Biography
Whilst Walter was in St. Claire's, William arrived at the facility in order to remove parts of Bishop's brain that were hidden in three other people. (Episode: Grey Matters)
When Fringe Division investigated the Pattern, they attempted to find Bell but his position was unknown with even Nina Sharp unaware of his location. In reality, he was residing in an alternate universe for the last several months with him living at an office at the top of the World Trade Center that remained standing in that reality. He managed to transport Olivia Dunham to that office when she crossed the barrier between the two worlds. (Episode: There's More Than One of Everything) After returning to her universe, Olivia Dunham has trouble remembering what Bell told her. After a few weeks, she remembered that he warned her of the storm in which the two universe would collide if she did not stop Thomas Jerome Newton from being resurrected. (Episode: Momentum Deferred) He teams up with Olivia Dunham and Walter Bishop in the Alternate Universe. He told Walter how his crossing over in the 1980s began to destroy this world. He later revealed that Walter himself asked him to remove his memories. Bell cannot cross over again, as his atoms would split apart and no trace of him would remain in either universe. Due to this, he sacrificed himself so the others can return home. (Episode: Over There: Part 2) When Olivia visited Bell on the other side, he served her a glass of tea that contained soul magnets. (Episode: Stowaway) In his will, he gave Nina Sharp a bell that was described as a 'memento of himself'. Walter realized that the bell was more than its appearance in and rang it, expecting Nina to become embodied by Bell. However, it was Olivia who had a reaction to the bell's frequency. (Episode: Os) Broyles gives William 48 hours to find a new viable host for him and get out of Olivia's body, but William takes his time as he knows that no harm is coming to Olivia. However, not too long after, Olivia regains control of her body briefly, confused and in a trance before William takes back over. William then explains that there was something more complicated than he expected. (Episode: Stowaway)
After a long search and wait, Olivia Dunham meets him. She is pulled into the parallel universe and greeted warmly, but with ominous subtext. Olivia discovers that she is near the 100th floor of the World Trade Center. The conversation between Olivia and William continues and he briefs Olivia on the state of affairs between universes, and warns of the infiltration of the First Wave into her universe. She is then sent back to this universe and promptly ejected through the front windshield of the car she was driving and soars thirty feet across the pavement in front of her wrecked vehicle. A shape-shifting soldier is then tasked to retrieve details of Olivia's meeting with William Bell. During a memory recall revelation Walter realizes that Bell uses a fake name - Doctor Simon Paris - during the period of duress that they felt it was essential to remove critical portions of Walter's brain in the grand scheme of their career long hubris. at the time, Bell appeared to be the chief culprit behind Walter's institutionalization. Later, Bell reminds Walter that it was Walter's decision to have him remove parts of his brain. Nina Sharp is able to send messages to William Bell, but Bell never replies back to Nina's messages. He explains in that the Fringe Division of the alternate universe has a way to monitor all communication networks and possibly this is the reason why he never answer Nina's messages. In a fictional tale by Walter, Bell communicates with Nina Sharp via a campy, film noire, viewing device.
In attempt to save Peter, Olivia was to meet Bell at Grayshot Bridge, in Central Park, in the alternate universe. He failed to show up on time and later met with Olivia outside of Bolivia's house. Bell joined Olivia and recovered Walter from the hospital. He admitted that he helped Secretary Bishop in creating the shape-shifters and the Pulse weapons used by the Fringe Division. He tells Walter that he did not establish a Massive Dynamic in the alternate universe and that his counterpart died in a car accident when he was young. Despite being influential and having a tie to Secretary Bishop he is not recognized by Bolivia and Lincoln Lee. Later, he sacrifices himself to keep the door open long enough for Peter, Bolivia, and Walter to cross to the other side.
Walter and Peter journey into Olivia's consciousness and find William in order to recover Olivia before she was 'lost'. After Walter and Peter 'die' within her mind, William aids Olivia in escaping until she is able to confront her own fears, enabling her to take back control of her body. William tells Olivia to pass on the message "I knew the dog wouldn't hunt" to Walter. He then departs from Olivia's consciousness. As Olivia wakes up, Astrid and Walter realize that William's plan to transfer his own consciousness into a computer has failed. Olivia relays William's message to Walter, who explained that the message was a phrase William would use in earlier experiments when he knew that they would not be successful, and that his reason for suggesting it was because "William hates goodbyes". (Episode: Lysergic Acid Diethylamide)
