Pre-Crisis
Ohiyesa Smith
He earned the nickname 'Pow-Wow' Smith from a group of loggers after he successfully resolved a heated conflict through peaceful communication rather than physical violence. When Jimmy left their community to attend college, Ohiyesa deeply missed his friend and sought official permission to follow him to the white man's university. Upon entering college, Ohiyesa excelled rapidly in both athletics and academics. Following his graduation, he chose to return to his home tribe to educate his people on new technology and modern advancements. However, his return was met with hostility from another warrior named Matogee, who openly challenged Ohiyesa and accused him of completely forgetting his cultural roots and tribal history. Ohiyesa proved his rival wrong by successfully participating in and completing a traditional ritual ceremony. (Detective Comics v1 #151)

Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Ohiyesa Smith was a young Native American male of the Sioux tribe who possessed a physically fit, academic, and highly athletic build. He had a strong countenance with dark eyes and traditional facial features, complemented by dark hair that he kept long and styled in two thick, neat braids that draped forward over his chest. In his youth and during his traditional tribal events, he wore native regalia, which included a simple headband holding a single decorative feather at the back of his head, paired with a beaded necklace. While attending the white man's university, his attire shifted to fit into academic society, where he dressed in sharp, formal contemporary clothing. Upon returning to his tribe to participate in the ritual challenge, he stripped down to a simple breechcloth, displaying his athletic physique while sporting traditional tribal body paint patterns applied across his torso and limbs.
