Biography
Steven Hudak
A research chemist of good standing, Hudak was framed for embezzlement by a co-worker who planted incriminating evidence in Hudak's car. Unable to convince others of his innocence, Hudak went on the run. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #14)
Scorcher and his Strike Squad began stealing electronics designs at Osborn's behest. He breached the security perimeter, set several structures ablaze with concentrated streams of fire, and engaged guards sent to stop him. Scorcher and his gang ran afoul of Spider-Man, making short work of the novice crimefighter. During their battle, Scorcher used his flamethrower to launch blasts of fire in wide arcs, forcing Spider-Man into evasive maneuvers, and ignited surrounding machinery to create dangerous hazards. During a subsequent robbery, Scorcher and his team fared less well, encountering a better prepared police squad that forced the team to flee to an Osborn Chemical warehouse. While Scorcher attempted to reassure his gang that everything was going to plan, the surprise arrival of Spider-Man caused the Scorcher to begin shooting flames wildly around the warehouse while his gang attacked the hero. With the smoke and heat getting the better of Spider-Man, Scorcher believed he'd defeated him and in his arrogance failed to notice Spider-Man pull a watertower down through a widening hole in the roof. The sudden cold shattering his helmet and cracking his armor, Scorcher was defeated and taken into police custody. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #1) Following his first defeat, Scorcher resurfaced to resume his criminal activities, targeting financial institutions for theft. He stormed a bank, blasted open security measures with his incendiary weapon, and threatened civilians with streams of fire. Spider-Man again responded to the scene, and Scorcher attempted to overwhelm him by blanketing the interior with flames and forcing Spider-Man to protect bystanders. The encounter ended with Spider-Man trapping Scorcher in his own weapon’s fuel supply, rendering him unable to continue fighting and leading to another capture. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #12)
Scorcher was allegedly given a ten-to-fifteen year sentence for his crimes. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #14)
Scorcher took over the downtown Manhattan-based Filler-Up gas station, using it as a base of operations while he began a protection racket with nearby businesses. While he pulled in large sums of cash, Scorcher continually bemoaned the current state of his life, growing increasingly paranoid and bitter. Having taken care of the previous owner of the Filler-Up, Scorcher employed Midtown High drop-out Sean "Tiny" McKeever to handle the daily affairs of his front. Spotting Spider-Man webslinging near the Filler-Up and believing it was because his scheme had been uncovered, Scorcher attacked the wall-crawler. Returning to the Filler-Up after another night of extortion, the Scorcher began counting his haul when he was ambushed by Spider-Man. Blaming his current state on Spider-Man, Scorcher argued that he was prey to Spider-Man's hounding and victimization and revealed his origins to better explain himself. Furious at Spider-Man's assertion that Scorcher's turn to crime was because he was too cowardly to stand up for the truth, Scorcher struck back, easily knocking Spider-Man down. Distracted when Tiny stumbled onto the fight, Scorcher turned away from Spider-Man long enough for his foe to recover. His fuel tanks accidentally ruptured during Spider-Man's assault, Scorcher fled into a tunnel holding the gas station's underground tanks rather than leave himself at Spider-Man's mercy. Scorcher vanished in a massive explosion. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #14)
Scorcher later allied himself with other minor villains in an effort to gain greater recognition and resources. During one such operation, he joined in coordinated attacks designed to stretch Spider-Man’s defenses. He used his flame gear to provide heavy cover fire, scorching vehicles and barriers to block pursuit, while the other villains executed thefts and assaults. His role was that of a destructive distraction, and although he managed to cause widespread damage, Spider-Man defeated the group and turned Scorcher over to authorities once again. Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, the Scorcher was a male of African American descent with a broad, powerful build and dark, closely cropped hair. His facial features included brown eyes and a wide, determined jawline, though he was often seen with a concentrated or grimacing expression while operating his equipment. He possessed a muscular, stocky physique that allowed him to manage the considerable bulk and weight of his experimental armor. His costume consisted of a heavily insulated, full-body suit designed with a yellow and orange color scheme, accented by dark red or black detailing on the limbs. He wore a rounded yellow helmet with a dark visor that completely shielded his upper face and eyes from the smoke and intense glare of his own weapons. His forearms were encased in large, metallic gauntlets that housed his flame-projection nozzles, which were linked via thick, insulated tubing to a heavy, rectangular fuel reservoir strapped to his back. The suit featured reinforced plating at the chest and shoulders, as well as thick, armored boots containing the jet thrusters used for flight, giving him a formidable and industrial silhouette. His costume featured a flame-emitting backpack linked to gauntlets capable of projecting streams of fire. The suit also included a helmet with a faceplate and protective visor to shield him from smoke and heat, along with tubing and plating to protect against his own weapon’s backlash. This appearance made him stand out as a heavily armored fire-themed villain. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #1)
In personality, Scorcher was portrayed as an embittered and vengeful figure. A former research scientist who believed he had been wronged and ruined by accusations of fraud, he adopted a new life as a supervillain to strike back at institutions and people he blamed for his downfall. He displayed aggression and impatience during combat, but also a clear sense of bitterness and self-justification. His villainous persona came less from a love of crime and more from resentment, making him a dangerous but self-destructive opponent. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #1)
Powers and abilities
Steven Hudak utilised a technologically advanced suit of experimental armour that functioned primarily as a high-output flamethrowing system. The suit featured wrist-mounted nozzles capable of emitting sustained streams of intense fire, which he used to incinerate objects and create defensive barriers of flame. He demonstrated the ability to regulate the intensity of these thermal blasts, ranging from concentrated bursts to wide-reaching arcs. The armour was equipped with a back-mounted propulsion system that allowed for sustained flight and rapid aerial maneuvering, leaving a trail of exhaust in his wake. To protect the wearer from the extreme temperatures he generated, the suit was constructed from heat-resistant materials and included a fully enclosed helmet with a protective visor. Additionally, the exoskeleton of the suit provided Berkley with a degree of enhanced physical durability, allowing him to withstand blunt force impacts and small-arms fire that would otherwise injure an unprotected human. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #1)
In powers, Scorcher was an ordinary human but relied on his advanced flame-projecting equipment. His suit allowed him to generate streams of high-intensity fire, capable of melting barriers, igniting structures, and creating walls of flame. The armored suit protected him from heat, smoke, and minor physical impacts, while his gauntlets gave him offensive reach. He possessed no superhuman powers, but his scientific knowledge allowed him to maintain and improve his weaponry, keeping him a recurring nuisance for Spider-Man. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #1)
