Biography
Winry Rockbell (Japanese: ウィンリィ・ロックベル, Hepburn: Winryi Rokkuberu) was a female human born in Amestris as the daughter of Dr. Yuriy Rockbell (ユーリー・ロックベル, Yūrī Rokkuberu) and his wife Dr. Sarah Rockbell (サラ・ロックベル, Sara Rokkuberu).
She lived in the rural town of Resembool, where she worked as an apprentice automail mechanic under the strict guidance of her grandmother, Pinako Rockbell. Raised as an orphan following the tragic deaths of her surgeon parents during the Ishvalan Civil War, she dedicated her childhood to mastering the intricate mechanics of cybernetic prosthetics. Her peaceful routine was fundamentally disrupted when her childhood friends, Edward and Alphonse Elric, returned to the village after a catastrophic, failed human transmutation experiment that cost Alphonse his entire physical body and Edward his left leg and right arm. Winry Rockbell monitored the medical emergency alongside Pinako, immediately coordinating a grueling, three-day surgical procedures to attach custom-built, military-grade automail nerve-link prosthetics to Edward's torso. Following the successful stabilization of his nervous system, she watched Edward commit to a career as a State Alchemist to locate the Philosopher's Stone. Recognizing his ongoing need for technical maintenance, Winry Rockbell formally established her role as his exclusive personal automail engineer, bidding him farewell as he departed the village while she remained behind to continue her advanced mechanical studies.

In appearance, Winry Rockbell was a human Amestrian female teenager with a slender, highly athletic build and fair skin. She possessed long, vibrant blonde hair styled straight that fell past her shoulder blades, which she frequently wore loosely tied back or covered with a signature, triangular green bandanna tied at the back, paired with large, prominent blue eyes and highly expressive facial features. Her standard active civilian workshop attire reflected utilitarian, industrial mechanics fashion designed for maximum physical flexibility and manual labor. This wardrobe featured a form-fitting, strapless black tube top or bandeau layered underneath a loose, light-colored zip-up mechanic's jumpsuit that she typically wore tied down around her waist to expose her upper torso. Around her hips, she secured a thick dark leather tool belt featuring specialized pouches to house an array of wrenches, screwdrivers, and calibration instruments. Her footwear consisted of practical, thick-soled dark leather work boots suitable for navigating grease-covered workshop floors, maintaining a highly polished, authentic, and hardworking civilian presentation.
As a mechanic, she had a deep love and appreciation for everything to her work which included automails. When working, she was shown to always give all her heart and effort on a project.
She had a strong sense of morality and long respect for her parents.
Since childhood, she had been friends with Edward Elric (エドワード・エルリック Edowādo Erurikku?) and his brother Alphonse Elric (アルフォンス・エルリック Arufonsu Erurikku?). During those years, she often used to get into arguments with Edward. Over the years though, she came to admit to herself that she had been falling for him all along.
Powers and abilities
Winry Rockbell was born an ordinary human being with no special powers though she was a gifted mechanic. She excelled in the repair of machines of widely varying complexity. However, her true passion and expertise was in the crafting and overhaul of Automail (機械鎧オートメイル, Ōtomeiru, Japanese kanji lit. Mechanical Armor) which were automotive armored prosthetics.

- In Fullmetal Alchemist, Winry Rockbell appeared in the 2003 anime television series adaptation where she was voiced by Japanese actress Megumi Toyoguchi and by English actress Caitlin Glass in the dubbed version. A close childhood friend of Edward and Alphonse Elric since their young life in Resembool, she is almost like a sister to the two and essentially their only family. An amateur surgeon and mechanical repair specialist/enthusiast, Winry is Edward's rear line support as his personal automail engineer and mechanic, making sure his prosthetic right arm and left leg are always in good working order. Winry pays a lot of attention to Ed's automail because of her deep feelings for him, and feels accomplished when she thinks that Ed wins in an automail arm wrestling contest. Winry accepts the Elric brothers as a part of her family and tries to play the role as their sister, though she may not truly see herself as one. Throughout the series, she tends to most express her feelings during moments of weakness, showing genuine concern and romantic interest towards Edward. When they were younger, Ed and Al would argue over who would be the one to marry Winry when they grew up. When Ed passes his State Alchemy Exam, he writes to Winry and in response, Winry decides to go to Central to congratulate Ed. Unaware of the ill-timed nature of her visit, she goes to State Military HQ to meet Ed. However, she is abducted by the serial killer Barry the Chopper after he poses as a delivery girl and she takes an interest in his refrigerated van. When Ed finds Winry gone and traces of oil and loose bolts matching those used in his automail arm on the ground outside HQ, he attempts to pick up her trail and is eventually abducted himself. Both Winry and Ed are almost killed by Barry until Alphonse and the State Military come to rescue them and arrest Barry. After this, Winry observes Ed confessing to Al how he felt when Barry attacked him and is driven to tears upon hearing him confess that he couldn't save a little girl.
