History

The Monster Minds were intelligent plant mutations that were accidently created by the Human scientist Audric. Audric had conducted a series of experiments in his laboratory in another galaxy with the express purpose of engineering a species of plant to end hunger. His project would ultimately be successful and the plants were created but a burst of radiation from an exploding star drastically affecting the plants. The specimens quickly gained sentience and mutated into humanoid creatures with distinct brains that began engulfing his laboratory forcing Audric to flee. The leader of these Monster Minds would be Saw Boss who turned his newly created race into a scourge of the universe with his creator's laboratory being his base of operations. After driving Audric from his laboratory, the Monster Minds set out on a mission to conquer the universe. Using ever-growing Expansion Vines, they extended their field of influence across multiple star systems. Audric went into hiding and was able to create a special magic root capable of destroying the Monster Minds. (Episode: Escape from the Garden of Evil)

To defeat these mutations, Audric created the Magic Root that had been split in two but when united had the power to destroy all the Monster Minds. This led to the Monster Minds pursuing him as he sought to rendezvous with his family and Gillian. To prevent capture, he gave half the Root to his servant Oon and tasked him with giving it to Jayce with Audric desiring to meet them separately. Oon would be pursued by the Monster Minds who chased him to a valley protected by a dome powered by sunlight that had the rest of Audric's family with Gillian. Audric disappeared across the stars, but Jayce and his Lightning League vowed to find him and unite the magic root in order to put an end to the Monster Minds' reign of terror. (Episode: Escape from the Garden of Evil)

The Monster Minds established physical control over the planet Jung and the black market world of Exas, utilizing their territorial dominance to monitor local activities. Upon detecting an energy resonance from Audric's magic root near the Planet Xiang, Saw Boss issued a directive to his forces to locate and secure all local historical artifacts, specifically targeting a designated ancient vase that contained a recorded message from Audric. The Monster Mind vehicle drones infiltrated the marketplace on the planet to execute this theft, physically seizing the container before the arriving members of the Lightning League could retrieve it. Saw Boss ordered the stolen item to be transported directly to his main regional fortress on Exas. When the human resistance forces breached the stronghold to reclaim the artifact, the Monster Minds deployed their mass-produced vehicular clones to engage the intruders in heavy ground combat, utilizing their organic weapons, vines, and laser arrays to defend the perimeter. The entities maintained their offensive bombardment until the opposition successfully bypassed the automated defense lines, retrieved the target object, and retreated from the planet. (Episode: The Vase of Xiang)

In Sector 37 Delta, a mass group of Monster Mind Vines bypassed many planets in that area as it targeted a world rich in organic life that grew its native plants to enormous sizes. Saw Boss intended to conquer that world so that his Monster Minds could grow to powerful forms and thus conquer the rest of known space. (Episode: Silver Crusaders)

Overview

In appearance, the Monster Minds were a species of sentient, organic, plant-based entities that exhibited highly variable physical configurations ranging from humanoid mutant forms to weaponized, armored combat vehicles. Their biological structure was composed entirely of dense, thick green and purple plant matter, twisting vines, and root systems that lacked standard animal or human anatomy. Originally, the creatures were simple genetically engineered plants incapable of harming anyone until a burst of radiation mutated them. The newly formed Monster Minds sprouted from the plants as small brain-like humanoids that quickly grew into humanoid forms. Evolved Monster Minds possessed a humanoid torso covered in thick overlapping layers of leafy bark, an elongated head with glowing red eyes, and no visible mouth or nose. Their prehensile, root-like limbs terminated in heavy, multi-pronged claws. The mass-produced drone forces of the species did not feature faces or distinct bodies, manifesting instead as large, mobile plant-car structures covered in jagged thorns and thick armor plates formed from hardened vegetation. These vehicular forms featured integrated, organic weaponry—such as large spinning buzz-saws, maces, and battering rams made of solid wood—built directly into their front chassis. The entirety of the species was interconnected through large, pulsing interstellar vines that continuously expanded across terrain and planetary environments. (Episode: Escape from the Garden of Evil)

