History

White Zetsu (Japanese: 白ゼツ, Hepburn: Shiro Zetsu) were a plant race that were created by Kaguya Otsutsuki on the Ninja World. They were originally humans who had fallen victim to Kaguya's Infinite Tsukuyomi where they were bound by the roots of the God Tree. Over the course of years, these victims were transformed into a mutated form where all aspects of their former personalities were stripped from them. Their creation was to help stave off a future attack from members of Kaguya's own Ōtsutsuki Clan who were to come to the planet to steal its chakra for themselves. Despite her plans, her intended goal for the White Zetsu army never came to pass as she was reduced into the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and was sealed within the moon by her sons with the Zetsu similarly trapped in the Gedoh Statue. The creation of White Zetsu dated back to the aftermath of the Infinite Tsukuyomi unleashed by Kaguya Ōtsutsuki in the distant past. Trapped in the roots of the God Tree, countless humans were bound into its structure and transformed into the first White Zetsu. They were not natural-born beings but artificially created soldiers, their bodies altered into a plant-like state of half-human, half-vegetal matter. Each White Zetsu was an echo of the people trapped by Kaguya’s illusion, stripped of individuality and turned into obedient extensions of her will. Their true origin was hidden for centuries until Madara Uchiha uncovered their existence beneath the earth and began using them as part of his long game against the shinobi world.

Centuries later, Madara would awaken the Rinnegan and decide to summon the husk of Kaguya's body as the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and use its chakra as a way to create Hashirama's artificial body both to keep himself alive beyond his lifespan and create sentient human-plant hybrid clone of Hashirama called White Zetsus. Unknown to Madara, the White Zetsus he believed to be created were actually not the product of his meddling with Hashirama's DNA with Demonic Statue's powers for latter purpose, but rather Kaguya's past victims moved from inside the statue itself by Black Zetsu. The White Zetsu first revealed themselves when they served as Madara’s underground spies, emerging from the earth with their bizarre, plant-like bodies to gather intelligence on the movements of shinobi. With the ability to merge with the ground and travel vast distances unseen, they became indispensable scouts for the Akatsuki. Their appearance in battle was uncanny—they could rise from the soil without warning, ensnaring enemies with their vine-like appendages. During these early encounters, they showed no interest in direct combat but instead supported their allies by monitoring enemy positions and interfering at key moments. Their deceptive, low-key activity established them as one of Madara’s most useful hidden tools. In Madara's final days, he would have White Zetsu and Tobi assist Obito Uchiha during his recovery. When Obito despaired after Rin's death and decides to work for the eye of the moon plan, Madara entrusted Obito with Black Zetsu and the plan to move forward.

Black Zetsu came to use a White Zetsu as a host body when he joined the ranks of the Akatsuki. The union created the unique, dual-colored entity that officially joined the Akatsuki as its primary spy and scout. Throughout his tenure with the organization, White Zetsu functioned as a 'chatterbox' counterpart to Black Zetsu's more cynical persona, frequently engaging in bizarre internal dialogues while surveilling key figures. He spent years lurking in the shadows of the world’s most critical conflicts, notably witnessing the first major clash between Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha at the Valley of the End. Within the Akatsuki, he operated with a level of independence that surpassed even the organization's leaders, as members often reported their mission outcomes directly to him rather than to Pain. Beyond reconnaissance, he served the gruesome role of a 'corpse disposer', using his plant-like physiology to devour the remains of fallen members and failed agents to ensure no village could uncover the group's secrets. He was also tasked with retrieving the rings of deceased members, such as Sasori, to maintain the organization's symbolic continuity. During large-scale operations, like the extraction of Tailed Beasts, Zetsu utilized his ability to split his body in two, allowing one half to act as a sentinel while the other participated in the lengthy sealing rituals. His multifaceted role extended to providing medical support and intelligence to Obito, often moving between various cells to monitor the progress of the Tailed Beast hunts.

