History

A Plantanimal in Blackhawk v1 #218.

Thee Plantanimals were a race of giant creatures from the planet Ezz which appear to be a combination of reptile (or amphibian) and plant.

During a targeted military operation, the Plantimal attacked the Blackhawk squadron by emerging from a secluded valley to intercept the team's advance. The hybrid creature utilized its mobile, root-like appendages to ensnare the operational vehicles, attempting to completely crush the defensive armor with sustained constrictive force. It deployed specialized biological projectiles from its central node, fracturing the primary canopy of a fighter jet and releasing a heavy vapor to disorient the pilot. When the Blackhawks counter-attacked with standard heavy munitions, the organism actively redirected its trunk-like limbs to absorb the concussive shock waves, using the energy to expand its overall physical mass. The creature maintained its offensive perimeter until the team deployed a specialized high-voltage energy grid, which temporarily disrupted the entity's cellular cohesion and forced it to submerge beneath the loose topsoil to regenerate its damaged tissue. King Blingo of Ezz tried to call one to free the Blackhawks and himself from imprisonment by the usurper General B'Adda; however, the creature was uncontrollable. Blingo was forced to use his newly discovered superpowers to defeat the creature.

Overview

In appearance, the Plantanimals were a species of gigantic, monstrous extraterrestrial hybrids that blended distinct animalistic and botanical characteristics within a singular physical form. Their massive, irregular bodies lacked standard skeletal configurations, composed instead of dense, thick green vegetation and tangled networks of wood-like tissue. They possessed multiple elongated, prehensile root appendages that functioned as heavy limbs capable of independent locomotion and constriction. In place of a standard animal head, their primary structure featured a large central node or pod mass wrapped in protective leafy fibers. This central section housed hidden biological launch mechanisms and chemical glands capable of generating non-terrestrial vapors and fluids. The outer surface of their entire form was covered in rugged, protective bark layers and irregular textures that completely lacked typical leaves or flowers. They exhibited an immense scale that allowed them to tower over standard military aircraft and vehicles, presenting a stark, unnatural silhouette against the landscape. (Blackhawk v1 #218)

The Plantanimals demonstrated the biological capability to perform independent ground locomotion across rugged terrain using their heavy, prehensile root appendages. They possessed high physical strength and constrictive power, enabling them to completely ensnare, lift, and exert crushing pressure onto heavily armored military vehicles and aircraft. They showed the ability to synthesize and internally manufacture localized chemical compounds, which they could forcefully eject as specialized biological projectiles or heavy, disorienting vapors capable of penetrating structural canopies. They exhibited a unique energetic absorption skill, allowing their cellular tissue to directly absorb the kinetic force, heat, and concussive shock waves of conventional heavy military munitions and instantly convert that energy to rapidly increase their overall physical mass and size. Additionally, they demonstrated significant cellular resilience and regenerative capabilities, which allowed them to withstand direct explosive impacts and quickly retreat beneath the topsoil to reconstruct their biological matter after sustaining high-voltage electrical disruption. Notes

  • The Plantanimals were created by George Kashdan and Dick Dillin where they made their first appearance in Blackhawk v1 #218 (March, 1966).
