History
Titan Station
Its creation came after humanity faced the potential for extinction due to resource depletion on Earth, leading to the development of planet-cracking technology. In the early 25th century, the moon Titan in the Saturn system was selected for the first successful 'moon harvest', an early form of planet-cracking that satisfied humanity's immediate resource needs. The moon was harvested, but the process was halted for reasons unknown, leaving a significant fragment behind. Titan Station was then constructed into and around this remaining "shard" of the moon, growing into a massive civilian metropolis with a population exceeding one million people. It housed schools, malls, residential skyscrapers, and a large Church of Unitology, with a dedicated security force. The station was strategically important, functioning as a critical research outpost and a way station for deep space mining operations.
After the initial economic boom of resource extraction faded, the station faced financial difficulties but remained a key research and transit hub. The Earth Government (EarthGov) then secretly established a research project within a secure, sealed-off Government Sector to create a new Red Marker, using data from Isaac Clarke and Nolan Stross, who were both secretly held in the station's medical center. The construction of this Marker was a closely guarded secret, funded through clandestine grants. The station's population was completely unaware of the project, the presence of the Marker, or the initial Necromorph containment efforts in the moon's mines. The period leading up to the outbreak was one of apparent calm on the surface, while the psychogenic influence of the nascent Marker began subtly affecting the population's mental health, causing growing paranoia and a rise in strange behavior before the sabotage that began the infestation.
Overview
In appearance, Titan Station, known as the Sprawl, was a massive, sprawling civilian metropolis constructed into and around the last remaining fragment, or "shard," of Saturn's moon Titan. The entire structure was immense, estimated to be around 11 miles long from one end of the public sector to the other, dwarfing even a massive planet-cracking ship like the USG Ishimura. The station was divided into two main areas: the Public Sector and the Government Sector. The Public Sector formed a large semicircle around the Titan Shard, an "upright" city with numerous towering skyscrapers, residential complexes like Titan Heights and Cassini Towers, and commercial areas such as the Concourse shopping mall and a large Church of Unitology. A mirrored section, known as the "inverted city," existed below the primary city, connected by gravity-adjusting elevators. The Government Sector was situated on the Titan Shard itself, a more secure, sealed-off area that housed EarthGov offices and secret research labs. The exterior of the station was a functional, dense urban landscape, covered in buildings and infrastructure, designed to be a self-sustaining city in deep space, a complex, man-made environment visible against the dark backdrop of the Saturn system.
