Setsuna operated as a professional demon slayer within the Feudal Era of Japan under the direct leadership of Kohaku. While performing her duties, she was captured and interrogated alongside her companion Moroha by a government official named Kanto, who questioned them regarding their modern-era clothing items. During the inquiry, a multi-eyed demonic entity known as Mistress Three-Eyes violently breached the compound to steal the mystical Rainbow Pearls. Setsuna immediately engaged the creature in tactical field combat, utilizing her signature naginata to strike the monster alongside Moroha. During the chaotic skirmish, a mystical temporal corridor known as the Sacred Tree of Ages unexpectedly opened, pulling a modern-era teenage girl named Towa Higurashi into the battlefield. Setsuna immediately turned her weapon toward Towa Higurashi, completely failing to recognize her as her biological twin sister due to her childhood memories being systematically stolen by the mystical Dream Butterfly.

Personality and attributes
In appearance, Setsuna was a half-demon female with a slender, athletic build and a fair complexion. She possessed long, straight black hair that she wore tied back into a high ponytail, with a highly distinct streak of bright red hair running through her left bangs. Her eyes were sharp and dark brown, matching her serious facial expressions. Her specialized combat uniform consisted of the traditional dark, form-fitting bodysuit of the Demon Slayer corps, layered with protective deep violet armor plates strapped over her shoulders and torso. She wore deep violet boots with lavender trimmings and thick white fur cuffs at the shins. Over her right shoulder, she draped a massive, flowing white fur boa that trailed down her back, and she kept a small wooden sheath secured to her left waist for her secondary blades, maintaining a highly tactical, traditional, and battle-ready warrior presentation.
