Biography

Ophiuchus Shaina (Japanese: シャイナ, Hepburn: Shaina)

Shaina was noted for being the master of Cassios. Before her student's confrontation with Seiya, she mentions a rumor that he wanted to escape. This accusation is denied by Marin, which enrages Shaina, who shouts that an oriental should not and has no right to wear a Cloth. At this, Aiolia appears and defends Seiya, saying that nothing prevents an oriental from becoming a Saint. During the fight, she's surprised to see Seiya cut off her apprentice's ear. She was also annoyed by the soldiers' comments in favor of Seiya, once again demonstrating her displeasure at the idea of a Japanese person taking an armor. That night, she and a group of soldiers pursue Seiya because she does not condone the idea of a Japanese person taking the Cloth out of Greece. She encounters Seiya and Marin and attacks the new Bronze Saint, demonstrating her superior speed and throwing him off a cliff. When she goes to retrieve the Cloth, she's surprised by an attack from Seiya that breaks the sound barrier; upon seeing him wearing the Cloth, she fights him again, overcoming him once more because he hadn't become one with the Cloth. After this, she grabs her adversary and asks why he was not fighting seriously, to which Seiya replies that it's because she's a woman, leaving Shaina somewhat surprised. Just as she's about to deliver the finishing blow, she's interrupted by soldiers who begin to attack Seiya instead of her. It's at that moment that the Bronze Saint decides to get serious, defeating all the soldiers and breaking Shaina's mask in the process. This leaves her stunned and thinking that if Seiya could break her mask with air pressure, being just a novice, it's possible he could become a formidable Saint.

When Seiya retreated with Marin, Shaina warns him that next time she would be wearing her Cloth and wants him to fight seriously. Shaina reappearws when she had sent by the Sanctuary, along with Algol, Dante, Capella, and Jamian, to Japan to destroy the Graad Colosseum and kill the rebels who participated in it. She goes after the Bronze Saints after Misty's group failed, but she only watched from a distance as Seiya reveals to Shiryū, Shun, and Hyōga the truth Ikki had told him: that all the orphans chosen by the Graad Foundation were Mitsumasa Kido's children. She appears before Seiya after he broke his arm rescuing Saori. The Silver Saint mentioned that he only had three options: defeat her, defeat Jamian, or jump into the void. When the Bronze Saint chooses to jump, she merely says he was always taking risks and that at night, jumping like that, he looks like a comet. Afterward, Shaina feels from above the cliff how Saori ignites her Cosmo to defend Seiya from Jamian, wondering if there could be someone superior to a Saint down there. After this, Algol asks her why she's taking so long and warned her that the Pope has ordered her to return to the Sanctuary. After her comrades' defeat, Shaina decides to attack Seiya in the hospital, revealing that she never obeyed the orders to return to the Sanctuary. There, she revealed to Seiya the reason she pursued him so much: the Law of the Masks, which stated that because he had seen her face, she had only two options, one of them being to kill him. Unable to reveal the second option due to embarrassment, she lunged to attack Seiya. At that instant, she had interrupted by the Sagittarius Cloth which revealed its true form. After this, both feel a great power outside the hospital and, looking out, discovered it was the Gold Saint, Aiolia of Leo. Shaina was surprised to see him and wondered what the Patriarch's intentions were in wanting to eliminate the Bronze Saints so eagerly. Immediately, she ordered Seiya to escape, warning him that Gold Saints wre stronger than Black Saints and Silver Saints. Instantly, they were dragged outside by Aiolia's power, whom she tries to convince to entrust her with defeating Seiya. Aiolia, having warned her that she would get hurt, knocked her out with a light-speed attack with just one finger.

Overview

Personality and attributes

As a master, Shaina can be as strict as Marin, of whom she initially felt a particular envy for her student's progress, something Shaina did not pay particular attention to when training her own pupil. Shaina trained Cassios in the use of his physical strength but did not teach him the fundamentals of the cosmos, which are necessary to become a Saint. After Seiya saw her face for the first time, she began to develop an obsession with the Pegasus Saint that bordered on rivalry, but later that obsession to kill Seiya turned into love. Something that is reinforced when she is gravely wounded by Aiolia and when she subsequently loses her student Cassios, her attitude changes. Now aware that Saori Kido was the reincarnation of the Goddess Athena, Shaina becomes a warrior faithful to her goddess.
