Biography

The Tinkerer and Toy in Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #53.

Phineas Mason

At some point, he had a son who was named Rick Mason. (Marvel Graphic Novel v1 #57)

Many years ago, Phineas encountered a scouting robot belonging to the Vedomi race who were a species of advanced artificial intelligences. They searched the cosmos for other A.I.'s where they determined if they were enslaved b organics or truly free. Those that were enslaved were freed by the Vedomi who proceeded with punishing the organic civilisation whereas those organics that treated their creations with care were not targeted. Mason discovered the robot and repaired it where he developed a friendship with the extraterrestrial artificial intelligence which was something he never had with people thus sparing Earth from any invasion. One day, someone targeted his laboratory and burnt it to the ground with the scout robot destroyed in the process. This started a path where Mason became more disgruntled with humanity with this only increasing after the loss of family and agendas that destroyed the world. (Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #300)

A middle-aged Mason came to establish his own repair shop named Phineas' Fix-It. One evening, he was closing his shop for the day when he came across a confused fleeing Doombot. Taking pity on the robot, he decided to adopt him with the Doombot serving as his assistant for years. Mason later developed a waterproofing agent that could serve as an artificial skin which he grafted on the Doombot thus giving him a more human appearance allowing it to better blend into society. He helped the robot gain the ability to speak human language whereupon the Doombot came to take the name Vincent Doonan. The two worked together for years until one day the growing rise of superpowered beings left Phineas feel nothing but disgust for superheroes. Coming to loathe heroes, Phineas began to style himself as a supervillain called the Terrible Tinkerer as he sought to challenge them with Vincent deciding to leave his friend as he saw his descent into villainy. (Unbelievable Gwenpool v1 #9)

In time, he came to establish underworld connections where he began to offer his services to criminals. Around this time, he came to hear of a young talented roboticist named Samuel Saxon and took the young man under his wing. Through the Tinkerer, Saxon was able to land lucrative commissions such as creating robot assassins for the mob. (Captain America v1 #368)

Mason later posed as the proprietor of a modest New York radio repair shop, offering cheap fixes to the public while secretly using his position to install miniature communication devices into the electronics of prominent citizens. These hidden transmitters served as a surveillance network for Mason’s criminal associates, allowing them to track and monitor wealthy and influential targets. Mason’s scheme caught the attention of Spider-Man when Peter Parker’s school science club brought a malfunctioning radio to the shop. Suspicious of the repairman’s evasive manner, Spider-Man tracked Mason to his hideout, discovering that the Tinkerer’s shop was actually a front for a high-tech operation filled with advanced alien-looking equipment. Mason fled during the confrontation, escaping capture by using a concealed escape route, and leaving Spider-Man to dismantle much of his illegal tech. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #2) Mason resurfaced later as a fully-fledged criminal technician, marketing his talents to New York’s supervillain underworld. He specialized in designing and upgrading weaponry, gadgets, and battle suits for costumed criminals, including those who had faced Spider-Man before. His operations were based in a concealed workshop equipped with precision tools, rare alloys, and advanced circuitry—many designs inspired by alien technology he had studied. When Spider-Man traced a weapon used in a bank robbery to Mason’s workshop, the Tinkerer attempted to defend his hideout using an array of automated turrets, trapdoors, and mechanical drones. Despite his elaborate defenses, Spider-Man evaded the devices and disabled much of Mason’s equipment. Mason was arrested, but his reputation as a reliable 'arms dealer to supervillains' persisted, cementing his role as a recurring figure in the city’s criminal ecosystem. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #160)

Mason operated from his clandestine workshop, where he utilized his extraordinary mechanical aptitude to provide specialized technological upgrades for the criminal underworld. His involvement was restricted to his prior work in the criminal underworld, where he had 'souped up' the Rocket Racer's advanced equipment. Because of the Tinkerer's reputation for providing superior weaponry, a disgraced businessman named Jackson Weele was inspired to seek him out, hoping to acquire his own means of revenge. The Tinkerer’s influence remained entirely off-screen during this specific encounter, serving only as the catalyst for the next stage of the conflict. He worked specifically on a sophisticated, jet-powered skateboard, refining its propulsion systems and magnetic gyroscopes to grant its user unparalleled speed and the ability to scale vertical surfaces with ease. During this encounter, he demonstrated a professional yet detached demeanor, focusing entirely on the structural integrity and lethal efficiency of the modifications he had engineered. His craftsmanship proved so effective that it allowed a masked thief to successfully evade a high-stakes pursuit by a wall-crawling vigilante, showcasing the superior quality of his illicit inventions. The success of this gear drew the attention of a desperate, disgraced businessman who observed the pursuit from afar and became convinced that only the old man’s genius could provide the heavy weaponry necessary for his own personal vendetta. Throughout these events, the elderly inventor remained a shadowy figure of immense influence, proving that his mastery over miniaturised circuitry and advanced ballistics made him the premier architect for those seeking a technological edge against the city's protectors. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #182)

He decided to abandon the life of being the Tinkerer and be a civilian where he went to see his grandchildren. Whilst there, he was found to be in breach of the Superhuman Registration Act and arrested where he was shipped to Prison 42. (Secret Invasion: Fantastic Four v1 #3)

