History

The Thieves Guild was an organization of thieves that was created by Candra. It was formed from the disparate bands of thieves from around the world where they were approached by the Benefactress who offered them immortality. (Black Cat v1 #7) Candra was noted to had created the Guild centuries alongside the Assassins Guild where she set them up to provide services for her in exchange for the Elixir of Life and their powers. She reaped the rewards from both their services whilst using each to keep the other in check with this old rivalry being set up as a system from an earlier era when she was younger. (Gambit v1 #3) It was known that she had set up guilds in every corner of the globe for centuries. (Gambit v5 #16) No one new when the New York chapter of the Guild was formed with some believing it started with the city bank heist in 1831 whilst others thought it started with the Dutch merchant's 'purchase' of the island of Manhattan. Regardless of origin, this branch had a hand at every major score of the last few centuries such as the sentry armored car of Lufthansa. During their heist in the 1920's, bank robbers and those that ran the banks offered the Guild a ten percent tribute of their take in order to create a sense of union and order. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #9) At some point, the New York Thieves Guild was noted to had offended Candra and she withdrew her patronage. Thus, they were disgraced and excommunicated from the global Guilds and forced to become mortals. Blame was then placed on the leading family of thieves in New York that were the Drakes. (Black Cat v1 #7)

The members of the Thieves Guild operated as a secretive and highly organized criminal syndicate based in New Orleans, managing a vast network of theft, smuggling, and intelligence gathering. During their initial activities, they functioned under the leadership of Jean-Luc LeBeau and maintained a complex territorial truce with their rivals, the Assassins Guild. They engaged in large-scale strategic thefts of high-value assets and technology, utilizing a combination of traditional cat-burglary techniques and superhuman mutant abilities to bypass advanced security systems. The guild members conducted coordinated scouting missions to monitor the movements of international threats and rival factions, ensuring the security of their subterranean headquarters beneath the city. They participated in ritualised negotiations and the payment of tithes to their immortal patron, Candra, to ensure the continued prosperity and longevity of their lineage. To protect their territory, the guild deployed rapid-response teams equipped with specialized tools for infiltration and evasion, focusing on the retrieval of stolen items and the extraction of captured members. They enforced a strict internal code that prioritized the survival of the collective and the preservation of their cultural traditions, often utilizing the city's complex sewer systems and hidden passageways to move undetected by law enforcement. Throughout this period, the organization focused on maintaining the balance of power within the Louisiana criminal underworld while secretly preparing for potential betrayals from their long-standing rivals. (Gambit v1 #1)

Typically, the Guild never stole from people who could not afford having items taken from them but this came to change among the divided factions in the organization. Rumours began to spread of some groups resorting to kidnapping and others running weapons without caring about the results. Jean-Luc LeBeau attempted to keep the Guilds together but were unable to influence them. In an effort to maintain unity, Jean-Luc believed that his adoptive son Remy LeBeau could act in the role of stabilising the guilds by becoming the King of Thieves. (Gambit v5 #16)

A combination of organised crime and the rise of supervillains caused the influence of the New York chapter of the Thieves Guild to lose its influence with people forgetting the old ways. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #9) Under the leadership of Odessa Drake, the Thieves Guild decided to strike from the shadows in order to showcase their power in a world filled with superheroes and supervillains. Thus, they began a mass campaign of stealing valuable items from super-powered beings as they sought to show the honor of thieves. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #8) They stole the personal items of many superheroes with Spider-Man and Black Cat looking to stop them where they informed the owners of the location of their stolen goods. As such, they had to depart rather than take their prize but ultimately their goal had succeeded as the criminal community decided to start paying their dues to the Thieves Guild one more. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #10)

In an effort to grow strong, the Thieves Guild surrendered to the reborn Candra who brought a union between them and the Assassins Guild. During this time, she sought to remove Gambit as King of the Thieves and gather a sacrifice in order to restore herself to power as her resurrection brought her into the body of a child. (Mr. and Mrs. X v1 #11)

