Biography

Rei Hino (Japanese: 火野 レイ, Hepburn: Hino Rei)

On Earth, Rei was an only child and the daughter of Risa Hino and Takashi Hino, a famous politician. Her mother Risa fell ill and died, leaving a grieving Rei who began to despise her father for never visiting her mother once as she was dying in the hospital. Rei would soon move into Hikawa Shrine with her grandfather and work as a shrine priestess as well as befriending two crows named Phobos and Deimos. Rei would develop psychic powers that she would cultivate by diving through the Sacred Fire at the shrine. However, her abilities would cause people to view her as strange and avoid her. Once a year on her birthday, Rei would meet with her father and receive Casablanca lilies and a white dress for her to wear, gifts ostensibly picked out by him, but in reality, picked out by his secretary Kaido, whom Rei has a crush on. Because Kaido expressed a disinterest in getting married and having kids, Rei believed them to be kindred spirits. However, Rei eventually found out that her father wants Kaido to take over his position when he retires and insists that Kaido be married to maintain a good impression. Rei sees him being affectionate with another woman and learns that she was the daughter of another high-class politician from his circle of friends and co-workers. Many people believe she and Kaido would make the perfect couple. Rei was devastated by the news because she felt that Kaido understood her views on marriage, relationships, and love. Kaido claims that his marriage is only a political move decided by her father, but Rei calls him a liar and says that if Kaido truly wanted to use marriage as a way to gather power, he would have married Rei herself.

Later, Sailor Mars fought alongside the other Sailor Guardians when Jadeite unleashed a scheme to drain energy from unsuspecting humans at the airport. During the confrontation, Sailor Mars targeted Jadeite’s monsters with rapid Fire Soul blasts, burning through their energy-draining devices and forcing them back. When the monsters attempted to overwhelm Sailor Moon directly, Mars intercepted their advance by creating a wall of fire to block their approach. She also used her ofuda (Shinto paper charms) to paralyze one of the monsters temporarily, which gave Sailor Moon an opening to destroy it. Her bold attacks turned the tide of the battle, showcasing her as one of the team’s strongest offensive Guardians.

During a later confrontation with the Dark Kingdom, Sailor Mars directly engaged Zoisite’s youma minions. In this encounter, she fought with fiery precision, using her Fire Soul to eliminate multiple enemies while maneuvering to protect Sailor Moon. When Zoisite attempted to immobilize the Guardians with crystal shards, Mars drew upon her spiritual training, hurling a barrage of ofuda to counteract the magic and disrupt his control over the battlefield. She pressed the attack with concentrated bursts of flame, driving Zoisite back until he was forced to retreat. Mars’s aggressive combat style provided her team the breathing space they needed to recover and regroup.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Rei Hino was depicted as a tall, long-haired girl with striking black hair and violet eyes, wearing the traditional red-and-white shrine maiden robes of the Hikawa Shrine before transforming into Sailor Mars. As Sailor Mars, her uniform consisted of a white leotard with a red skirt, high heels, and a red bow, accented with a purple bow on her chest. The look was completed with white gloves, a red choker, and her tiara featuring a red gem. Her appearance emphasized her fiery theme, tying her spiritual background with her powers as a Guardian.

Rei was depicted as fiery, confident, and headstrong, often clashing with Usagi due to her blunt and outspoken nature. She was ambitious, disciplined, and serious, traits stemming from her shrine maiden duties and psychic sensitivity. While sometimes sharp-tongued, she showed deep loyalty to her friends and carried a strong sense of responsibility as a Sailor Guardian. Rei also possessed a spiritual awareness that made her highly attuned to supernatural threats, often providing the team with early warnings of incoming danger.

Rei disliked modern romantic relationships and resents men. She has an old fashioned way of thinking, and is very traditional. She remains stoic and serious, making her a rather mysterious character. Due to the lack of male role models in her life and her resentment towards her father, she does not rely on men and is uninterested in ever getting into a romantic relationship. Despite her seriousness, she is extremely loyal to Usagi and her fellow Sailor Guardians, and cares a lot about the ones who are close to her.

On Eath, she was born the only child of Risa Hino and Takashi Hino, a famous politician.

Powers and abilities

In her case, she wielded the Mars Crystal (マルス クリスタル, Māzu Kurisutaru) that allowed her transformation into Sailor Mars.

Sailor Mars wielded powers centered around fire and spiritual purification. Her signature Fire Soul attack unleashed concentrated fireballs capable of incinerating enemies, while she could also create walls or bursts of flame for both offense and defense. As a shrine maiden, she utilized ofuda charms imbued with spiritual energy, effective at sealing, paralyzing, or repelling evil forces. In addition, Rei possessed psychic abilities, including precognition and spirit sensing, which provided her and the team with valuable insight against their enemies. Her blend of elemental firepower and spiritual purification made her one of the team’s most formidable combatants.

  • Sailor Mars was created by Naoko Takeuchi where she featured in the setting of the Sailor Moon universe.
  • The Martian Manhunter once took on the identity of a Japanese woman named Rei Hino though as revealed on CBR writer Mark Millar stated that this was a coincidence and that this was not an intentional Sailor Mars reference.
