Biography

Gavyn

Prince Gavyn, a member of the royal family of the planetary empire in the Crownworld system, was introduced in the midst of a succession crisis. When his sister, the Princess Clryssa, ascended to the throne after their father’s passing, Gavyn was deemed unnecessary to the royal lineage due to Crownworld tradition prohibiting male heirs from ruling. As a result, he was sentenced to death by being cast into the void of space. Rather than perishing, he was rescued and empowered by the alien entity known as the Star-Keeper. Gifted with cosmic abilities, Gavyn returned to Crownworld not to claim the throne but to serve as its protector. During the events of the issue, he thwarted an assassination attempt against Clryssa, foiled a palace coup, and used his newfound powers to repel hostile forces seeking to exploit the transition of power. (Adventure Comics v1 #467)

During this period, he came to conduct a dozen impossible rescues and even saved an innocent man from execution on the prison asteroid of Kydalh. In time, rumours began circulating about the 'Starman' to the point that he had nearly become a legend with this existence being known by the Imperial Security section. (Adventure Comics v1 #467) Gavyn continued his duties as Starman, confronting a marauding space fleet threatening a Crownworld colony. Using his cosmic energy blasts, he systematically disabled the attackers’ ships while ensuring minimal loss of life. He pursued the fleet’s commander, defeating him in single combat and forcing the remaining forces into retreat. Upon returning to Crownworld, Gavyn reported to Clryssa and reaffirmed his role as both her protector and a defender of the empire. The events of this issue also reinforced his commitment to wielding his powers in service to peace and stability across Crownworld’s territories, rather than for personal ambition or conquest. (Adventure Comics v1 #468) Prince Gavyn resumed his duties as Starman by patrolling the territories under his sister Clryssa’s rule. When word came that an alien threat had begun attacking trade routes vital to the empire, Gavyn was dispatched to investigate. He traveled into space and confronted the raiders, discovering they were using advanced technology capable of destabilizing energy fields. During the ensuing conflict, Gavyn relied on his star-bolts to disable the ships and forced the raiders into retreat. He then reported back to Clryssa, ensuring the protection of the empire’s interests and demonstrating his growing reliability as its cosmic protector. (Adventure Comics v1 #469) Gavyn uncovered an insidious conspiracy within the royal court. While attending to his sister, he overheard whispers that members of the nobility were secretly in contact with external enemies. Following the lead into deep space, he encountered mercenary agents who sought to destabilize the empire from within. During his pursuit, Gavyn’s ship was ambushed, but he managed to escape by using his energy powers to shield himself from the vacuum of space long enough to counterattack. After defeating the mercenaries, he returned to the throne world, warning Clryssa that her reign was constantly under threat from betrayal both within and beyond the empire. (Adventure Comics v1 #470)

Gavyn was confronted with an otherworldly menace when a star in a nearby system began exhibiting dangerous instability. Sent to investigate, he discovered that an alien force was siphoning energy from the star, risking the destruction of the surrounding system. Battling the aliens, Gavyn unleashed his powers at full force, creating a counter-energy flow that restored balance to the star. Though victorious, he realized the destructive potential of his abilities and the fine line he walked when using them against cosmic-scale threats. This event strengthened his role as not only a defender of the empire but also of the universe’s stability. (Adventure Comics v1 #471) Gavyn was called upon to settle disputes among colonies that had grown restless under the empire’s authority. Traveling to one such colony, he encountered armed resistance from rebels who denounced imperial rule. Gavyn attempted diplomacy but was forced into battle when negotiations broke down. Using his star-bolts, he disabled enemy weapons without excessive bloodshed, demonstrating restraint and discipline. After the conflict, he delivered the surviving rebel leaders back to Clryssa, urging her to consider reforms that might prevent further uprisings. His actions underscored both his loyalty to the empire and his recognition of the need for balance between authority and compassion. (Adventure Comics v1 #472)

Prince Gavyn eventually regains the people's trust on Throneworld but their confidence in him as a dependable leader becomes unsettled when he shows his hospitality to Bizarro who has just arrived on Throneworld. Unfortunately, Lady Styx's Darkstars launch a wide scale invasion on Throneworld. Prince Gavyn tries to intercede but Gavyn's forces are decimated, leaving him as the only survivor. Adam Strange receives a communicade from Throneworld in regards to the invasion. Strange arrives on Throneworld but only to find it decimated by the Darkstars. Strange teleports Bizarro and Prince Gavyn to Rann so they can formulate a plan to destroy Lady Styx.

After the destruction of Rann’s atmosphere, Gavyn spoke on Adam Strange’s behalf. Sardath and the Rann council had no other choice but to condemn Strange for his failure to protect Rann. Gavyn convinced the council that Strange received a prediction from Synnar that Rann’s destruction would be inevitable. However, Strange managed to turn the tides by having the Weird utilize Rann’s atmosphere as an explosive catalyst which would destroy Synnar’s incursion. All but Sardath were convinced by Gavyn that Strange had no other choice. Gavyn has also expressed that Throneworld will be the new home of Rann’s remaining population.

Later on, when Gavyn was confronted by Synnar, Synnar revealed to Gavyn’s comrades that he was inadvertently responsible for Will Payton’s death. Gavyn’s dirty secret of parading in another man’s body brought Gavyn much guilt. However, Synnar offered to remove Gavyn’s guilt if he joins Synnar’s six aberrations of reality. Gavyn agrees and Synnar transforms Gavyn into Fusion, Synnar’s newly faithful convert. Gavyn was Life's seeker of the Aberrant Six. When Eye kills herself to put an end to Synnar’s conquest, Fusion along with Bizarro, follow Synnar into a dimensional rift in the hopes of fulfilling the future ambitions of their dark lord.

Powers and abilities

Prince Gavyn was a humanoid native of Crownworld whose physiology granted him the baseline traits of his species, including above-average strength, endurance, and stamina when compared to an ordinary human. After his empowerment by the Star-Keeper, these natural attributes were further supported by his ability to survive unprotected in the vacuum of space, withstand extreme environmental conditions, and operate for extended periods without rest. Even without the use of his cosmic powers, his royal upbringing ensured he was physically fit and trained for both courtly and combat duties. As such, he was able to walk through space without the need of a protective suit or personal shield. (Adventure Comics v1 #467)

Starman was able to gracefully glide through space on solar currents that only he could feel. (Adventure Comics v1 #467) According to him, there was an ebb and flow across space that allowed one to navigate through it. (Adventure Comics v1 #468)

It was shown that he could shoot bursts of stellar energy to achieve various results. He could fire a well aimed solar blast to disarm opponents. Alternatively, he could concentrate radiation bursts for heat as well as light in order to burn through obstacles. (Adventure Comics v1 #467) Controlled bursts of stellar radiation could be used to blind spy-eyes in space. (Adventure Comics v1 #468)

Energy blasts directed at him were noted to be absorbed by Starman and only made him stronger. (Adventure Comics v1 #468)

He was known to use the gauntlets to control his powers. (Adventure Comics v1 #467)

Notes

  • Prince Gavyn was created by Paul Levitz and Steve Ditko where he made his first appearance in Adventure Comics v1 #467 (January, 1980).
  • In an interview, Levitz commented on the characters creation, "Len Wein was the editor responsible for offering the assignments. He asked me to come up with a series to fit a slot in Adventure Comics. I had just read a history of the Ottoman Empire, which talked about a period when it was the practice to kill off all rival claimants to the throne when a new sultan was named. I twisted that into a science-fiction background, and was lucky enough to get Steve and Romeo as the artists."
