Biography

Marshall Evan Stone III

In the rain-slicked streets of Manhattan, the shapeshifting bounty hunter known as Random made his presence felt while tracking a group of genetically engineered escapees from the Genetics Council. Displaying a cynical and mercenary attitude, he cornered his targets—the X-Patriots—and engaged them in a destructive skirmish, during which he showcased his unique mutant ability to counter any superhuman power directed at him. When confronted by the government-sponsored team X-Factor, Random remained entirely unfazed by their authority, opting to taunt them while physically adapting his body to withstand Havok's plasma blasts and Strong Guy's kinetic strikes. He demonstrated a versatile combat style, morphing his forearms into high-caliber organic cannons to return fire with lethal efficiency. Throughout the encounter, Random prioritised his financial contract over any ideological or hero-based loyalty, proving himself a formidable opponent by holding the entire team at bay. The conflict eventually de-escalated not through physical defeat, but through a cold business negotiation; after Forge offered to pay him double his current bounty to walk away, Random casually accepted the bribe and stood down. He departed the scene with a smug sense of professional satisfaction, leaving the heroes frustrated by his raw power and his complete lack of moral alignment. (X-Factor v1 #88) In the sterile, high-tech environment of Forge’s headquarters, the mercenary Random reappeared not as an enemy, but as a reluctant and abrasive consultant. Having been summoned to assist X-Factor in tracking down the rogue X-Patriots—the very mutants he had previously been hired to capture—he immediately clashed with the team's dynamics, specifically grating against the authority of Havok and the skepticism of Wolfsbane. Despite the tension, Random demonstrated his value as a professional tracker, utilizing his street-level underworld connections to lead the team to a hidden warehouse in the city. During the ensuing confrontation with the fleeing mutants, he once again displayed his protoplasmic versatility, morphing his hands into heavy weaponry to suppress the opposition while maintaining a callous, profit-driven commentary on the mission. He showed no personal interest in the political plight of the refugees, focusing solely on the tactical execution of the job at hand. However, the mission took an unexpected turn when the team discovered that the Genetics Council had sent more than just bounty hunters to reclaim their property, forcing Random to fight alongside Strong Guy in a display of begrudging teamwork. Though he remained a wild card with no interest in the team's 'heroic' ideals, he fulfilled his end of the bargain with Forge, proving that his loyalty could be bought, even if his respect could not. (X-Factor v1 #80)