Monster Minds demonstrated the biological ability to undergo rapid, near-instantaneous physical transformation from stationary or mobile plant forms into heavily armored, fully functional combat vehicles equipped with organic weaponry. They possessed the unique skill to absorb, tap into, and redirect a localized energy source known as the power of the black light, which they utilized to instantly teleport their massive laboratory headquarters across vast distances to different planetary coordinates. They exhibited advanced engineering and scientific capabilities, operating and modifying high-tech machinery, laboratory systems, and computers within their seized facility to monitor deep space and track specific energetic signatures. They also showed the ability to continuously grow, mass-produce, and clone identical vehicular units from their central root systems to bolster their armies within short periods. Additionally, they possessed high physical durability, allowing their armored bark shells to easily withstand heavy physical impacts, and they demonstrated the ability to completely drain planets of vital resources, rapidly absorbing all available surface water and mineral components to fuel their expansion. (Episode: Escape from the Garden of Evil)

Generally, Monster Mind battles are carried out by clones of the main Monster Minds that are grown from vines. These clones are referred to as "troopers"; Saw Trooper, Terror Trooper, K.O. Trooper, etc. The true Monster Minds change from their humanoid forms into vehicles upon leaving their headquarters, although they are significantly larger and more powerful than their mass-produced clones. In addition to their laser arsenals, Monster Minds' primary weapons involving their extendable limb vine attached on top of them when in vehicle forms.

Pods could be dropped from orbit which when impacted the ground manifested into massive Vines that allowed the Monster Minds to form a foothold on a planet. (Episode: Steel Against Shadow) Alternatively, the Vines were able to move through space and force their way onto a planetary soil. Once there, the took root and manifested flower buds that birthed more Monster Minds. (Episode: Silver Crusaders)

Monster Minds appear as Humanoid looking creatures but with a plant based form which meant that they had vines and green coloured skin typically. They were capable of changing their form into a vehicle which possessed plant based characteristics. The Monster Minds made frequent use of Drill Vines which were capable of functioning in space and engulfing entire planets. These vines infested starships or worlds where they robbed them off all resources. The plants were capable of forming seeds which produced newer Monster Minds allowing for the creation of an army very quickly.

A majority of the Monster Minds forces are clones of the primary generals of Saw Boss who are all given orders telepathically by their leader in their goal for universal dominance.

The giant vines created by their kind were able to stretch into space and thus allowed the Monster Minds to spread from world to world. This allowed their kind to ravage planets that were drained of their minerals and water. (Episode: Escape from the Garden of Evil)

Members

Terror Tank.
  • Saw Boss : leader of the Monster Minds with the Saw Trooper units having fanged faces on their fronts and are equipped with huge buzz-saws attached to vines. Commanding legions of cloned minions and Expansion Vines, Saw Boss is bent on conquering the entire universe, launching attacks on every known inhabited planet. The only opposition to his conquest are the Lightning League, a group of heroic space travellers led by Jayce, the daredevil son of Saw Boss' creator Audric. Before going into hiding, Audric left behind one half of a magical root supposedly capable of destroying the Monster Minds. Recognising the root as a threat, Saw Boss is determined to hunt down the Lightning League and destroy Jayce's root before he can find Audric and the root's other half.
  • Gun Grinner : resembling a Jeep, it has a set of laser guns sticking out of the mouth on its front and a vine on its back that ends in a barbed flail.
  • Terror Tank : tank armed with a powerful cannon and a vine that ends in a monstrous snapping mouth with four large fangs.
  • K.O. Kruiser : truck-shaped with an angry face on its front and The vine on its back clutches a large green ball for crushing opponents.
  • Beast Walker : largest variety of Monster Mind who on the battlefield, it appeared as a huge four-legged robot armed with many laser weapons.
  • Saw Trooper :
  • Dr. Zorg : a scientist working with Saw Boss. A scientific rival of Audric's. He is brilliant in his own field, but overall he is not a very nice guy: he's selfish, and thinks only of his own self glorification. His quest to gain all the information in Audric's old computer (the one that's now in SB's headquarters) leads him to become an enemy of both Jayce and the LL.

Notes

  • The Monster Minds were created by Jean Chalopin and developed by J. Michael Straczynski with them featuring as antagonists in the setting of the Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors universe.
