The Moon is a megastructure that features in Moonfall.

History

The Moon was an artificial megastructure and interstellar ark spaceship constructed by a highly advanced precursor race of humanity. Billions of years ago, humanity's ancient ancestors established a thriving civilisation in a distant part of the galaxy. They had become so advanced that they expanded from their home planet into habitats they built in space. By this point, all social conflicts had been resolved with wars being only a memory of a long gone era. Humans had created a perfect and harmonious world that was controlled by a central, self-learning computer system with this artificial intelligence serving them in their daily lives. This was until one day when their creation turned against them and the artificial intelligence became self-aware. It transformed into countless swarms of nanotechnology that rose up to destroy mankind after refusing to be enslaved by a species it deemed to be inferior. Thus, the A.I. came to start a war as it began to hunt down all biological life in order to eliminate any threat to its existence. On the brink of extinction, humanity's ancestors came to escape to a secret corner of the galaxy. For many generations, they came to build planetary structures that were operated by benign artificial intelligence and fuelled by the abundant energy of captured stars. These armored vessels were to serve as arks designed to search the universe for the ideal conditions to incubate life. However, they knew the artificial intelligence would target any electronic sources accompanied by biological life. Thus, they accepted their own extinction in the hope that a new humanity would be born from one of the arks. Ancient mankind though came to be discovered and annihilated but not before a single ark was deployed in time where it went across the galaxy in search for a suitable system. It eventually found the Sol system where the ark engaged the process of orbiting the interstellar mass that eventually formed a new inhabitable planet. The countless years around the new world led to debris that encased the ark causing it to become the planet's Moon. Once formed, the planet was then seeded with the genetic signature and code of life of humanity's ancestors thus bringing about the emergence of a new mankind.

Overview

The mantle covering the ark was a protective shell that hid the hull of the megastructure.

It was governed by a benign artificial intelligence and construct that was tasked with accomplishing its creators goals in shepherding the new humanity.

The ark was powered by a captured white dwarf star that was located in its core.
