, where they were received pacifically by the Pao'Ree. James fell in love with Ventolin, when, suddenly, a man who wore Crossbones's mask was introduced into the royal palace and stabbed Daisy, then tried to kill the couple by destroying the place with a bomb. The villain was a Nick Fury Jr. coming from Old Bucky's reality and intended to explain what hate meant to the Winter Soldier, an ally of his father, whose absence in childhood left a mark on his life. As he could destroy Mer-Z-Bow, Loki intervened, ordering Ventolin to consign the planet, as he wanted to control illum trade. In exchange for that, he helped stop Crossbones but, sent Daisy to his Gun-Moon Planetoid 'Venter' by a trick, he gave to the villain the possibility to face the two Winter Soldiers. Daisy had already hurt Crossbones, who was escaping through a White Hole. The Old Bucky chased him and crashed in his space shuttle, grounding to his original universe, where he found Crossbones had died and could meet again his Ventolin on the reborn planet Syro. On Earth-616, a dumb Loki was put in prison by Ventolin, and the girl could finally share her love with Bucky in the Polarity Paradox Engine, the two aware of the strength of their feelings. (Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier v1 #1)
Barnes was among various people that were abducted by the race of twisted fae changelings known as the Vridai in order to take over his form. This led to other heroes believing that these people had gone rogue. After being freed, the Winter Soldier and his compatriots set about to stopping the Vridai from causing more damage to the world. (Strikeforce v1 #1)
Thunderbolts
The Winter Soldier became involved in the search of a clandestine S.H.I.E.L.D. operation involving the manipulation of Cosmic Cube fragments that was called the Kobik Initiative. Since he had attacked several S.H.I.E.L.D. outposts on his search for clues, Bucky was trailed by Steve. Bucky met up with Rogers and informed him about the project's existence and escaped before S.H.I.E.L.D. agents could capture him. (Avengers Standoff: Assault On Pleasant Hill Alpha v1 #1) Bucky later infiltrated Pleasant Hill, a super-villain prison where at its core was the sentient Cosmic Cube Kobik. Shortly before Bucky's arrival, a massive break-out had been orchestrated by Baron Zemo. Bucky stumbled upon Sam Wilson, who had taken the mantle of Captain America from Steve after he had been stripped of the Super-Soldier Serum and went looking for Rogers. By the time the two of them found him, Kobik had restored Steve to his prime. (Captain America: Sam Wilson v1 #7) The trio made their way through Pleasant Hill and joined forces with the Avengers and the Avengers Unity Division to put an end to Baron Zemo's reign of terror. (Captain America: Sam Wilson v1 #8) During the final assault, Kobik became disillusioned by how Baron Zemo had tried to use her. Bucky prepared to shoot her, deeming her too much of a threat, but she tossed him out a window and out of town. As the crisis came to an end, Kobik appeared to Bucky, distraught and begging to prove she can do good. Bucky agreed to take her in, to which Kobik replied that she also wanted to bring in some 'friends' of hers. (Avengers Standoff: Assault On Pleasant Hill Omega v1 #1)
Aftermath
He was later targeted by Hydra who dispatched a young boy named R.J. that dressed as a young Bucky and had been trained as an elite assassin to eliminate him. R.J. was stopped and nearly killed by his handler Mister Colt but was saved by Barnes who decided to help the boy and rehabilitate him. (Winter Soldier v2 #3)
Whilst at home, he was attacked by armed men with Bucky managing to kill them whereupon he investigated a string of murders in the area. During the course of his search, he came upon Sam Wilson with the two then beset upon by a young man calling himself the Natural. He claimed to had been a fan of Captain America and had been brainwashed along with enhanced by Hydra to kill the pair. Despite their skills, the two were defeated but the Natural stated that he wanted to give the two another chance with him wanting to fight the heroes again. (Falcon & Winter Soldier v1 #1)
Natasha agreed to pay Fury a visit on the Moon and the two were accompanied by Lion, who, unbeknownst to them, had brought a stowaway with him and was planning to leave Bucky and Natasha stranded on the Moon. When they finally got there, Lion tried to take all the knowledge from Fury, but was overloaded by the information and died. In the meantime, the stowaway was preparing to lift off and Natasha and Bucky were both running out of oxygen, so Natasha transferred her entire supply to Bucky so that he could stop their ship from leaving and so that she could repay him for all the times he'd protected her in the previous year. (Black Widow v6 #10)