Underneath the Mountains' Graveyard, one hundred thousand Zetsu were cultivated as part of an enemy that were to take part in the upcoming Fourth Shinob World War. Kabuto Yakushi after joining the Akatsuki was shown the White Zetsu army where he was amazed at the sheer number of them. Despite that, he felt that he could improve upon them through his scientific knowledge but to accomplish that he required the leaf shinobi Yamato. He was ultimately able to succeed in capturing the wood style user and used his cells to help improve the White Zetsu as the war was declared against the Allied Shinobi Forces.

Once Tobi finished his preparations for the Fourth Shinobi World War, he had the Zetsu army mobilise to fight the Allied Shinobi Forces' 80,000-person strong army. Because of the size of their forces, Tobi had the Zetsu travel below ground, to be led from above by himself to hide their numbers. This was discovered by Muta Aburame and is reported to the various commanders. The Second Division, led by Kitsuchi, as well as elements from the Fifth Division, unearth and attack a detachment of 20,000 White Zetsu Army soldiers travelling directly underneath them. While fighting the Allied Shinobi forces, they began to overwhelm them, allowing several thousand White Zetsu to pass through underground. Upon reaching the front lines, the clones engaged the Allied Shinobi Forces in large-scale melee combat, utilizing their elongated, pale limbs to deliver physical strikes and grappling maneuvers. Some units extended their cellular mass to form rudimentary spikes or blunt protrusions from their torsos to impale or bludgeon opposing combatants. They maintained a collective offensive, leveraging their superior numbers to swarm individual targets and overwhelm defensive perimeters. Throughout these initial encounters, the White Zetsu units displayed a lack of self-preservation, continuing their forward advancement despite sustaining heavy casualties from elemental attacks and physical weaponry. The army successfully divided its forces into multiple divisions to simultaneously engage different elemental branches of the Allied military, forcing the opposition into a broad, multi-front defensive posture. During the infiltration phase, the White Zetsu units transitioned from direct physical confrontation to a strategy of cellular mimicry using the Substitute Technique. By absorbing the chakra of opposing combatants during prior physical contact, individual clones altered their molecular structure to perfectly replicate the physical appearance, clothing, weaponry, and unique energy signatures of specific Allied shinobi. These replicas bypassed security perimeters and medical encampments undetected, utilizing their assumed identities to initiate internal sabotage and nocturnal assassinations of high-ranking officers and medical personnel. The clones executed these strikes with precision, often waiting until their targets were in a state of rest or distraction before deploying concealed blades or blunt force. This widespread internal penetration forced the Allied forces into a state of total structural paralysis, as the inability to distinguish between genuine allies and Zetsu imposters led to the implementation of restrictive containment zones and the cessation of standard military communication. The units maintained these disguises even under intense interrogation, only reverting to their original pale, vegetative forms upon sustaining fatal physical trauma or total chakra exhaustion.

During the secondary stage of the offensive, a specific subset of the White Zetsu army underwent a structural enhancement through the integration of stolen DNA and the concentrated energy of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. These modified units developed a more durable cellular density and increased physical proportions, enabling them to withstand high-impact elemental strikes that previously incapacitated standard clones. In the shoreline regions and the Land of Frost, these enhanced entities coordinated their movements to form massive, multi-limbed constructs, merging their individual bodies into a single, colossal mass to crush defensive fortifications. Furthermore, certain units utilized a parasitic fusion technique to latch onto the bodies of opposing shinobi, draining their chakra reserves through direct skin contact while simultaneously suppressing the host's motor functions. This process allowed the Zetsu clones to effectively use the hosts as biological shields against incoming projectile fire. As the conflict reached its peak, the clones transitioned from independent combat units into a collective defensive barrier, positioning themselves in dense clusters around the central command area to repel advancing divisions through sheer physical volume and continuous, high-speed regeneration of lost limbs.

Though believed to had been annihilated, the Otsutsuki clan ruins beneath the Mountains' Graveyard contained a tree that birthed a handful of White Zetsu that lacked sufficient nutrients. Around 15 years later, Sasuke Uchiha who was investigating the Otsutsuki clan came upon the site and killed most of the White Zetsu though one of their number managed to survive. Team 7 were investigating the graveyard after mysterious activities reported in the area with Konohamaru leading the team into the ruins. Once there, they encountered a lone mutated White Zetsu with them being successful in eliminating the monster.

