The Pantheon in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles v1 #71.

Each divine sibling granted supreme jurisdiction and absolute spiritual authority over a specific animal species. Rather than ruling through overt material force, the group anchored their long-term operations around a highly competitive, multi-millennial contest known simply as the Game. The rules dictated that the siblings must remain behind the scenes and use mortal proxies or champions to outmaneuver one another for total control of Earth. The collective established separate regional strongholds across the globe to oversee their plots, managing active factions like the Foot Clan through the direct intervention of the fox goddess Kitsune. Seeking to advance their personal placements in the trial, erratic members like the Rat King launched independent, chaotic operations inside New York City's sewer networks, capturing the mutant masters Splinter and Leonardo to subject them to telepathic psychological torture and test their worth as new pieces on the board. (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles v2 #36)

The Rat King later sought to continue the great game amongst his siblings but found each of them were not interested in pursuing the matter. This saw him looking to recruit allies in order to wage a game of Armageddon that would decide the fate of the planet. (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Annual #2021)

Overview

In appearance, the Pantheon was a divine organization whose core immortal family roster was composed of highly diverse, non-humanoid animalistic deities and shape-shifting entities. They featured an incredibly irregular, drastically mismatched collective physical presence that completely rejected standard humanoid biology or symmetrical skeletal frameworks, with their true monstrous forms scaling to immense proportions. The organization possessed no single shared natural hairstyle, skin uniformities, or facial parameters, with individual members embodying the physical characteristics of their respective beast domains. (Tales of the TMNT v2 #36)

As a group, they were a multi-species organization that naturally lacked any shared, uniform biological traits due to the immense anatomical, structural, and evolutionary differences between their distinct animal-based data matrices. They utilized their collective eons of tactical mastery and shared reality-warping heritages to execute precise historical interventions, manipulate global political shifts, and completely outmaneuver the tracking networks of human civilizations. They did not possess a single shared, uniform superpower or collective immunity against nuclear-tier energy explosions, relying instead on exceptionally high cosmic intellect, immense private wealth, and a high-tier mastery over ancient sorcery and illusion. Their specialized capabilities allowed separate units to telepathically command and perceive through entire global populations of their respective animal domains, enable effortless physical shape-shifting between human and beast profiles, and achieve complete functional immortality that resisted natural aging. Individual family members wielded specialized magic, enabling Kitsune to execute deep hypnotic mind mastery to brainwash rival warlords, while the Rat King utilized his telepathic strings to manifest overwhelming sensory illusions capable of subduing high-tier mutant ninjas. Their primary capabilities allowed them to steer the long-term history of Earth from behind closed doors, survive extreme spatial transitions, and maintain an unbroken, highly disciplined barrier of divine influence until their game faced ultimate disruption. Notes

  • The Pantheon were originally created by Chris Allan and Stephen Murphy where they made their first appearance in Tales of the TMNT v2 #35 (June, 2007) by Mirage Studios.
  • In the Mirage Studios continuity, the Pantheon presided over the lives and souls of all the animals under their respective domain. It was revealed that the Rat King was given the position of King of Rats where he came to abuse it for his own purposes. This was until he was defeated by Splinter with the Pantheon offering him the position as King of the Rats though the mutant refused after learnt that it would lead to the death of the Rat King. As a result, the Pantheon led by the Wolf King departed though it was said that Splinter could become the King of the Rats in the future as he showed a wisdom even greater than some within their ranks.
