Biography

Rick Tyler in Infinity Inc. v1 #21.

Rick Tyler

After spending time traveling abroad, Rick returned home just as a cataclysmic, reality-threatening crisis began to tear through the cosmos. When a localized disaster struck his immediate surroundings, Rick was forced to act, recklessly swallowing a capsule of Miraclo that was his father's highly addictive, strength-enhancing chemical supplement to protect an injured civilian woman named Beth Chapel from falling debris. The biochemical compound successfully triggered an immediate surge of superhuman power within his system, allowing him to pull her to safety and survive the destruction. Recognizing that his father had been incapacitated and captured by hostile forces during the cosmic emergency, Rick resolved to honor his family's legacy by stepping directly into the conflict, officially assuming the mantle of the new Hourman to aid a team of next-generation heroes in the ongoing battle. (Infinity Inc. v1 #20)

A young Rick during his childhood wanted his father to spent time with him but Rex Tyler was often busy with other matters and could not devote time to being with his son. (JSA v1 #65)

He was on a trip travelling across Europe when he headed back home where his father had had hoped to steer him into a medical career. (Infinity Inc. v1 #20)

Remaining within the Timepoint, the critically wounded Rick lay dying within the frozen moment in time. This was until his father Rex had assembled a team that included Jay Garrick, Michael Holt, Pieter Cross and the Hourman android. They journeyed into the Timepoint using the android Hourman's timeship where they performed surgery to repair the injuries to his body. Upon regaining consciousness, Rick was determined to let his father live and decided to take his place in history in the battle against Extant as Hourman was destined to die in the fight. Overview

Personality and attributes

Rick Tyler and his father Rex in JSA v1 #38.

In appearance, Rick Tyler was a young Caucasian male with a lean, athletic build, short blonde hair, and clean-shaven, youthful facial features. Prior to his transformation, he dressed in standard mid-1980s civilian attire, opting for a simple, light-coloured casual shirt and dark trousers. Upon taking up his father's heroic legacy, he donned a complete superhero uniform heavily inspired by the original Hourman design, featuring a vibrant yellow bodysuit that fit tightly to his athletic frame. The costume was contrasted by a dark black cowl that completely covered his head and face, leaving only his eyes visible, and a matching black cape attached to his shoulders that draped down his back. A distinctive, red hourglass emblem was stamped directly onto the center of his chest, serving as a prominent visual marker of his time-limited abilities, while heavy black boots and matching gloves covered his extremities to complete his costumed silhouette. Powers and abilities

The new Hourman in JSA v1 #79.

Rick Tyler possessed standard human physical capabilities that were drastically augmented by the ingestion of the synthetic chemical compound known as Miraclo. Upon swallowing a single pill, his body experienced an immediate, artificial enhancement that granted him immense superhuman strength, allowing him to lift massive chunks of structural debris and shatter solid stone barriers with ease. This chemical reaction also enhanced his physical speed, reflexes, and overall durability, enabling him to withstand intense blunt-force impacts and environmental hazards that would easily prove fatal to an ordinary man. However, these augmented physical attributes were strictly bound by a chronological limitation, operating at peak efficiency for a precise duration of exactly sixty minutes before the drug safely wore off and returned his body to its baseline human state. Notes

  • Rick Tyler was created by Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas and Todd McFarlane where he made his first appearance in Infinity Inc. v1 #20 (November, 1985).
