Biography
Origin
Dirk Garthwaite was a manual laborer employed by a demolitions company who was fired for his anti-social behavior and fits of violence. Deciding to turn his talent for mayhem and destruction to criminal activity, Garthwaite fashioned himself a simple costume to conceal his identity. He then committed a series of crimes under the name of the Wrecker, his trademark being the crowbar with which he devastated the scene of the crime. The Wrecker became more daring with each theft, and continually evaded the attempts of the police to capture him. Seeking another victim to rob, the Wrecker happened upon a hotel room occupied by Loki, the Asgardian god of mischief, whose magical powers had at that time been temporarily removed by the Asgardian monarch Odin. The Wrecker smashed his way in while Loki was in the midst of summoning his sometime ally Karnilla the Norn Queen. Loki hoped that Karnilla would grant him magical power with which he could battle his archenemy Thor, the Asgardian thunder god. The Wrecker overpowered Loki. Then, while trying on Loki's horned helmet, the Wrecker was mistaken for the god when Karnilla hastily materialized to grant Loki's request. Thus it was the Wrecker whom Karnilla endowed with magical power. This power gave the Wrecker superhuman strength, which he used to embark upon a brazen wrecking spree, no longer fearing the authorities. (Thor v1 #148) The Wrecker's rampage came to the attention of Thor, whose power had also been diminished at the time by Odin's spell. The Wrecker battled Thor for hours and finally bested the partially depowered god of thunder. But the Wrecker was finally defeated by the Destroyer, a virtually invincible Asgardian automaton that was at this time animated by the spirit of the Asgardian goddess Sif. (Thor v1 #150)
The Wrecker was imprisoned under heavy sedation to prevent him from using his superhuman strength in an upstate New York hospital for several months, but developed an immunity to the tranquilizers and broke free. The Wrecker once again battled Thor, who now again possessed his full godly power, and overcame him. Thrown upon the electrified third rail of a New York City subway track, the Wrecker had his superhuman strength drained from him by a discharge of energy from Thor's enchanted hammer. (Thor v1 #171)
Wrecking Crew
The Wrecker along with Thunderball came to be enhanced by an mysterious benefactor that had upgraded their weapons to be much more deadly. This included Dirk's wrecking bar being able to wreck reality itself where his actions brought him into conflict with Doctor Strange. Garthwaite nearly killed Doctor Strange who barely managed to escape and their second confrontation saw Thunderball enter into the fray. Despite their combined attack, the Wrecker was defeated by Strange who questioned the two about their employer. (Dr. Strange v1 #2)

In appearance, the Wrecker was a male human mutate whose form was that of a tall, heavily muscled, and imposing bipedal earthling warrior who underwent an extensive mystical biological enhancement. He possessed a thick, barrel-chested physical build wrapped in fair skin, displaying an exceptionally dense muscular structure across his broad shoulders and elongated limbs. His face sat squarely on a thick neck, featuring a heavy cranial brow, wide-set dark eyes, a prominent nose bridge, and a rugged jawline framed by a full head of short, unkempt brown hair. He openly wore a highly distinctive, custom-designed criminal uniform consisting of a dark, form-fitting green tunic with long sleeves, matching tight green trousers, and a contrasting light purple fabric mask that completely covered his entire face and nose, leaving only his eyes exposed. He adorned his midsection with a wide, heavy leather utility belt containing reinforced metallic pouches, and wore sturdy, knee-high dark leather combat boots. His entire upper torso was wrapped in a thick, cross-strapped purple leather harness, keeping his hands entirely free to smoothly swing and manipulate his signature weapon, a large, weathered steel construction crowbar that glowed with a faint mystical aura. The Wrecker belonged to the human race and existed in a mystically augmented state due to an accidental Asgardian enchantment, which naturally granted him the biological traits of immense superhuman strength, boundless physical stamina, and a highly dense cellular framework. His mystically altered physiology provided his body with extreme structural durability, allowing him to shrug off high-impact kinetic trauma, deflect high-velocity conventional ballistic gunfire directly off his skin with zero tissue damage, and effortlessly lift approximately forty tons in combat. He did not possess innate magic, passive organic flight, or natural element manipulation in his basic biological state, relying entirely on his massive brawling mass, raw muscle power, and his connection to his enchanted crowbar to dominate his opponents. His steel crowbar became virtually indestructible after absorbing Karnilla's magic, granting him the specialized technological and mystical capability to easily shatter reinforced bank vaults, absorb or redirect energy blasts, and generate localized shockwaves by slamming the tool into the ground. His primary capabilities allowed him to match the physical output of seasoned Asgardian warriors, withstand extreme environmental pressures, and successfully coordinate large-scale property destruction operations across metropolitan sectors. The wrecking bar came to be enhanced where it was able to wreck reality itself with its strikes. A result of blows on an enemy could see every version of his target from across the Multiverse being hurt by one of his blows. (Dr. Strange v1 #2)