The Revolution
Steve Rogers returned to the streets he had once called home and took up a quieter, civilian rhythm while still answering the call when trouble struck; on the eve of his birthday a coordinated, high-casualty attack exploded across Manhattan and Rogers moved immediately to rescue civilians and repel the assault, fighting alongside his long-time partner while searching the wreckage for who had ordered the strike. In the aftermath of the violence Rogers began to follow a string of enigmatic codes and breadcrumbs hidden inside the attack’s wreckage and propaganda, and Barnes worked beside him to secure survivors and sift evidence — while other, stranger signs surfaced that hinted the shield itself and the century-long shadow games behind it were not what they appeared to be. (Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty v2 #1) Rogers traced the breadcrumb trail across borders to a facility in Germany where conspiratorial designs and experimental projects revealed that an organized, century-spanning cabal had been moving pieces on a global board; meanwhile Barnes split off to follow a parallel lead in the criminal enclaves of Madripoor, seating himself at high-stakes tables and forcing answers from crime lords and fixers. Barnes used infiltration, interrogation and calculated violence to pry up the Outer Circle’s smaller arteries, disrupting money flows and gaining dossiers that confirmed the attack was part of a chess-like Century Game rather than a single act of terrorism, even as Rogers worked to decode the deeper cipher that linked the shield to deeper, older designs. (Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty v2 #2) Rogers followed the investigation into more remote theaters and forced access to a hidden laboratory built in the heart of a volcanically-fortified complex, where archival recordings and a dire message from the shield’s original architect were unearthed; he fought through Outer Circle agents who defended the site and recovered fragments of the original program that had shaped the shield’s public origin story. At the same time Barnes engaged one of the Outer Circle’s named operatives in brutal close quarters — a deadly agent known as the Dryad — and pressed her for the identity and mechanics of the Century Game, putting his body and will against a trained assassin to extract a lead that connected the Circle’s modern plays to manipulations dating back decades. (Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty v2 #3)
Rogers returned to New York carrying the weight of those recovered records and walked the city’s neighborhoods looking for how the shield’s hidden history had affected ordinary lives; he found people whose private stories intersected with the artifacts of the Circle’s past and watched as a stalking presence targeted anyone close to his enquiries. Barnes, meanwhile, demonstrated that he already knew far more about the Outer Circle’s structure and methods than Rogers had assumed, delivering intelligence and confrontation in equal measure — the two men’s parallel investigations began to converge as Barnes leveraged contacts and violent persuasion to open doors Rogers’ official channels could not. (Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty Vol. 2 #4) A recent defector from the Outer Circle led Rogers and Barnes up to the threshold of the organization’s hidden citadel, guiding them through betrayals and dead ends until the friends stood before the Circle’s inner sanctum; Rogers arrived determined to bring the conspiracy into the light, but Barnes arrived armed with answers and a plan that was not simply exposure. Inside the Shadow Capitol Barnes confronted representatives of the Circle and met the person who then held the title Revolution — an ideological, ritualized place at the Circle’s game table — and discovered that the Circle’s Century Game had been arranging lives, training pawns and reserving seats at the table for decades; the meeting cracked the veneer of Rogers’ assumptions and forced a brutal choice of methods between the two old friends. (Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty v2 #5) When the Century Game was finally turned inside out at the Circle’s heart, Barnes learned the full scale of how his history had been engineered — agents, handlers and staged tragedies had been threaded through his life to make him a living instrument of the Circle’s aims. The figure then holding the codename Revolution offered Barnes a stark proposition: kill the incumbent and assume that place at the Circle’s table, which would give him the power and access to dismantle the machine from within. Barnes accepted the bargain rather than remain a pawn; in the crowded chamber he fired through Rogers’ shoulder as Rogers lunged to stop him and then executed the old Revolution, taking the seat and the name for himself with the explicit aim of destroying the Outer Circle from inside its own game. (Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty v2 #6)
