History

Michael Holt and his team in The Terrifics v1 #1.

The Terrifics were a team that came to form around Mister Terrific Michael Holt. The group mobilized to investigate a celestial anomaly involving the body of a giant being located within the Dark Multiverse. Mister Terrific, Plastic Man, Metamorpho, and Phantom Girl utilized a specialized spacecraft and high-tech tracking equipment to navigate a spatial rift that led them to the discovery of a long-missing explorer. During the operation, the individuals became physically tethered to one another by a surge of dark energy, which prevented them from separating beyond a certain distance without experiencing extreme physical distress. The group engaged with the biological and mechanical systems of the giant entity, attempting to stabilize the environment while managing their own involuntary physical transformations and phase-shifting. Mister Terrific utilized his T-Spheres to analyze the energy signatures and map the surrounding void, while Metamorpho and Plastic Man provided structural support and physical defense against environmental hazards. Phantom Girl utilized her ability to phase through solid matter to investigate the core of the anomaly, eventually discovering a message left by a previous traveler. The mission concluded with the group successfully returning to their home dimension, albeit with their newfound physical connection intact, necessitating their continued cooperation to find a solution to their condition. (The Terrifics v1 #1) The newly formed group escaped the nightmare realm of the Dark Multiverse and returned to Earth-0, landing directly back inside Simon Stagg’s laboratory compound. Believing their bizarre mission was successfully completed, Mister Terrific attempted to abandon the rest of the survivors, preparing to venture out on a solo quest across the broader multiverse to track the origins of Tom Strong's distress message. However, as soon as he traveled a short distance away from the compound, an intense cosmic feedback loop violently snapped him backward, knocking him unconscious and forcing the four individuals back into immediate proximity. Upon conducting a series of scientific scans, Mister Terrific calculated that their exposure to the Dark Multiverse's portal antenna had permanently altered their molecular structures, leaving them bound together by a volatile dark energy tether. This cosmic restriction meant that the four individuals could no longer travel more than roughly one mile away from one another without triggering a catastrophic, potentially fatal energetic backfire, effectively forcing them to remain as an inseparable unit. (The Terrifics v1 #2)

The accidental allies found themselves forced to cohabitate at Stagg’s mansion while Mister Terrific worked tirelessly in the laboratory to engineer a technological cure for their dark energy tether. The baseline domestic tension escalated when Simon Stagg threatened them with severe legal action for invading his private facilities, all while Metamorpho’s strained relationship with Sapphire Stagg collapsed under the weight of his permanent elemental curse. Meanwhile, Phantom Girl pleaded desperately with Mister Terrific to find a scientific method to bridge the spatial gap between Earth and her intangible homeworld of Bgtzl so she could contact her long-lost family. The localized squabbling was violently interrupted when a gargantuan, automated war wheel weapon bypassed the estate's perimeters and launched a destructive raid on the mansion grounds. Forcing aside their deep personal differences, the four heroes pulled off their first coordinated team defense to systematically dismantle the berserk machine, only for a post-battle analysis to reveal that the weapon was an altered Stagg Enterprises invention deliberately sicced on the house by an unknown saboteur. (The Terrifics v1 #3) The squad boarded an advanced multiversal transit vessel known as the Terrific-Sphere to chart a direct hyperspace course toward Bgtzl so Phantom Girl could finally achieve her long-sought homecoming. En route, their starship was abruptly ensnared by a massive intergalactic junk freighter, trapping the heroes inside a sprawling, hostile waste disposal unit filled with cosmic scallywags and space pirates. The team was forced to split into unlikely pairs to navigate the treacherous alien interior, culminating in a chaotic, multi-level skirmish when a monstrous giant space squid launched a predatory rampage through the garbage decks. Combining their separate abilities to neutralize the beast and break free from the freighter, they successfully crossed the threshold into the Phantom World of Bgtzl. While Phantom Girl celebrated a tearful reunion with her family, the joy was immediately shattered when she discovered that due to temporal dilation, her ten years stranded in the Dark Multiverse equated to over thirty years on her homeworld, leaving her father dead and her remaining loved ones drastically aged—a tragic cosmic calculation that Mister Terrific had secretly anticipated all along. (The Terrifics v1 #4)

Overview

In appearance, the Terrifics were a reluctant and unconventional quartet of disparate individuals who functioned as an emergency exploration and investigative unit within the Dark Multiverse. The group operated with a chaotic and informal dynamic rather than a structured military hierarchy, initially brought together by proximity and a shared environmental crisis rather than a formal charter. Their primary goals and objectives were centered on the investigation of high-level multiversal anomalies, the retrieval of lost explorers, and the containment of unstable energies that threatened the fabric of reality. They acted as a reactive task force, dedicated to surviving the lethal conditions of the Dark Multiverse while attempting to sever the dark energy bond that physically tethered them to one another. Regarding their clothing and costumes, the members wore varied attire that reflected their unique physical properties and specialized roles. Mister Terrific wore a sleek, black-and-white high-tech tactical suit emblazoned with "Fair Play" logos, integrated with a T-mask and orbiting T-Spheres. Plastic Man remained in his traditional red-and-yellow flexible uniform with darkened goggles, while Metamorpho’s appearance was defined by his multi-textured, elemental body, often appearing in a simple dark brief to accommodate his constant physical shifting. Phantom Girl wore a white-and-black uniform featuring a stylized "P" emblem, designed to remain intact while she phased through solid objects. Their visual identity was marked by their contrasting textures—ranging from rigid mechanical armor to malleable, translucent, and elemental forms—reflecting their diverse origins and the involuntary nature of their alliance. (The Terrifics v1 #1)

The personnel of the Terrifics demonstrated a combination of peak human intellect, advanced robotics, molecular transmutation, and intangible navigation during their initial mission. One member exhibited a genius-level aptitude for multi-tasking and engineering, utilizing a series of autonomous, floating robotic spheres to perform complex environmental scans, generate holographic projections, and provide concussive offensive support. Another individual displayed a total mastery over his molecular structure, allowing him to stretch his limbs across vast distances, reshape his entire body into functional objects, and absorb high levels of physical impact without sustaining damage. The group also included a member capable of instantaneous elemental transmutation, possessing the ability to convert his physical form into any chemical element or compound, such as gas, liquid, or solid minerals, to adapt to environmental hazards. One operative demonstrated the specialized ability to phase through solid matter and high-density energy fields, rendering her body intangible and allowing her to bypass physical security measures or navigate safely through hazardous machinery. Additionally, these individuals exhibited the technical proficiency required to operate advanced interdimensional spacecraft and utilize theoretical physics to track anomalies across the multiverse. These diverse skills allowed the group to survive the lethal conditions of the Dark Multiverse and interact with biological systems on a planetary scale. (The Terrifics v1 #1)
