History

The Space Gem was one of the Infinity Gems where it was a relic capable of manipulating space It was said to be traced to a cosmic being that existed before all recorded time. Alone in the cosmos, the entity felt only a lonely existence leading to it ending its life and from its body emerged the Infinity Gems which included the Space Gem. (Thanos Quest v1 #2)

For a time, the five combined Gems were thought to be destroyed, but a conclave of the Elders of the Universe eventually learned that they could not be truly destroyed in such a manner and that they were actually scattered across the universe. Having a plan to use the Gems to further their ambitions, the Elders set out to gather them together again. Of these, only the Mind Gem's circumstances were specified, having come into possession of the Kree. The Champion won one of the other Gems as the World Trophy of Grinx, the Collector collected one, and the Trader purchased the other two. (Silver Surfer v3 #7) The Elders eventually succeeded in gathering all six Gems together and connected them into a space platform aligned with a star system with six desolate planets the Gems could resonate with, setting up a trap for Galactus. Their apparatus would steal planetary energies from Galactus, channeling them into the planets, thus killing Galactus and subsequently Eternity due to the loss of balance that Galactus maintained. The universe would end and be reborn, with only the Elders surviving due to their earlier victory over Death. (West Coast Avengers Annual v1 #2) Though the Elders successfully trapped Galactus, they failed to handle interference from his heralds. While the Silver Surfer blocked the ray from the Gem apparatus, Nova detonated the star at the center of the system, creating a black hole that consumed the Gems and some of the Elders, saving Galactus. (Silver Surfer v3 #9)

The stone was later used to reforge the Infinity Gauntlet that was being used by the Illuminati to save Earth-616 during an Incursion event that saw an alternate Earth about to collide with it. However, use of the Gauntlet resulted in the gem shattering in the effort to push away the other Earth and preventing a multiversal collision. (New Avengers v3 #3)

The gem came to bond with a person on Earth giving him space manipulation abilities where he went by the name Quantum. (Iron Man Annual v3 #1)