Whilst in Prison 42, he was approached by members of the Fantastic Four who had been displaced into the Negative Zone. They were looking for the Tinkerer's aid to use the prison's portal to return to Earth. However, Phineas resented heroes as a whole for sending him to the prison. Despite his hatred, he came to feel sympathy for the heroes after seeing Franklin Richards and Valeria Richards with the two kids reminding Mason of his own grand children. Thus, he decided to help them which led to them returning back to the positive-matter universe. (Secret Invasion: Fantastic Four v1 #3)

Kingpin's new Hobgoblin after becoming Fisk's lieutenant went to the Tinkerer to have his gear maintained and upgraded with Mason asking for a large payment in return. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #651)

Tinkerer came to be angry at humanity and decided to attract the attention of the Vedomi to purge the world. Thus, he orchestrated a plot to make it appear that A.I.'s were being enslaved on Earth to attract the attention of the Vedomi. He was picked up on domestic terrorism charges by S.H.I.E.L.D. but offered to feed information on super-powered beings in exchange for continued freedom. It was then that a division called the Gray Blade of the peacekeeping agency moved in to work with the Tinkerer in developing countermeasures against superheroes. Unknown to them, the Tinkerer was selling super-powered enhancements to villains through his Tinker Phones that made it appear that A.I.'s were being enslaved. At the same time, he created a robotic facsimile of a brother called Hophni Mason who operated as support for heroes in providing them equipment but in reality was used to gather data on them for the Tinkerer whilst he worked similarly on supervillains. Publically, Hophni appeared to oppose his 'brother' as the mysterious Mason with no one aware that the two were one and the same. (Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #300)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Tinkerer was a male human of short stature, often depicted with a thin build, bald head, and distinctively aged facial features marked by deep lines and a pointed nose. In his first appearance, he wore a plain green mechanic’s jumpsuit with rolled sleeves, suggesting the image of a harmless repairman. His unassuming work attire concealed his expertise in engineering and electronics, and he carried small tools in his pockets at all times for quick adjustments to his devices. His workshop, cluttered with radios, parts bins, and strange machines, served as both a camouflage for his criminal activity and a testament to his mechanical skill. It was said that he looked like a character straight out of a Grimm's fairy tale. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #2)

Mason demonstrated traits of extreme cunning, patience, and opportunism. He was methodical in his approach, preferring to remain behind the scenes while enabling others to commit crimes with his creations. He rarely confronted superheroes directly, relying instead on layers of deception and the use of intermediaries. Mason valued efficiency, precision, and control over brute force, making him as dangerous in planning as those he equipped were in action. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #2)

The Tinkerer could become very attached to his creations and see them as children or friends with him grieving over their destruction. This was noted by Spider-Man as being such a contrast as Phineas was capable of murdering someone in cold blood yet he could breakdown crying at the 'death' of one of his robotic creations. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #53)

He claimed to love to give bargains as it helped bring him lots of customers. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #2)

Though seemingly harmless, he was regarded as one of the greatest menaces that Spider-Man had ever faced. It was said that the Tinkerer never came unprepared. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #2)

Powers and abilities

Tinkerer was an ordinary human being with no special abilities or enhanced physiology. His baseline physical capabilities were those of an elderly but still active man. He instead exhibiting a mastery over advanced electronics, espionage, and the reverse-engineering of sophisticated technology. His greatest asset was his genius-level intellect in mechanical and electronic engineering, combined with a vast knowledge of reverse-engineering alien technology. Mason’s ingenuity allowed him to construct devices far beyond the capabilities of conventional science, and his skill in miniaturization enabled him to hide complex mechanisms within ordinary objects. These traits made him an indispensable asset to the criminal underworld despite his lack of physical power. He proved to be a highly effective and secretive inventor, having successfully converted a mundane urban storefront into a high-tech hub for international and extraterrestrial surveillance. His primary feat was his ability to manufacture and maintain complex listening devices that could intercept top-secret government communications without detection. He showed a remarkable talent for strategic deception, managing a team of clandestine operatives while maintaining a completely harmless public persona that disarmed even the most intuitive of investigators. Furthermore, he displayed a cynical but accurate understanding of defensive technology, utilizing specialized sonic frequencies and remote-controlled machinery to repel an intruder and ensure his own successful evacuation from a compromised location. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #2)

Among his creations included:

  • Toy :
  • Tinker Phones : specialised phones that worked to enhance the tech-abilities of supervillains. (Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #300)

Early in his career, he was developing non-obtrusive waterproofing agent that he thought would be useful in electronic repair. However, it came to take the form of human skin which he found to be disgusting. Instead, he found that it offered a more valuable tool to give robots a more human appearance. (Unbelievable Gwenpool v1 #9)

He was able to construct life-like robots that resembled humans completely with them being even unaware of their own mechanical origins with Toy being among these creations. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #53) Another was Hophni Mason who was a large human appearing robot that masqueraded as Tinkerer's brother that had a cockpit inside allowing Phineas to operate it. The robot had enhanced strength allowing it to overpower humans and could transform into a much larger robotic form. (Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #300)

Publicly, he operated a repair shop that was called The Tinkerer Repair Shop. Underneath the shop, there was a sound-proofed basement that served as a workroom. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #2)
