History

Origin

Rheelasia functioned as a sovereign Southeast Asian island nation that became a primary site for international espionage and specialized tactical operations involving the retrieval of high-value intelligence. In its earliest actions, the country's territory was used as a sanctuary for various illegal operations and political dissidents, which led to a state of civil unrest and the subsequent intervention of foreign operatives. These activities involved the deployment of local security forces and the use of specialized surveillance technology to monitor the movement of outsiders within the nation's dense urban sectors and coastal regions. The Rheelasian government, operating under a system of strict internal controls, attempted to manage a crisis involving the theft of a critical experimental computer virus. The military actions on the island were characterized by the use of unconventional infiltration techniques, as foreign agents navigated the country's multi-layered cities and industrial facilities to neutralize threats to global digital security. These initial operations focused on the surgical extraction of personnel and the prevention of a large-scale data breach that could have destabilized international financial markets. The environment was marked by the presence of high-tech security arrays and a population living under the pressure of escalating regional tensions, reflecting the nation's role as a strategic flashpoint in the modern digital age. (Birds of Prey: Black Canary/Oracle v1 #1)

At the Republic of Rheelasia, Generalissimo and President Singh Manh Lee uncovered natural gas reserves which they intended to power thousands of homes across the country. However, an explosion erupts that killed five thousand people with ten thousand more injured. Initially, no terrorist organizations took responsibility for the incident but eventually the Green Brotherhood claimed their part in the incident. (Birds of Prey: Black Canary/Oracle v1 #1)

Black Canary discovered during her infiltration, these jungles concealed compounds built into the rockface—complete with commanding guard patrols and booby-trapped perimeters—a testament to how easily the island had been repurposed for illicit activity. (Birds of Prey v1 #1)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new history of events was created with a different timeline of events. The country of Rheelasia was noted for being crime infested with drug dealers and gun smugglers dominating the area until Kaizen Gamorra took over where he turned it into one of the fast growing economies of the world that had been renamed as New Gamorra. In that time, it was noted for being the fourth biggest economy in Asia but was developed entirely by Kaizen Gamorra without reliance on outside investment. (Batman/Superman v1 #8) Since resettlement, the Gamorrans had kept information tight on their society. (Worlds' Finest v1 #20)

Overview

In appearance, Rheelasia was a small, tropical island nation located somewhere in Southeast Asia, defined by dense jungles, coastal cliffs, and a humid climate—its shores lapped by warm, azure waters and ringed with rugged coral reefs (Birds of Prey #1). The country’s infrastructure was sparse outside its capital region, with a handful of weathered military installations, port facilities, and private estates carved out of the terrain. (Birds of Prey v1 #1)

Rheelasia was a sovereign Southeast Asian nation that functioned as a tropical, highly urbanised island territory defined by its strategic coastal positioning and dense metropolitan infrastructure. The habitat consisted of a humid, equatorial environment with lush coastal vegetation and rugged interiors that provided a natural backdrop to its rapidly expanding urban landscape, which was dominated by a singular, high-density capital city. Development of the nation showed a transition toward a high-tech industrial hub, with the cityscape featuring a blend of traditional eastern architecture and modern, glass-and-steel skyscrapers designed to facilitate international trade and digital commerce. The landscape was marked by the presence of massive port facilities, sophisticated data centers, and advanced manufacturing plants that reflected the country’s growing role in the global technology sector. Notable features of the country included its extreme population density and the pervasive integration of digital surveillance networks into its public infrastructure, which served to monitor both the citizenry and foreign visitors. The environment was defined by a state of constant industrial activity and the presence of high-security zones, where the nation's traditional heritage was increasingly being replaced by the requirements of a modern, tech-driven economy. (Birds of Prey: Black Canary/Oracle v1 #1)

Rheelasia's environment served as both sanctuary and trap. Its thick tropical forests provided cover for fugitives and guerrilla fighters, while steep cliffs and dense undergrowth created natural chokepoints that complicated any security sweep. (Birds of Prey v1 #1)

The culture and civilisation of Rheelasia were defined by a state of intense political polarization and a society functioning under the pressure of a nation divided into two distinct ideological halves. The population resided in an environment where ancient eastern traditions were increasingly influenced by modern technological expansion and the requirements of a high-security state. The government operated as a complex administrative system split between a northern and southern authority, each maintaining a centralized and rigid hierarchy to enforce its specific political doctrine. This administrative structure prioritised national security and the protection of its burgeoning technological infrastructure, utilizing a formal chain of command to manage the country's dense urban centers and digital assets. The military was a robust and highly active force, consisting of conventional infantry, specialized border guards, and elite security units equipped with advanced surveillance and communication technology. They possessed the logistical capability to maintain fortified checkpoints and high-tech industrial zones, conducting operations to monitor internal dissent and prevent foreign espionage. The military and government worked in tandem to project an image of national strength while aggressively managing the high-stakes digital and economic interests that made the island a regional power. This civilizational structure was characterised by its focus on industrial competitiveness and the maintenance of a heavily monitored social order, where the daily life of the citizenry was defined by the ongoing struggle for dominance between the nation's competing political factions. (Birds of Prey: Black Canary/Oracle v1 #1)

In the wake of its previous ruler’s death, central authority had collapsed, and the island had become a haven for criminals—including drug lords, mercenaries, and warlords—who maintained private compounds and used the island as a base for international operations. Its capital region was crisscrossed by jungle trails and guard checkpoints, all overseen by private security forces loyal to the most powerful criminal bosses, giving the entire country an air of lawlessness and hidden danger. In other media

Television

  • In Young Justice, Rhelasia appeared in the setting of the animated television series where it made its first full appearance in he episode "Targets". It was revealed that the country was founded in 1855 where it was ruled by the Bokun Dynasty until it was divided into North and South Rhelasia after World War II by the great powers. The two sides were engaged in hostilities with one another and refused most peace overtures made by the other side as they refused any form of unification between the nations. LexCorp was noted to had sold weapons to both sides but this ended when Lex Luthor sponsored a peace talk in Taipei to bring an end to the fighting. When Roy Harper confronted Luthor about his previous weapon sales, Lex replied that it was more profitable to help in the re-development of a country than simple armament sales. The peace talks were seemingly opposed by the League of Assassins who sent agents to target Luthor but ultimately this was believed to be a ruse made by the Light. It was later revealed that Rheelasia suffered from a tsunami that caused devastating damage to the countries with the Justice League being unable to intervene on a humanitarian basis due to restrictions placed on it by the United Nations. In the aftermath, a United Rheelasia was formed with its representative to the United Nation's being ambassador Kaizen Gamorra.
