Biography
Ruby Summers was the daughter of Cyclops and Emma Frost from an alternate future timeline designated as Earth-1191 in the Multiverse.
Ruby has been living in the ruins of Atlantic City with her father, Scott Summers for decades. Ruby alongside Dwayne eventually came into contact with the time-stranded Layla Miller and took her to her father, the cybernetically enhanced and considerably aged Cyclops. Scott Summers revealed that he had been waiting to see Layla for decades. Layla convinced Ruby to follow the dream of the X-Men and fight for the freedom of mutantkind. After a conversation with Cyclops, Layla convinces Ruby to meet up with a new mutant named Linqon. Ruby journeyed to New York City and along with her friends, Dwayne and Linqon, began the Summers Rebellion. Ruby was joined by pro-mutant humans and fought the oppression of mutants by humans. (X-Factor Special: Layla Miller v1 #1)
Years after the start of the rebellion, Ruby rescued the now-aged Layla and Jamie Madrox, whom Layla had just brought into the future from the past, from a Sentinel attack. (X-Factor v3 #41) She was not pleased to find out Layla disobeyed her in bringing Madrox to the future. (X-Factor v3 #42)
She later brought Scott and Layla to an old, broken down hotel where an elderly, fragile Doctor Doom currently resided. They question him about time travel when they are attacked by Sentinels, only to be saved by Trevor Fitzroy. (X-Factor v3 #46)
However, during a showdown between the Summers Rebels and Sentinels, Doctor Doom turned on them and began manipulating Cyclops via his cybernetic prosthesis. During the ensuing battle, Cortex arrived and killed Fitzroy. Despite Layla's warning, Ruby convinced her to resurrect Fitzroy, knowing that Fitzroy would be resurrected without a soul. The team was narrowly able to defeat Anthony Falcone, Cortex, and the Sentinels with Fitzroy's help, while both Layla and Madrox were returned to their own time. (X-Factor v3 #50)
Overview
Personality and attributes
Ruby tended to stay in her ruby form indefinitely because of fear of accelerated aging. This was because if she reverted back to flesh then she assumed all the years she spent in crystal semblance would come back at her all at once. Despite seemingly appearing to be young of age, Ruby is in fact more than 70. She has survived without aging by staying in her Ruby Form for a long time. She herself has confessed that she does not know if she will stay young if she leaves her Ruby form or instantly age. (X-Factor Special: Layla Miller v1 #1)
Over time, she came to develop a close sister-like friendship with Layla Miller. (X-Factor v1 #44)
Powers and abilities
Like her mother, she was capable of turning her skin into a ruby form similar to her mother's organic diamond form. This transformation can be maintained indefinitely, and prevents visible aging. In this form, she can survive without sustenance. Because her transformation can be maintained indefinitely, she requires no sustenance and prevents visible aging, Ruby can theoretically live forever. Ruby is chronologically in her 80s, but appears physiologically in her mid-20s because she has remained in her ruby form for decades. (X-Factor Special: Layla Miller v1 #1)
Similar to her father, Ruby can produce and project powerful beams of concussive energy. Unlike her father, Ruby's beams are black in color and she has conscious control over her powers meaning she does not require a visor. (X-Factor Special: Layla Miller v1 #1)
Notes
- Ruby Summers was created by Peter David and Valentine De Landro where she made her first appearance in X-Factor: Layla Miller v1 #1 (August, 2008).
Alternate Versions
- In Future Imperfect v1 #1 (2015), an alternate version of Ruby Summers appeared in the Dystopia reality designated as Earth-69413 on Battleworld. Ruby Summers was a member of the Rebels group led by the Thing who fought against the tyranny of Dystopia's Baron Maestro. Ruby had a habit of going on solo outings without anyone else which led to her coming across an old man in the desert claiming to be the fallen Asgardian leader Odin. Being the kind-hearted person she was , she brought him to the rebel hideout in order for him to rest up and heal. After arriving, 'Odin' wanted to meet the leader of the resistance so Ruby brought him to see the Thing, but this was a setup as Odin was really the Maestro in disguise. He attacked the rebels while Ruby fired her optic blasts in hopes to stop Maestro in his tracks but it wasn't good enough. The Maestro ended the battle quickly, and dragged the Thing back to his kingdom. After the evacuation, Janis and Skooter went to look for Ruby to attempt to rescue their leader. They came across one of the Maestro's guards, Layla Miller who they thought captured Summers but really saved her instead. She told Ruby that she also opposed the dictator. Ruby allowed Layla to help them sneak into the Baron's palace
