History
The Rann-Thanagar War was a conflict that erupted between the interstellar civilisations of the planet Rann and Thanagar.
Adam interrogated an alien bounty hunter, asking him how he acquired Zeta-Beam technology and what does he know of the Rann Supernova. The alien doesn't have time to answer as his suit goes critical and he explodes. Before the explosion however, Adam is able to confiscate the Zeta-Beamer from the alien's war suit. Using the bounty hunter's Zeta-Beamer, Adam teleports to the Alpha Centauri system. He reappears in the wake of the supernova and the heat immediately begins to play havoc with his sensors. Analyzing the debris surrounding the supernova, he begins to suspect that somebody or something may have Zeta-Beamed the entire planet of Rann to another location. His wife and child may still be alive. (Adam Strange v2 #2)
Adam Strange fought a rogue group of Thanagarians. During the battle, the leader of the group transported Strange's adopted homeworld of Rann into the Thanagarian system in the hope of creating a dictatorship. However, Rann's new location caused the orbit of Thanagar to become unstable, and the planet crashed into the system's sun. The surviving Thanagarians and Rannians now all live on Rann, and tensions are high between the two groups, as each blames the other for their predicament. Aware that war could erupt at any time, Strange goes to Earth to recruit the help of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, who are from Thanagar, in preventing a war. Meanwhile, Kyle Rayner and Captain Comet go to Thanagar to investigate, finding Onimar Synn and engaging in a battle, with Synn escaping through a drop ship. They then find hundreds of bodies buried underground, supplying Onimar Synn with energy, where Kilowog shows up. Later, Kilowog and Rayner terraform Thanagar back to life and save the underground bodies. When Strange and the Hawks arrive on Rann, they are shocked to see that the war has already begun. They form a team, including the Thanagarian Hawkwoman and the Tamaranean Blackfire. More and more planets are drawn into the war as Rann and Thanagar each call on their respective allies. Seeing a chance to seize power, Blackfire betrays the group, killing Hawkwoman in the process. It becomes clear that all factions have a common enemy: Synn. With the help of Tigorr of the Omega Men and Captain Comet, Strange's team manages to cut Synn into seven pieces, and each piece was inserted into a separate star to prevent him from reforming.
Overview
In appearance, the Rann-Thanagar War was an interstellar conflict that erupted between the worlds of Rann and Thanagar.
The war originated in the Polaris system, where territorial disputes escalated into orbital bombardments and planetary invasions. Entire fleets engaged in layered battles across multiple spheres of conflict, from Rann’s manipulated terrain and atmospheric installations to Thanagar’s devastated biosphere, still reeling from prior cataclysms. Both sides viewed the other as aggressors: Rannians accused the Thanagarians of expansionism and vengeance, while Thanagarians viewed the Rannian planetary intrusion as a deliberate act of colonization. Political manipulation by third-party factions, such as the influence of Komand’r and the manipulation of cosmic forces, further fueled the chaos, making diplomacy impossible. The war expanded to neighboring systems and drew in other galactic powers, with alliances fracturing and neutral worlds choosing sides out of fear or necessity. (Rann-Thanagar War v1 #1)
The scale of destruction during the Rann-Thanagar War was immense. Whole biospheres were lost, orbital defense platforms were shattered, and millions perished as collateral damage to planet-spanning assaults. Interstellar refugee crises plagued nearby star systems, with displaced populations fleeing the escalating warzones. Energy-based weapons tore through atmospheres and devastated planetary crusts, while artificial wormholes and teleporter gates were used to launch surprise assaults deep into enemy territory. Sacred sites of both civilizations were desecrated, including Rann’s ancient Zaredian spires and Thanagar’s revered Halls of Honor. The conflict deeply strained both societies, not just militarily but culturally, with propaganda fueling hatred and generations of distrust. The war eventually reached a tipping point when external cosmic threats, particularly involving the rift in spacetime and the manipulation of Hawkman’s legacy, forced a temporary ceasefire. Though open conflict ended, the hostilities left lasting scars on both civilizations and seeded future instability in the region. (Rann-Thanagar War v1 #1)

Films
- In Green Lantern: Beware My Power, the Rann-Thanagar War appeared in the setting of the animated film. At some point, the Rann-Thanagarian war started, leading to many casualties on both sides. Among those were the Rannians that died when Thanagarians Thanagarian missiles attacked one of Rann's cities. Among these was Alanna Strange, wife of Adam Strange, the Rannian hero who disappeared shortly after. After a peace treaty, the Rannians and Thanagarians tried to symbolize their new alliance by creating a Zeta-Beam connection between Rann and Thanagar, though this experiment, which was supervised by scientists Sardath and Banth Dar was sabotaged by the rogue Yellow Lantern Thaal Sinestro, which lead to a new war and bloodshed once again. As a means to end this war, Rannian scientist Sardath tried to modify the Zeta Beam technology into a mass destruction weapon, which they wanted to use to send Thanagar into a supernova. Adam Strange, long lost war hero of Rann, returned and informed the Rannians that they and the Thanagarians both had been played. After a final encounter with Sinestro and his master, the now corrupted Hal Jordan, which led to the death of lead scientist on the project Sardath, peace was once again established and Rann and Thangara were saved by Adam Strange, who sacrificed himself, by flying in front of the Zeta-Beam, being teleported into the supernova himself, instead of both planets.
