Biography
Varric Tethras
The Tethras family was once part of the Noble caste in Orzammar, until Varric's father was caught fixing Provings. Such was the disgrace and danger to the family that the household had no choice but to leave for the surface. Varric's mother, Lady Ilsa found the shame of the family's exile too much to bear and turned to liquor and smoke for comfort. With his older brother Bartrand busy building the family's wealth, it was Varric who took responsibility for his mother. He took pains to keep Ilsa's addiction hidden so as to avoid the public scandal this would bring and cared for her during bouts of illness. Varric thus displayed both the shrewdness and compassion that would mark him in life. Unlike his older brother, Varric was born in Kirkwall and has no feeling of loyalty or love towards Orzammar, his knowledge of which is largely second-hand. He is a merchant prince among the surface dwarves

Personality and attributes
In appearance, Varric Tethras was a short, exceptionally stocky Dwarven male who possessed a robust, heavily compacted physical framework that stood significantly shorter than his human companions, yet displayed great upper-body muscular density. He had fair skin, a strong jawline, and a well-groomed head of short, neatly styled blonde or light brown hair that slicked back from his forehead, paired with highly alert, expressive hazel eyes. His face frequently maintained a highly relaxed, charismatic, and confident smirk that reflected his smooth-talking personality. His attire was highly distinctive and unconventional for a dwarf, consisting of a stylish, deep red or burgundy tailored long coat worn completely open at the chest to proudly expose a patch of dense, blonde chest hair, entirely lacking standard protective iron plates. He wore a simple leather vest beneath his coat, form-fitting dark uniform trousers held together by wide leather straps, and heavy leather boots designed for urban navigation. The primary instrument of his defense was an exceptionally massive, highly customized, two-handed mechanical repeating crossbow nicknamed Bianca, which featured an intricate system of gears, levers, and a polished dark wood stock that he carried securely gripped in his hands at all times.
Varric was a rogue from House Tethras. He was the youngest son of the Tethras family while his older brother was the head and runs the family business. On the outside, he is seen as the idle younger brother who spends his time in taverns telling wild stories while people buy him drinks. His real job was to maintain a "spy network" with contacts to deal with various troubles that come along with being in a family that is part of the Dwarven Merchants Guild.
It is revealed that Varric's sweetheart, Bianca Davri redesigned Bianca and actually made it work. The couple also had plans to profit from the design, however their plans never materialized as the two drifted apart.
Powers and abilities
Varric Tethras was born a member of the Dwarf race where he belonged to the exiled noble caste of House Tethras, which naturally granted his biological constitution an absolute immunity to the corruptive magical energies of raw lyrium and a baseline level of dense skeletal resilience. He operated as a highly specialized surface rogue and master marksman who possessed advanced technical reflexes, allowing him to rapidly reload and fire his custom repeating crossbow with elite precision to pierce through reinforced darkspawn armor from massive distances. He possessed an elite level of tactical awareness and trickery, enabling him to seamlessly deploy mechanical traps, construct elemental mines, and analyze structural weak points in hostile formations mid-combat. His unique capabilities included a world-class level of silver-tongued charisma, espionage coordination, and information brokering derived from his role as a spymaster for the Dwarven Merchants' Guild, allowing him to effortlessly manipulate social dynamics and diffuse high-stakes conflicts entirely through verbal negotiation. Additionally, his baseline capabilities included advanced hand-to-hand brawling coordination, high-tier storytelling intellect, and a profound memory for detail, allowing him to act as the primary structural biographer and chronicler for high-tier historical events under extreme stress.
Varric had a signature crossbow named Bianca. Bianca has a carved wood stock and brass embellishments, as well as a retractable bayonet that slides out of a slot in the front. As such, Varric was the only companion who cannot equip different weapons. When asked about the story behind how Bianca got her name, he replies that it involves a girl and a promise, and that it is the one story that he can never tell. He has put the story to song, but will not sing it, instead humming the tune during battle.
