Biography

Tamara Rahn was a female inhabitant of the planet Laab which was destroyed leading to her stowing on-board a ship that helped the males of her race escape to Earth. After landing, all her people except for herself were killed by the native aquatic Atlanteans who had mistaken them for enemies. (Sub-Mariner v1 #56) She would seek revenge against the people of Atlantis for the slaughter of her kin but her plan was foiled by Namor the Sub-Mariner. Tamara came to be forgiven for her actions and was befriended by both Namor and Lord Vashti leading to her being granted status as an honorary Atlantean citizen. (Sub-Mariner v1 #58)

Namor returned to Atlantis, and was introduced by Vashti to Tamara and her cause. The Atlanteans helped repair her space ship and send her on her way. Seeking revenge for the death of her people, she turned her ship's weapons on Atlantis forcing a confrontation with Namor. Namor subdued her and destroyed her ship. Tamara threw herself at the mercy of Vashti and was put under the guardianship of Namor. A pompous and arrogant Atlantean soldier, Lorvex, made a pass at Tamara who rebuked his advances. She was later caught in a fishing net and eventually brought to New York City. Namor learned of her capture and made his way there only to be challenged by Thor. Namor engaged Thor but was defeated by the Thunder God. Namor returned home to ponder a full-scale invasion of the surface world. (Sub-Mariner v2 #59)

Namor put his trust in Lorvex to assemble a force which Namor would lead against the surface dwellers to free Tamara. The invasion was a success in providing a daunting show of force, but Namor was unable to find Tamara as she had been rescued by Lorvex who decided to keep her as a hostage and continue the onslaught against the surface world. Namor defeated Lorvex and rescued Tamara. He then called off the surface attack and after addressing the UN returned to his undersea realm where he was once again crowned Prince of Atlantis. Tamara left Atlantis to live with the Hydro-Men. She was captured alongside them by Attuma, Doctor Dorcas, and Tiger Shark, but was saved once more by Namor. (Super-Villain Team-Up v1 #3)

She came to serve as a spy for Namor where she joined the ranks of the Atlantean terrorist group known as the Fathom Five. Tamara served as an inside agent where she reported on their activities. Despite that, she was unable to stop them when they launched attacks on Beijing and Manhattan. (New Thunderbolts v1 #9)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Tamara Rahn was a strikingly tall and statuesque female alien of the Banari race, distinguishable by her scarlet skin, which shimmered slightly with aquatic luster. Her hair was depicted as flowing, copper-red, often splayed or rippling as though underwater even when in air. Her eyes were large, almond-shaped, and golden, with black sclerae that marked her as clearly non-human. Tamara’s physique was muscular yet graceful, designed for swift aquatic movement—her limbs long and tapered, her fingers slightly webbed. Her original attire was minimal and practical, typical of aquatic alien cultures, comprising a green and gold one-piece garment with scale-like patterns and a flowing sash at her hip. Her overall presence was commanding yet exotic, evoking both the elegance and danger of a deep-sea predator. (Sub-Mariner v1 #58)

Tamara Rahn was introduced with a complex and multifaceted personality, driven by grief, honor, and a fierce independence. Upon arriving on Earth and encountering Namor and his people, she was openly aggressive, assuming hostility and seeking vengeance for the genocide of her fellow Banari, who had been killed by the Atlanteans in a tragic misunderstanding. Her sense of justice was immediate and fiery—she confronted her perceived enemies directly and without hesitation. (Sub-Mariner v1 #58)

Notes

  • Tamara Rahn was created by Bill Everett, Steve Gerber and Sam Kweskin where she made her first appearance in Sub-Mariner v1 #58 (February, 1973).
  • In Back Issue! v1 #21 (2016), writer Glenn Herdling recounted about his predecessor on the series Bob Harras, "...had brought back Tamara Rahn and had introduced a love affair between her and Tiger Shark, which I went with. Bob had given me only one dictate: Don't kill Tamara! It was actually a blessing, because in the 'Starblast' crossover I was able to provide closure to the story that had introduced her 20 years earlier."
