History
The Raven Consort (烏妃, U'hi?) was a position that was held by a woman within the nation of Shou. Its origins lay with the goddess Wulian Niangniang who according to ancient mythology she was born from a primordial bubble and was the younger sister of the Owl, a god who oversaw the spirit realm. She was eventually exiled to Shou after she committed a divine transgression by reviving a human soul, an act that violated her sacred duty as a guide for the dead. In her true physical manifestation, she appeared as a formidable four-winged black bird with a pig's torso, lizard feet, and the stunning face of a woman adorned in gold. Arriving in the land of Shou, she came to notice humans and decided to influence their society. This saw a system of dual sovereignty being created that functioned harmoniously for five hundred years. In this time, the land was governed by both a Summer King, who handled political affairs, and a Winter King, a shamaness who served the goddess Wulian Niangniang. This balance was shattered centuries prior when the Summer King murdered the Winter King, an act of violence that led to divine silence and nearly a millennium of national ruin. The role was eventually resurrected during the reign of Ran Yuu, who ascended the throne alongside Koushou, the first woman chosen by the goddess as the new Winter King. To prevent future conflict and secure his reign, Ran Yuu systematically erased the true history of the Winter King, stripping Koushou of her sovereign status and rebranding her as the Raven Consort to disguise her as a mere imperial concubine. Although she held the title of a consort, she occupied a solitary and mystical position within the Ye Ming Palace, exempt from typical imperial duties and forbidden from kneeling before the Emperor. This transition fundamentally transformed the position into a gilded imprisonment; because Koushou chose to remain with Ran Yuu, the goddess was tethered within her body and the bodies of all her successors, physically binding every Raven Consort to the palace grounds to serve as a medium for the dead and a keeper of forbidden 'mysterious arts'.
