Biography

Yukishiro Enishi (Japanese: 雪代 縁, Hepburn: Yukishiro Enishi) was a Japanese male born on May 1855 where he was the younger brother of Yukishiro Tomoe who was nine years older than him. His mother was noted to had died during his birth leading to his sister Tomoe taking the role of surrogate mother for much of his life. As a result, he deeply loved and cared for his sister as he was growing up with her the only person he respected. Afterwards, his sister was engaged to Kiyosato Akira who was targeted by the infamous assassin known as the Hitokiri Battōsai. After the death of her fiancé, Tomoe left her brother to get revenge and worked with the Yaminobu to track down Himura Kenshin who was the murderer. This left Enishi alone and it was only when he was 10 years old that he discovered of his sister through the Yaminobu and appeared as her contact with her not being aware that the person was her brother. He came to believe he was helping his sister in getting her revenge but did not know that Tomoe had in fact fallen in love with Kenshin.

Enishi's life in Shanghai was an incredibly difficult one; he frequently found himself stricken with disease, starvation and physical injuries, being on the brink of death many times and barely surviving each time, as the desire to avenge Tomoe was the only thing left in his heart. However, at some point, a wealthy Japanese family took Enishi in and nursed him back to health. He claimed that once he was healthy again, he murdered the family in cold blood and robbed them of their fortune, as the sight of a family living in happiness was unbearable to him because his own had been destroyed by Kenshin. While looting, he came across a book known as Tantō Hōsen, which laid the foundation for him to learn Watōjutsu, a combination of both Japanese and Chinese sword arts studied by Ming Dynasty-era generals. According to him, Watōjutsu was key in rising to the top of the Shanghai underground. At some point, he established an organization that specialized in illicit weapons manufacturing and trafficking. It was Enishi who sold Shishio Makoto the Rengoku class battleship and he claimed to own at least ten more. He did this to both sustain himself in Shanghai and acquire the funds and forces necessary to plan and carry out the Jinchū.

Yukishiro Enishi initiated his actions by arriving in Tokyo via a ship from mainland China, where he oversaw the unloading of a large shipment of weapons intended for the black market. He demonstrated his physical capabilities by effortlessly leaping from the deck of the ship to the pier, landing with complete silence and precision. Upon being approached by a group of armed government officials and police officers, he maintained a calm and indifferent demeanor before engaging them in combat. He utilized his watō to strike down multiple opponents with such high velocity that his blade remained nearly invisible to the onlookers. He specifically targeted the weapons and equipment of his adversaries, slicing through steel barrels and wooden poles to disarm them without initially dealing lethal blows. Throughout the encounter, he remained focused on locating the residence of Himura Kenshin, eventually carving a large, symbolic mark into the ground or nearby structures to signal his arrival. He concluded his initial movements by retreating into the shadows of the city, successfully evading capture while leaving the authorities incapacitated and in a state of confusion.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Yukishiro Enishi was a male of Japanese descent who possessed sharp, refined facial features, including a narrow chin and thin, intense eyes. His hair was stark white and styled in a short, spiky fashion that stood up away from his head. He had a lean, wiry, and highly toned body type that emphasized agility and functional muscle rather than bulk. For his clothing, he wore a high-collared, sleeveless white Chinese-style shirt that featured dark trim and frog-button fasteners down the center. He wore dark, loose-fitting trousers that allowed for a wide range of motion, secured at the waist by a simple belt. On his feet, he wore traditional light footwear suitable for rapid movement. His most notable accessory was a pair of small, circular, dark-tinted glasses that rested on the bridge of his nose. He carried a long watō, which he wore slung across his back or held in his hand, characterized by a curved blade and a distinctive hilt design.

In his youth, he was indifferent to everyone except for his older sister Tomoe who he loved dearly. As an adult, he is also shown to care no less for his dead sister than he did as a child, which is seen when he laments her death and wishes to see her "smile" in his mind, hoping that his Jinchū appeases her spirit. He usually wears a façade of polite happiness while talking to the Six Comrades or others he wishes to gain the trust of, though in actuality he cares little for those around him. He acted the same toward Kenshin at first in an attempt to spite him. However, his true feelings are soon revealed, as Enishi shows himself to utterly despise Kenshin with his entire being, wanting nothing less than to make Kenshin go through the same living hell that he himself went through.

Powers and abilities

Yukishiro Enishi demonstrated exceptional physical speed and agility, allowing him to move faster than the human eye could track and navigate complex environments with ease. He exhibited advanced proficiency in the Watojutsu fighting style, which combined traditional Japanese kenjutsu with Chinese kenpo techniques, enabling him to execute powerful, high-speed strikes and defensive maneuvers. His physical strength was sufficient to clash evenly with master-level swordsmen, and he displayed remarkable reflexes by parrying and countering rapid-fire attacks. Enishi also showed high levels of endurance and pain tolerance, maintaining his combat effectiveness despite physical exertion. He utilised a watō, a specialized long-sword with a Japanese blade and a Chinese-style hilt, with extreme precision to dismantle both armed opponents and environmental structures. Additionally, he exhibited keen tactical observation, identifying the technical weaknesses in his opponent's sword techniques mid-combat and adjusting his own movements to exploit those openings.

A highly skilled swordsman more than a match for Kenshin, Enishi is the master of the Watōjutsu, a sword style that he taught himself. It is composed of the speed and slashing style of kenjutsu and the strength and flexibility of the typical Chinese sword art used in conjunction with the Watō, a Chinese-made Japanese tachi. His Watōjutsu style is entirely based on offense and power, heedless of defense; he rarely attempts to block but rather counter-attacks his opponent to utilize his superior offense. Enishi's Watōjutsu, combined with his command of speed and height, proves effective in matching and perfectly countering many of the techniques in Kenshin's Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū. Consequently, he is the only person to ever fully block a Kuzu Ryū Sen; when Kenshin attempted the technique again, Enishi prevented him from even finishing the first strike. Enishi's ultimate attack, the Kofuku Zettōsei (虎伏絶刀勢 Crouching Tiger Severing Sword Rush), was even able to counter the Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki, Kenshin's own ultimate attack.
