History

Origin

Imperial Sakaarans in Skaar: Son of Hulk v1 #14.

Sakaar was a harsh world that was located in the Tayo star system in the Fornax Galaxy where it was one of eight planets orbiting the sun. (Planet Hulk: Gladiator Guidebook v1 #1)

At some unknown point, Sakaar was visited by a race of humanoids known as the Shadow People who gathered with them the Oldpower and came to settle on the planet. They were responsible for creating the Great Portal that randomly connected remote regions of space to the world thus bringing countless beings to Sakaar. It was the Shadow People who also spoke of a prophecy of the Sakaarson who would unite the planet. (Incredible Hulk v2 #101)

From Umegus, the Father Emperor waged military campaigns to unify the rival Imperial kingdoms in a time known as the Wars of Empire. (Planet Hulk Gladiator Guidebook v1 #1)

Two hundred years ago, the Dust Plague swept Sakaar and afflicted the Shadow People causing some tribes to revert to mysticism under the Saka Priests which drove out the Clear-Eyed Shadow. Another tribe withdrew to the Vanishing Tower where they spent their days preserving science and knowledge of their ancestors. (Skaar: Son of Hulk v1 #6) Many years ago, the planet came under attack from a race of beings known as the Spikes. These creatures released spores that sought out other life forms and infected them in order to spread their kind. (Incredible Hulk v2 #98) Around this time, Ol-Sahm sought to save the people of the planet and journeyed to the Saka temple containing one of the Shadow People's stone starships. He sought a champion to help save Sakaar and used the technology of the ship to open a portal in the hope of summoning a hero to save the world. Thus, the prophecy of the Sakaarson began to form that spoke of a prophecised saviour that would come in many guises. Among the first beings to come through the portal was the robotic Death's Head Guards. (Skaar: Son of Hulk v1 #6)

In 536 Post at the height of the Spike War, a cosmic vortex opened in the planet's orbit that emitted a powerful blast of energy which shattered the moon Sabyr and caused massive earthquakes along with tidal waves on Sakaar's surface. This combined with the Spike War was seen as a sign of the end of times to the Sakaarans but they portal became a value source of off-world technology and extraterrestrial species as it brought detritus from across space to the planet. In time, the vortex came to be referred to as the Great Portal and came to be seen as a boon rather than a curse to the inhabitants of Sakaar. (Planet Hulk Gladiator Guidebook v1 #1)

For years, the Red King was noted to had bombed the lands of Fillia where the rich farmland was burnt to become a barren sands. (Incredible Hulk v1 #709)

Long ago, in her formative years, a youthful Gamora found herself deeply entrenched in the clutches of Thanos, accompanied the Mad Titan on a fateful mission to the planet Sakaar. In the heat of battle, the confrontation turned merciless, resulting in the tragic loss of many Sakaaran Natives. Amidst the chaos, Gamora herself suffered grievous injury, her right leg maimed beyond repair. In a swift and decisive move to ensure her survival, she underwent the augmentation of her severed limb, its organic remnants replaced by a cybernetic counterpart. However, what followed etched a defining moment in Gamora's tumultuous relationship with Thanos. As she returned to the fray, driven by determination and defiance, she faced an ultimatum from the imposing figure of Thanos himself. He coldly declared that any further damage to her reconstructed limb would not be met with a replacement. Resolute and unwilling to concede to Thanos' dictates, Gamora chose a startling act of rebellion. Knowing the stakes, she eschewed the use of her newly cybernetic limb, instead relying on her vulnerable, flesh-and-blood arms to fend off her adversaries. It was a bold display of protest, a gesture both brave and defiant, despite the pain and peril it brought. (Thanos v3 #3)

Planet Hulk

The Hulk came to accidentally crash on Sakaar when his ship was swallowed by a wormhole forcing it to land on the planet's surface. Shortly afterwards, he came to be found by Sakaaran slavers who implanted an obedience disk on him thus forcing him to obey their commands. As a slave gladiator, he was forced by a governor to participate in a fight in the arena for the entertainment of the Red King. At first, the Sakaaran emperor was not impressed but took notice of the Green Goliath who overcame his opponents. The Hulk then decided to challenge the Red King who decided to accept the duel in his exo-skeletal armor. Due to being more nimble, the Red King managed to outmanoeuvre his opponent but came to be overwhelmed by his foe's greater strength. During the fight, the Sakaaran emperor suffered a cut on his cheek and in anger he had his guards render the Hulk unconscious from a stun blast and shipped to the Maw gladiator training school with the expectation that the off-worlder would die there. (Incredible Hulk v2 #92) Instead, the Hulk became a skilled gladiator in the slave pits where his reputation grew to the point that the people knew him as the Green Scar. During the matches, he came to form a team that included former Captain Lavin Skee, Elloe Kaifi, Hiroim, Arch-E-5912, Korg, Miek and No-Name of the Brood. Their growing fame was seen as a threat to the Red King with the Sakaaran Democratic Insurgency freeing the gladiators in the hope that the Green Scar would lead them to depose the Sakaaran emperor. (Incredible Hulk v2 #93)