New Avengers
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Bucky Barnes was presented as a teenage boy with a youthful face, short brown hair, and a lean frame. His costume consisted of a blue tunic with red shorts, gloves, and boots, along with a domino mask that covered his eyes. This outfit marked him clearly as Captain America’s sidekick, with bright colors. (Captain America Comics v1 #1) As the Winter Soldier decades later, Bucky’s appearance drastically changed: his hair grew long and dark, his left arm was replaced with a cybernetic prosthetic bearing a red star on the shoulder, and he wore a black tactical uniform with belts, holsters, and body armor, along with a half-mask obscuring the lower part of his face. (Captain America v5 #6) After Steve Rogers seeming death, Bucky came to inherit his costume and shield where he became the new Captain America. (Captain America v5 #33) At one point, he came to succeed Nick Fury and became the new Man on the Wall tasked with defending the Earth from threats in secret. (Original Sin v1 #8) After joining the Outer Circle, he came to claim the name of the Revolution after killing the former holder of the title. (Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty v2 #6)
Bucky’s personality was marked by youthful enthusiasm, courage, and a degree of brashness. After the death of his mother, Bucky was noted to had formed a 'mask' over his true feelings by showing a brave face for the sake of his family. This hid the fact that he was angry at the whole world for the pain he had experienced with the loss of his mother. He came to vent these frustrations and anger by getting into fights with other kids in the neighbourhood. Following his fathers death, he came to keep this mask for the rest of his life. (Captain America and Bucky v1 #620)
Bucky was still coming to terms with his past as the Winter Soldier despite him projecting the image that he was happy and content when in reality he still maintained much deep-seated anger. He stated that people told him that he had been redeemed of his past with some days he thinks that true but on others he felt a lot of guilt. As a result, he endeavoured to help people as that made him feel worthwhile again. (Winter Soldier v2 #3)
He had been watching Natasha since the 1950's and in all that time he noted that she never failed to amaze him as he noted her for her graceful beauty and brutal efficiency. (Winter Soldier v1 #1)
Powers and abilities
Bucky Barnes was human, with no superhuman powers or enhancements at the time of his introduction. His abilities came from his natural athleticism, agility, and combat training, which allowed him to keep pace with Captain America’s missions. He was skilled in hand-to-hand fighting, capable of holding his own against armed foes, and adept at using his size and speed to gain an advantage. As a teenager, his physical traits were grounded in the natural limits of human physiology, making him reliant on training and teamwork to succeed. (Captain America Comics v1 #1)
In his youth, it was shown that he had a talent for hand-to-hand combat and even performed some soldiers on the shooting range. The U.S. Army had him undergo months long training and a gruelling regimen to make him a superb soldier. (Captain America and Bucky v1 #620)
He retained his reflexive memories of his fighting skills allowing him to fight still even after losing his memories of his old life. (Captain America v5 #11)
After losing his arm, Department X came to equip him a cybernetic replacement. (Captain America v5 #11)
It was shown that he could wield a sniper rifle that fired high-velocity rounds capable of breaking through bullet-resistant glass. (Captain America v5 #2)
During World War II, he was the founder of the Sentinels of Liberty that were a youth group formed by Captain America during the 1940s. It was to promote support for the United States during World War II amongst the youth of America. It promoted national pride, and vigilance against lawlessness and spies that would threaten the United States. (Young Allies Comics 70th Anniversary Special v1 #1)
