Biography

Teela was a female human inhabitant of Eternia who was born the biological daughter of the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull. Her mother had to give away her infant daughter and left her in the care of Man-At-Arms who came to raise her as his own daughter.

Teela met He-Man when she was caught by Skeletor and Beast Man, and brought to Castle Grayskull to become Skeletor's bride, but she was freed by He-Man and Man-At-Arms. Teela once was summoned to Castle Grayskull by the Spirit of Grayskull, awaiting for its rightful king to come, but Skeletor tricked her into believing he was the king, then captured her and He-Man. He-Man tore the dungeon door from its hinges, and both he and Teela faced the Castle defenses until Skeletor lost the Power Sword and fled. When Skeletor agreed to give He-Man's weapons to Mer-Man if he defeated him, they stole Teela's unicorn so the ocean warlord could reach He-Man. When Skeletor decided to take vengeance on He-Man, he sent Beast Man and Mer-Man to ambush the hero on his way to a meeting with Teela. After the villains overpowered He-Man, Teela arrived too late to help and could only see Mer-Man taking He-Man to the distance, so she called Stratos for help. The Heroic Warriors reunited and found the Evil Warriors trying to break into Castle Grayskull. Seeing Skeletor using energy blasts to punish his own minions gave He-Man the idea of using the Heroic Warriors' own energy blasts to make the Evil Warriors flee. During a trip to enoy some sun and fresh air, the other Heroic Warriors left He-Man and Teela alone to let them spend a romantic evening, but their sweet words to each other were interrupted by the arrival of the mercenary Tri-Klops.

Overview

Personality and attributes

Teela always pushed herself to be the most skilled and accomplished warrior in the Kingdom of Eternos. This was because she would always be judged against her father Man-At-Arms accomplishments which led to Teela never failing to rise to a challenge.

Powers and abilities

Teela is a great weapons master and fighter as well. She trained at a very young age at fighting and weapon mastery and is the captain of the royal guard of Eternia.

Due to being the daughter of the Sorceress, in some stories she is sometimes shown having magical powers, even comparable to those of the Sorceress herself.

He-Man, Man-At-Arms, and Teela were watching a skilled wizard, when Skeletor began siphoning all magic from Eternia, suddenly the wizard almost collapsed in pain, and Teela also felt some weakness due to her magical origins.

Notes

  • Teela was created by Mattel where she featured in the setting of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
  • Writer Donald F. Glut in an interview said that he named the character after Gunga Ram's elephant from the Andy's Gang television show.

Television

  • In He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Teela appeared in the setting of the 1980s animated television series where she was voiced by actress Linda Gary. Years before the appearance of He-Man, Man-At-Arms prevented the evil warrior, Mer-Man, from sacrificing Zoar to the demon, Bakkull. Afterward, Man-At-Arms ascended to Zoar's nest and found a baby girl - the daughter of Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, Teela. The Sorceress was unable to raise Teela herself due to her responsibility guarding Castle Grayskull, and gave her into the care of Man-At-Arms, concealing her identity from Teela so as to not place her in danger. Man-At-Arms raised at the Royal Palace of Eternia and taught her combat skills. As a teenager, Teela studied in the city of widsom with the wizard, Mallek. Mallek harboured romantic feelings for Teela, which she did not reciprocate. The strong willed, independent, and often hot headed Teela eventually rose to become Captain of the Palace Guard. While searching for clues as to what happened to her mother and father, Teela learned from the Oracle of the Crystal Sea that she was the daughter of the Sorceress and was one day destined to take her place as the guardian of Castle Grayskull. Though she desperately wished she could tell Teela the truth, the Sorceress erased all knowledge of these events from Teela's mind. Despite this, Teela still had a subconscious bond with the Sorceress and could often sense her love. One one occasion, Teela temporarily assumed the role of Sorceress when her mother was banished to another dimension by Skeletor. Despite her excellent fighting skills and typically being sensible and level-headed, Teela had a reckless streak and would often disobey her father's orders. Unaware of Adam's dual-identity and the duties that go with it, Teela often scolded him for being work-shy, fearful and unattentive to his training. Teela had a romantic attraction to He-Man and flirted with him on several occasions.
  • In The New Adventures of He-Man, Teela briefly appeared in the setting of the 1990s animated television series in the episode "Once Upon a Time" where she was voiced by actress Cathy Weseluck.
  • In He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Teela appeared in the setting of the 2000s animated television series where she was voiced by actress Lisa Ann Beley. This version sported her hair being tied in a long ponytail where she was shown as being brasher and slightly more aggressive. Teela was the daughter of the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, and was adopted by Man-At-Arms when she was a child. Teela's father was a soldier who served during the great unrest, but he disappeared some time before Teela was born. Teela maintained a friendship with Prince Adam and assisted in his battle training, but she often teased or reprimanded Adam for his apparent lack of courage and gumption, while harboring an unspoken and unconsummated crush on his alter-ego, He-Man. One one occasion, Teela was injured in battle and had to have a blood transfusion from her mother, the Sorceress. Following the transfusion, Teela developed telepathic powers for a brief time, which later faded away. The incident left Teela suspicious as to her true connection to the Sorceress.
  • In Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Teela appeared in the setting of the 2021 animated television series where she was voiced by actress Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Films

  • In Masters of the Universe, Teela appeared in the setting of the 1987 live-action film where she was portrayed by actress Chelsea Field. Teela was a vegetarian, and became disgusted when Man-At-Arms ate meat of any kind. She got mildly jealous when He-Man grew close to Julia Winston; still, Teela remained steadfast and loyal. When He-Man surrendered his sword to Skeletor in exchange for his friends' release, Teela cried out...objecting to He-Man's trading his own life for theirs. Teela later fought alongside Man-At-Arms, Lubic, Gwildor, and the Earthlings against Skeletor's forces at Grayskull ultimately driving them off.