Overview

In appearance, the Thieves Guild were a tight-knit and clandestine society of high-level larcenists who functioned as a highly organized and ancient criminal fraternity. They were a disciplined and ritualistic team, governed by a strict patriarchal structure and a traditionalist code of conduct that required absolute loyalty to the Guild Master and the collective. The organization operated with a degree of formality that included blood-bound pacts and ceremonial tithes, treating the art of theft as a hereditary profession passed down through generations. Their goals and objectives were centered on the acquisition of wealth, the gathering of sensitive global intelligence, and the maintenance of their territorial sovereignty within the New Orleans underworld. They sought to secure the continued favor of their immortal benefactor, Candra, while upholding a precarious truce with the rival Assassins Guild to ensure the survival of their lineage. Regarding their clothing and costume, the members typically adopted attire that facilitated stealth, agility, and the concealment of specialized equipment. This often included dark-coloured bodysuits, reinforced leather jackets, and tactical vests equipped with numerous pouches for lockpicks, electronic hacking tools, and climbing gear. Many members utilized hooded cloaks or high-collared coats to obscure their features during night operations, while their day-to-day attire allowed them to blend seamlessly into the diverse social strata of the French Quarter. Their visual identity was defined by a practical elegance, combining modern tactical utility with traditional accessories that signified their rank and familial ties within the guild’s long history. (Gambit v1 #1)

Ordinary people considered them an old wives tale and a myth. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #8) It was said that the Guild abhorred violence though it did not allow outsiders into their territory. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #10)

The members of the Thieves Guild demonstrated a specialized array of abilities focused on high-stakes larceny, stealth, and tactical evasion. Their basic skills included a mastery of infiltration techniques, such as the manual bypassing of mechanical locks and the electronic hacking of advanced security grids to access secure vaults. They exhibited superhuman agility and acrobatic proficiency, allowing them to navigate complex architectural structures and avoid motion-sensing trigger systems with precision. They also showed a high degree of technical expertise in the use of specialized climbing gear, grappling hooks, and portable cloaking devices designed to minimize their heat signatures and visual presence. In combat, they favored defensive and disorienting tactics, utilizing smoke pellets and flash-bangs to facilitate rapid retreats or to reposition themselves behind opponents. They also displayed an advanced knowledge of international logistics and intelligence gathering, maintaining a global network of informants to track the movement of high-value artifacts and rival organizations. Additionally, the guild members were trained in the use of small, concealable weaponry for close-quarters self-defense, ensuring they could neutralize threats while prioritizing the successful extraction of their stolen objectives. (Gambit v1 #1)

It consisted of the ten families of the thieves. (Gambit v1 #1) The Guild had chapters all around the world with each having their own set of rules and history. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #9) Leadership of the thieves was held during the calling of the high council. (Gambit v1 #1) It consisted of members that held the position of Cardinal Thieves. (Gambit v5 #16) Individual enclaves of the guild were led by a member who held the position of guildmaster. (Gambit v5 #17)

They tended to serve the Benefactress Candra as she offered them the Elixir of Life that could grant immortality. (Black Cat v1 #7)

The Guild maintained an island that served as a central location similar to the United Nations for their operations around the world. (All-New X-Factor v1 #3) One location was the Stolen Island situated in the Mediterranean which the Guild made use never appeared on any map. (Gambit v5 #16) The New York Guild was noted to keep its cut of profits within the Vaults whose location was unknown and was considered impenetrable. In reality, their position was remote as they were located in an extradimensional space with no doors to allow entry. (Black Cat v1 #1)

Notes

  • The Thieves Guild was created by Howard Mackie and Lee Weeks where they made their first appearance in Gambit v1 #1 (December, 1993).
  • Writer Nick Spencer commented in an interview that, "In the next issue, we'll show that there are a number of Thieves Guilds. Each have their own history and rules. We're dealing with the Thieves Guild of New York. X-Fans are obviously very familiar with the Thieves Guild of New Orleans. This group has some similarities and some key differences as well. They're their own, distinct chapter... My idea here is guilds like this would be very localized. What would best serve a thief in New York might be very different from what would serve a thief down south."

Television

  • In X-Men, the Thieves Guild featured in the 1990s animated television series in the episode "X-Ternally Yours". They were a centuries old group that had an age old rivalry with the Assassins Guild. For 300 years, they had provided tribute to the X-Ternal as part of the terms of the tithe every 10 years. After the last tithe, the thieves representative failed to show proper respect and was killed as a result with the X-Ternal warning that the next failure by either party would see their guild eliminated. For the next tithe, Bobby LeBeau was made the Chosen of the Thieves Guild to provide the next tithe. Remy LeBeau who became the Mutant called Gambit left the Thieves Guild but returned after Belladonna of the Assassins Guild kidnapped his brother Bobby. This was part of an attempt by the assassins to switch an empty box for the thieves tribute so that the X-Ternal would be angered and eliminate their guild. The deception was uncovered by the X-Men with Gambit asking the X-Ternal depower Belladonna rather than destroyed the Assassins Guild.