This led to widescale revolt on the planet as the Sakaaran Natives began to rally under the banner of the Green Scar and acted against the Imperials. Similarly, slaves began to revolt within the arenas even within Crown City causing the emperor to snap and kill them. (Incredible Hulk v2 #97)

During this time, the Warbound came to meet the elders of the Spikes where they learnt the true origins of the seeming parasitic race. The creatures were actually peaceful beings that had feasted on cosmic energy in deep space but after being trapped on Sakaar their spawn were driven insane with hunger and targeted all organic life. These elders used their influence to still their spawns rampage and asked for the Green Scars aid to survive with him agreeing. This allowed him to arrive at Crown City unimpaired and a confrontation with the Red King who after an initial defeat intended to detonate the mantle in order to destroy the planet rather than lose. The Green Scar managed to stop the cataclysmic chain reaction and the Red King was seemingly killed by a Wildebot. With his death, the Green Scar was hailed as the saviour of Sakaar and declared its new ruler. (Incredible Hulk v2 #102) The shuttle that brought Hulk to Sakaar later suffered an overload to its warp creator causing it to detonate. This resulted in the death of hundreds of Sakaarans as the chain reaction damaged the mantle thus causing worldwide cataclysm killing many more around the world. The detonation also seemingly killed Caiera the Oldstrong who was the wife of the Hulk. This led to the Hulk vowing revenge against his former comrades in the Illuminati on Earth and had the Warbound prepare to wage war against his homeworld of Earth. (Incredible Hulk v2 #105)

With the Hulk gone, chaos erupted across Sakaar where thousands of murderous figures arose in order to claim the throne of the Red King. (Incredible Hulk v1 #709) The Son of Hulk then took the Imperian forces that followed the Red King into laying siege to the Fillian capital of It'Jam in an effort to kill Axeman Bone. The Imperial Sakaaran warlord decided to unleash the ancient dragons that once resided on the world in order to defeat his foe. (Skaar: Son of Hulk v1 #8) This battle only ended when the Hulk apparently emerged to put a sop to the infighting between the factions. (Skaar: Son of Hulk v1 #9) In reality, this was a construct constructed by the spirit of Caiera in an effort to stop further bloodshed and to humble her son. At this time, the World Devourer Galactus was heading towards Sakaar in order to consume its Old Power thus sating its hunger for a thousand years. Skaar, however, intended to oppose the cosmic being and was willing to sacrifice thousands to achieve that goal. Upon seeing her son's selfish actions, Caiera decided to banish him from the world and allowed Sakaar to be consumed by Galactus. (Skaar: Son of Hulk v1 #10) She came to use the last of her power to hold the World Devourer at bay long enough for a number of Sakaarans to flee on-board ancient stoneships where they became the only survivors of their world. (Skaar: Son of Hulk v1 #11) They came to fall under the leadership of Hiro-Kala who was recognised as the Sakaarson due to being the other son of Hulk and Caiera. Thus, he retained the Old Power allowing him to control the Shadow stone ship that took the last Sakaarans to a new world. He led them to Giausar that was formerly visited by the Shadow People but abandoned due to its savage native population. Upon arriving, the native species attempted to confiscate the stone ship but Hiro-Kala resisted their efforts. (Skaar: Son of Hulk v1 #13)

Return to Sakaar

Though destroyed, the re-emergence of the Time Stone came to restore the planet of Sakaar thus bringing it back into existence. (Incredible Hulk v1 #713) The rebuilt Sakaar fell under the reign of the bloodthirsty Warlord, who conquered over a hundred tribes and united them into a single dominant faction. He regularly forced slaves and minor clans to battle for survival in a barbaric trial known as the Gauntlet. The Doka'abi decided to send a call to the Hulk to help free their world. At this time, the Hulk's successor came to be Amadeus Cho who was isolating himself on a satellite after he was losing control of his Hulk persona. Whilst on the satellite, he received a distress signal and whilst investigating he was transported through a wormhole to the restored Sakaar. He crashed on the surface where people of the Doka'abi Clan attempted to get his aid to overthrow the Warlord that had dominated the planet. (Incredible Hulk v1 #709) The Hulk's intervention allowed the Doka'abi to become the first clan to make it past the first round of the Gauntlet. (Incredible Hulk v1 #710) For the fifth and final round, the Hulk confronted the Warlord himself. The tyrant was defeated, and then killed by the Doka'abi headman Chak while he was down. The Hulk left Sakaar after helping the Doka'abi build a fortified village to help rebuild civilization. (Incredible Hulk v1 #713)

In time, the Hulk's cousin, She-Hulk, joined them as well, but rather then fighting she helped negotiate peace. Despite their good intentions, over the following centuries, the Hulks' actions indirectly led to death of countless people and the destruction of several ecosystems. One thousand years later, the descendants of the Hulks, known as the Haarg, were seen as monsters and were unwelcome in Sakaar's society.
