Biography
Proty was the name given to a member of the legendary Protean beasts of Antares where he existed in the 30th century. (Adventure Comics v1 #308)
A criminal gang of three-headed inhabitants of Hydra World were smuggling animals from various planets that included Proty with them being apprehended by the Legion of Super-Heroes. After rescuing the beasts, Chameleon Boy encountered the Protean and adopted him as a pet where he was given the name Proty. He then accompanied the Legionnaires as they were tracking down the hidden Thieves World in order to shut down the criminal organization that operated on that planet. The initial actions of Proty were recorded when the Legion of Super-Heroes intercepted and dismantled an illicit interstellar smuggling syndicate, leading Chameleon Boy to find and adopt the unique creature as a personal pet. Almost immediately following this adoption, the entity routinely accompanied the team on their daily rotation of tactical operations. During these consecutive security missions, the creature closely observed a newly returned operative who claimed to be the recently deceased team founder, Lightning Lad. Utilizing its natural perceptive faculties during these field assignments, the entity began to share growing suspicions with the rest of the active Legionnaires that the resurrected hero's true identity was highly questionable. The creature then directly participated in a decisive confrontation that successfully neutralised a group of hostile alien criminals. Immediately following the apprehension of these extraterrestrial combatants, the entity stood alongside the gathered team as they uncovered the truth, establishing that the individual operating under the guise of their fallen comrade was actually his twin sister, who had hidden her brother's physical form on a remote world in a desperate bid to preserve his legacy. The Legion of Super-Heroes later organized a massive interstellar search operation to find a viable method of reviving their deceased comrade, Lightning Lad. When Mon-El determined that a specialized revitalization machine could channel an atmospheric lightning strike to restore the fallen hero's biological functions at the cost of another living being's life force, the creature closely monitored the team's ethical preparations. Recognizing that Saturn Girl intended to secretly manipulate the choice of target to sacrifice her own life for her teammate, the entity took preemptive, deceptive action. Utilizing its natural, fluid shapeshifting capabilities, the creature seamlessly mimicked Saturn Girl's physical structure and exact likeness. Operating under this perfect humanoid guise, the creature successfully deceived the remaining Legionnaires, took her designated place within the experimental machinery, and intentionally absorbed the catastrophic electrical payload. This decisive intervention resulted in the immediate termination of the entity's own physical body while successfully channeling the necessary vital energy to restore Lightning Lad to life. Personality and attributes
In appearance, Proty was a small, non-humanoid, amorphous lifeform, roughly the size of a large dog or small child. He possessed no skeletal structure and had a gelatinous body composed of a pliable, flesh-toned protoplasmic mass. His typical form featured a rounded, blob-like body with short, stubby appendages that served as limbs or manipulators, though he could reconfigure his body at will. Proty’s most distinguishing features were two large, expressive eyes and a simple, smiling mouth, positioned on the upper portion of his shifting mass to resemble a face. He had no hair, ears, or defined torso, and his surface was smooth and seamless, capable of stretching, flattening, or ballooning as needed. When resting or in a neutral state, Proty often assumed a vaguely cylindrical or bean-like posture. Despite his non-human physiology, Proty exhibited a deeply social and emotionally intelligent personality. Lacking spoken language, he communicated through thought-telepathy and expressive body shifts, conveying emotions and responses through shifts in form and facial expression. Proty belonged to the Protean race, native to a moon of the planet Antares II. As a Protean, his body was composed entirely of a pliable protoplasm that allowed for extreme shape-shifting. This biological trait meant Proty could imitate nearly any object, person, or creature, with varying levels of detail depending on the mass and form required. His body was lightweight, resistant to blunt force due to its elastic nature, and could flatten to squeeze through small openings or swell to multiple times his resting size. As a Protean, he had the power to imitate anything and could shapeshift into a person, animal or things form. It was said that he had a greater talent as a disguise artist than Chameleon Boy. Proteans possessed limited telepathic capabilities, which allowed them to form mental bonds with sentient beings and communicate thoughts or emotional states. This telepathy was instinctual rather than learned, serving as their primary form of interaction. The species had no internal organs in the traditional sense and required minimal sustenance, drawing energy from environmental sources.
