Biography

Zaar in The Man of Steel v2 #3.

Rogol Zaar

Thus, he came to be the last member of his race who was full of rage that made him a perfect recruit for the Circle. This was a group consisting of key figures of various worlds whose ranks included Appa Ali Apsa of Oa, Sardath of Rann, the Thanagarian Defence Minister, King Myand'r of Tamaran and Empress Gandelo of the Fourteen Suns. They were a secret and powerful union where Ganeldo wanted to be proactive in the elimination of worlds that were a threat to the universe. In Rogol Zaar, they came to find an agent to act on their behalf though he came to be defiant and unpredictable. (Supergirl v7 #29)

Many years ago, he came to assist the Thanagarians during a skirmish against Tamaranean forces over planet Planet 497. Zaar's mere presence was enough to have King Myand'r to issue a retreat. (Superman v5 #2)

Meeting the Circle, he swore vengeance against Krypton for destroying his world where he met with Gandelo in secret where she offered him the chance to achieve his goal. In exchange for his devotion to her cause, Rogol Zaar was provided a device stolen and reverse engineered from Zor-El that was to be used to destroy the planet. (Supergirl v7 #29)

He later went to a bar located in the far end of the Vega System where he had a drink when he noticed a relic tied to a figure called Superman. From this, he came to learn that a single survivor of Krypton existed on the planet Earth and headed to that world. Long after Krypton’s demise, Rogol Zaar emerged from exile, driven by a renewed sense of vengeance against the last remnants of the Kryptonian race. He arrived on Earth after tracing Kal-El’s presence and immediately launched a violent assault on Metropolis. His first encounter with Superman was marked by extreme aggression and a singular obsession with eradicating all Kryptonian legacy, claiming that the House of El represented everything corrupt about Krypton’s past. In battle, Zaar displayed immense physical power, capable of matching Superman blow for blow and causing widespread devastation throughout the city. His attacks drew in Supergirl and other heroes, forcing them into a brutal confrontation that exposed both his might and his fanatical hatred. Though Superman ultimately managed to drive him off, Zaar’s message left a lasting mark—he viewed himself as the true instrument of Krypton’s destruction, the living embodiment of its punishment. (The Man of Steel v2 #2)

Taking Zaar into orbit, Superman fought the alien with their fight leading them to the Moon. Despite his anger, the Man of Steel came to be defeat by Rogol Zaar who left the injured Kryptonian unconscious as he made his way back to Earth to continue his revenge. (The Man of Steel v2 #5)

Trapped within the Zone, he would encounter another fallen legacy of the House of El with this being the Nuclear Man. The two battled with Rogol Zaar killing his opponent whereupon he plotted for a means to return to the material universe to continue his quest for revenge. For such a task, he decided that he needed to gather an army to aid him. (Superman v5 #2) He began by starting a fire within the Phantom Zone that came to attract one of the denizens there which was the exiled Kryptonian criminal Jax-Ur. Zaar would reveal that Earth had been pulled into the Phantom Zone whereupon Jax-Ur had dispatched his allies to attack and kill Rogol. However, Zaar ended up subduing his attackers rather than killing them as he wanted to recruit them into his army. He then forged an alliance with Jax-Ur where the two would work together to escape the Phantom Zone and get their revenge on the House of El. Their plan involved going to Earth to take the Phantom Zone Projector in order to free themselves. (Superman v5 #3) Arriving at the head of his army, they arrived on Earth where they were confronted by Superman leading to another battle against the son of Jor-El. (Superman v5 #4)

Captured, he was kept in a containment cell as the United Planets was formed bringing a new era for the cosmos. (Superman v5 #15)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Vendetta against the House of El in Superman v5 #11.

In appearance, Rogol Zaar was a towering, heavily muscled humanoid alien with rough, scarred skin and sharp, angular facial features that suggested both age and violence. His skin bore markings and scars resembling tribal carvings, possibly ritualistic or trophies of battle. His hair was long and wild, often matted from warfare, and his eyes glowed with a burning orange hue that conveyed constant fury. He wore segmented alien armor made of an unknown alloy, decorated with trophies from fallen foes and symbols of conquest. His primary weapon was a massive energy-imbued axe, forged to channel destructive force on a scale capable of leveling cities. (The Man of Steel v2 #1)

Rogol Zaar embodied rage, discipline, and religious fanaticism intertwined. He viewed his crusade against Krypton and its descendants as an act of divine or cosmic justice rather than malice. To Zaar, destruction was purification—his role in the universe was to 'cleanse' it of civilizations that grew too ambitious or arrogant. Despite his savagery, he possessed a strategic and tactical intelligence that allowed him to manipulate powerful beings and survive across millennia of warfare. He exhibited contempt for compassion, viewing mercy as weakness, yet his hatred of Krypton carried a perverse sense of duty rather than personal hatred for any individual Kryptonian. His demeanor oscillated between calm, sermon-like speeches and uncontrollable bouts of violence, demonstrating both his ideological conviction and the psychological toll of his long crusade. (Superman v5 #13)

It was said that he was a warmonger who was full of hate. (Supergirl v7 #29)

He was shown to be quite calculated with him committing acts that did maximum emotional damage to his foes. An example of this trait was when Zaar desecrated the Fortress of Solitude and stole the Bottle City of Kandor, a sacred and painful relic of Krypton. By doing so, he showed his understanding of how to inflict maximum emotional damage on Superman. Furthermore, his actions showed that he was willing to use threats against civilians and manipulate the emotions of his enemies to achieve his goals, rather than simply relying on brute force. This intellectual cruelty, combined with his immense physical power, made him a particularly formidable and terrifying foe. (The Man of Steel v2 #3)

Over time, he came to be regarded as a legendary creature of war who had bathed in the blood of millions of souls to fight for what he believed in. (The Man of Steel v2 #2)

Zaar was preferred to die a warrior's death with this being preferable to imprisonment. (Superman v5 #2)

He came to find an ally in Empress Gandelo where he swore to follow her anywhere as she had helped him in his goals. (Supergirl v7 #29)

Powers and abilities

Fighting an empowered Kryptonian in Superman v5 #3.

Rogol Zaar was not a human being and thus possessed physical and biological attributes far beyond terrestrial limitations. His alien physiology granted him immense superhuman strength, durability, and endurance, placing him on a level comparable to Kryptonians under a yellow sun. He was capable of surviving in the vacuum of space, enduring extreme temperatures, and withstanding direct blows from Superman and Supergirl without significant injury. His combat skills were the product of centuries of warfare across multiple civilizations, making him a master of armed and unarmed combat. Zaar wielded his massive axe with lethal precision, and the weapon itself appeared to channel energy capable of devastating planetary structures. Although he had no known energy projection powers of his own, his sheer physicality, tactical experience, and relentless aggression rendered him one of the most formidable physical opponents Superman had ever faced. (The Man of Steel v2 #3)

One of his incredible feats of raw might included landing blows on Superman with enough force to generate city-leveling shockwaves and send the Kryptonian flying from Earth's orbit all the way to the Moon. (The Man of Steel v2 #5) In another instance, he was shown to had effortlessly overpowered and bloodied General Zod. (Superman v5 #6) Zaar also demonstrated his brute strength and durability during his fight against Superman near Earth's molten core, where the intense heat did not hinder his ability to continue his rampage. (The Man of Steel v2 #5)

It was said that he had sworn an oath to serve and protect the galactic Circle until he betrayed them. (The Man of Steel v2 #2)
