Biography

Original

Robert Berresford

He was in fact descended from a primitive woodland tribe that lived thousands of years ago in what is now the Northeastern United States. He left home after he began to develop his mutation, and injured a fellow student during a martial arts training session. Ripclaw questioned his father over his hands, and his father became evasive, and became enraged when Ripclaw pressed on with his questions, asking his father about why his skin was much paler than that of other students. He left home, seeking answers, and ended up on an American Indian reservation, where he stumbled into a fight and was knocked unconscious. He was found by a powerful shaman, who taught him about his ancestors.

They went through a ceremony where Ripclaw experienced a joining and conversing with the spirits of his ancestors and the spirits of the land, who told him that he was Robert Bearclaw, and not Robert Berresford, as his father had always told him. The spirits told him that he was to be their warrior and that he was to lead the Indian People back to the greatness of spirit that they once had. When he finished the ceremony, involving tribal flesh hooks and war paint, the shaman marked him with his blood, and this became the red markings over his skin, reminding him always of the pain and truth of the ceremony that he had been through. He was raised primarily by the shaman after that, who taught him how to use his special talents.

As a young man, he entered military service and was later recruited into a secret government program promising to enhance soldiers through experimental cybernetic augmentation. The program’s true intent, however, was to strip subjects of their humanity and mold them into living weapons. Robert underwent extensive surgical reconstruction — his skeleton reinforced with biomechanical alloys and his hands replaced with retractable cybernetic claws capable of slicing through steel. When the experiments ended, what remained of Robert Bearclaw was a hybrid of man and machine, struggling to reconcile his human soul with the predator that had been engineered into him. Ripclaw’s early years after his transformation were defined by isolation and rage. Haunted by fragmented memories of his past and plagued by a near-feral bloodlust, he wandered the world seeking both vengeance and redemption. His encounters with the sinister corporation Cyberdata — the architects behind his augmentation — eventually brought him into contact with other cybernetically enhanced fugitives, among them Velocity, Heatwave, and Impact. Together they formed Cyber Force, a group dedicated to dismantling Cyberdata’s operations and liberating others who had been enslaved by its technological manipulations. Ripclaw’s role within the team was that of a front-line combatant and spiritual anchor, balancing his deadly efficiency with a deep reverence for the warrior traditions of his ancestors. His devotion to his heritage often clashed with his internal torment, as he feared that his spiritual essence had been corrupted beyond recovery by the machine within. (Cyber Force v2 #1)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Throughout his time with Cyber Force, Ripclaw emerged as both a protector and a seeker of truth. He fought tirelessly against Cyberdata’s cyborg enforcers and its elite special units, often leading missions into enemy strongholds and surviving encounters that would kill ordinary soldiers. Despite his violent exterior, he demonstrated compassion and loyalty toward his teammates, particularly Velocity, whom he regarded as a younger sister. His introspective nature and meditative practices often placed him at odds with the team’s more pragmatic members. (Cyber Force v2 #3)

Powers and abilities

Ripclaw is also able to enter another plane of existence -- one that he interprets as being a world in which spirits dwell. It is not known how he is able to accomplish this, but it seems to involve some sort of heightened sensitivity which allows him to sense things just beyond the physical boundaries that define what we know as reality.

Notes

  • Ripclaw was created by Marc Silvestri where he made his first appearance in Cyberforce v1 #1 (October, 1992).