Overview

In appearance, the White Zetsu were albino mutated humans with odd features and a similar form share by their number. Originally, they were humans who fell victim to Kaguya's Infinite Tsukuyomi and were bound by the roots of the God Tree. Over the course of years, these victims were morphed into their current forms, having their original personalities and individuality drained away. Their heads were bulbous with sharp mouths, while their eyes were simple black dots set into their white faces. Each one looked identical, lacking individuality, their forms molded from the God Tree’s biomass. In their resting state, they could fuse into the earth or emerge halfway, their lower bodies melding seamlessly into the soil as though they were part of it.

Despite seeming human, they no longer needed to carry out any normal human bodily functions as they did not require sleep nor to breath. Though they share many vital points as a normal human, they are incapable of bleeding in their natural forms. Due to their plant nature, members of the White Zetsu Army can merge into a more plant-like monster for better resistance against Yang-natured chakra.

The original batch of White Zetsu created by Kaguya, who each had a distinct appearance, demonstrated a degree of individuality and intelligence. The process of becoming a White Zetsu was tied to the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Kaguya’s technique that ensnared all of humanity in her illusion. Victims caught in its light were dragged into the roots of the God Tree, their bodies absorbed and reshaped into White Zetsu soldiers. This horrific transformation erased their identities, converting them into extensions of Kaguya’s army. Unlike Edo Tensei, which summoned the dead, or puppetry, which controlled corpses, this was a living mutation, warping humans into pale mockeries of themselves. Even after the war, the truth of their origin revealed that every White Zetsu was once a human being, sacrificed to the will of the Ōtsutsuki.

The abilities of the White Zetsu were both subtle and insidious. They could travel underground at great speed, using their plant-like physiology to merge with trees, rocks, and soil, making them impossible to detect by conventional means. Their bodies were durable, able to regenerate damage and survive conditions that would kill ordinary humans. Through chakra mimicry, they could copy an individual’s chakra signature perfectly, allowing them to assume the identities of their targets and move among enemy ranks undetected. In battle, they extended their limbs like roots and tendrils, binding and draining enemies. In great numbers, they became overwhelming, a collective army grown for infiltration, sabotage, and attrition rather than outright duels.

They had the ability to absorb chakra by simply establishing physical contact with their quarry. This process was primarily executed through the release of microscopic spores that remained dormant upon a target’s body until the moment of activation. Once triggered, these spores rapidly gestated into bulbous, fungal-like growths that physically constricted the victim while systematically siphoning their internal reserves. This absorption was so thorough that it allowed the White Zetsu to perfectly replicate the unique chakra signature of the host, facilitating a level of mimicry that was indistinguishable even to the most advanced sensory techniques. Beyond this parasitic growth, individual units of the species could drain energy through direct physical contact, acting as living batteries that could either store the stolen power or instantly transfer it to another being to provide rejuvenation and healing. This ability to absorb and manipulate life force was a direct byproduct of their origin within the God Tree, rendering the entire species a self-sustaining network of energy thieves that converted the strength of their enemies into the very fuel used to sustain their own existence.

White Zetsu have the ability to use Wood style jutsu which allows it manipulate vegetation and plant around it. White Zetsu can travel through the ground and earth to cover long distances in a short amount of time. White Zetsu is able to create spores and clones of himself to attach onto people. Some of spores can provide chakra to an individual like Sasuke in his battle and against the five kage or it can remove chakra from others who come into contact with it. White Zetsu's spore technique also allows it to keep track of people like Sasuke during the Fourth Great Ninja War. The members of the White Zetsu Army all have wood style jutsu like the White Zetsu who was apart of the Akatsuki. These members of the White Zetsu army have tough durability because of Yamato's wood style influence. Members of the White Zetsu Army also have the ability to turn into a replica of the person when they take the chakra from them essentially becoming like them so that they can carry out covert attacks against others during the Fourth Great Ninja War.
