History

Origin

The Source was a mass of energy that was created during the beginning of the cosmos where there existed nothing but the void. This mass of energy coalesced the entity that was known as the Source that heralded the beginning of the First World. (Jack Kirby's Fourth World v1 #1) It was said to had lived when even the Old Gods had died. (New Gods v1 #1) Eons ago, when the great world of the Old Gods was destroyed did a cosmic wave emanate from the cataclysm with this being known as the Godwave. As the Godwave spread across the universe, it seeded placed the seeds of divinity among many worlds creating the first pantheons of gods. Upon expanded to its full limit, it doubled back creating a second passage of its power whereby superhuman abilities were imparted on mortals as a result. It was said that this energy gave rise to the Speed Force, the Quantum Field and the Emotional Spectrum. (Genesis v1 #2)

As the Godwave affected the Source, Ares sought to tap into this power into becoming the supreme being and herald a new Fifth World with the war god ruling creation. (Genesis v1 #4)

Highfather again invoked it as the ultimate authority against Darkseid, describing it as the guiding essence of creation itself. The Source did not intervene directly but was presented as the reason the cosmic balance between New Genesis and Apokolips existed. (New Gods v2 #6)

The Source was alluded to during the heroes’ battle with the Anti-Life Entity. Here, the Source was portrayed as the natural counter to Anti-Life, representing freedom, growth, and creativity in contrast to control and annihilation. The story reinforced that the Source was the very metaphysical foundation that beings like Darkseid sought to corrupt. (Cosmic Odyssey v1 #6)

the Source itself was the true power behind the 'Flame of Creation'. During Darkseid’s fall, the Source used the embodiment of Superman to channel the Miracle Machine and restore the multiverse. This event directly tied the Source to the origin and renewal of creation, confirming its role not only as the foundation of existence but also as the agent of cosmic rebirth. (Final Crisis v1 #7)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new history was created with a different timeline of events.

At some point, the Source became bonded to a being of unknown provenance known as the Mother Entity. Though their connection was not marriage in any traditional sense, the Mother Entity was considered to be the Source's bride. The Mother Entity was the energy tapped into by the Mother Boxes of the Fourth World. (Bug! The Adventures of Forager v1 #6)

Long ago, an ancient deity that came to be known as Zonuz brought death and destruction in the universe as he served as the god of evil. This was until he fell at the hands of his own son with his essence returning to the Source. (Justice League - Darkseid War: Shazam v1 #1)

After the death of Darkseid, the champion Shazam whose power was wielded by Billy Batson had his abilities disrupted leading to the Wizard seeking others to replace it. Among those was Zonuz who sought to use Batson as a means of escaping his imprisonment within the Source. (Justice League - Darkseid War: Shazam v1 #1)

Overview

In appearance, the Source was not a physical entity in the traditional sense, but a vast, invisible, transcendent field of metaphysical energy that existed beyond the veil of known reality. It occupied a realm referred to as the Source Wall, which stood as the final boundary of the multiverse, separating all creation from the unknowable. While the Source rarely manifested a tangible form, it was sometimes interpreted or visualized by cosmic entities as a blinding presence of infinite light or as an all-encompassing vibration of universal order. The Source was everywhere and nowhere, a constant presence felt by gods, New Gods, and cosmic beings alike. Though unseen, it was believed to dwell just beyond the Source Wall at the edge of existence, and it could be heard or received by those attuned to its frequency through visions, prophecy, or divine communion. Its presence was both holy and terrifying, a concept more than a creature, revered as the origin of all things. (New Gods v1 #1)

The Source was described as the primal energy from which all life and power flowed, existing beyond the physical universe. It did not manifest directly but was instead represented as an unreachable force that only the most enlightened beings could attempt to contact. (New Gods v1 #1)

It was described as being eternal and as the all as well as beyond the all. (Jack Kirby's Fourth World v1 #1) The Source was said to had been eternal and as the Life Equation. (New Gods v1 #1) It was the place where all power had flowed including those of a mystical origin. (Genesis v1 #4)

As the primordial force of creation, the Source was the wellspring from which all gods, matter, life, and cosmic laws emerged. It represented the pure logic of existence and the foundation of cosmic balance. Among the New Gods of New Genesis and Apokolips, the Source was worshipped as a divine intelligence—the ultimate power that governed fate and the cycle of death and rebirth. The Source was responsible for granting or withdrawing the life force that empowered deities, and it once split itself from the Anti-Life Equation to allow free will to exist in the universe. Though it seldom acted directly, its will could be interpreted through omens, cosmic upheaval, or avatars chosen to correct imbalance. Its nature remained ineffable even to the gods, a mystery at the heart of existence whose motives were inscrutable and whose essence was absolute. (New Gods v1 #1)

The Source was portrayed as utterly impartial and detached. Unlike the Presence, it did not comfort, scold, or command—it simply was. It embodied the principle of order and existence, operating with neutrality beyond concepts of good and evil. However, through agents, it demonstrated a will toward sustaining life and balance in creation. (Final Crisis v1 #7)

It created and sustained the New Gods, existed as the natural opposite to the Anti-Life Equation, and maintained the cosmic order through its energy. Its essence was tied directly to the Source Wall, where it served as both gateway and boundary to the ultimate truths of existence. It was omnipresent across all realities and omnipotent within its domain, though it acted indirectly through its chosen agents and constructs. (New Gods v1 #1)

Both Alpha Energy and its antithesis Omega Energy originated from the Source with the two having capabilities being almost boundless. (Mister Miracle v3 #4)

It was shown that the Source had a female counterpart who was akin to a bride with this being the Mother Entity. (Bug! The Adventures of Forager v1 #6)

The Source was a place from which all things come and return with every god holding a parsonage there. (Justice League - Darkseid War: Shazam v1 #1) Within the Hadis afterrealm, the Source essence of the New Gods were confined and rejoined with their bodies. (Mister Miracle v3 #4) The Godwave energy generated from the destruction of the Old Gods great world was said to be responsible for many powers such as the Speed Force, the Quantum Field and the energy utilized by the inhabitants of Oa. (Genesis v1 #2)

Notes

  • The Source was created by Jack Kirby where it made its first appearance in New Gods v1 #1 (March, 1971).
  • In JLA v1 #9 (1997), the Key used a psycho-virus to put the Justice League into a dream state where they imagined separate worlds from reality. The dream of the Flash Wally West had him becoming a speedster after he was bequeathed a ring from the dying New God Fastbak that allowed him to access the Speed Source. This ring created a condensed hyperdimensional gel around him making him a manifestation of the Speed Source. The dream world experienced by Wally West thus merged the Source with the Speed Force.

Alternate Versions

  • In Tales from the Dark Multiverse: The Death of Superman v1 #1 (2019), an alternate reality was shown to exist within the Dark Multiverse showed a universe where the Black Lantern Corps dominated the cosmos. To step the undead scourge, Mister Miracle intended to break the Source Wall and release the random chaotic power of the Source that contained the cosmic energy of creation. The chaotic energy was said to be the antithesis of Nekron which he intended to channel into Dove so that she could wield the power to resurrect the Black Lanterns.
