The Mindless Ones are a species that feature in Marvel Comics.

History

The Mindless Ones were a race of lumbering rock-like humanoid entities that inhabited the dimensions. According to one account, their kind were created by Plokta the mindful one that was an extradimensional magical being. (Captain Britain and MI-13 v1 #6) The Faltine Dormammu after becoming master of the Dark Dimension had to contend with the Mindless Ones that ran rampant through this realm. He came to contain them in a pocket within the dimension where a magical barrier kept them at bay. (Strange Tales v1 #127)

In some parts of the universe, they were known as Neutron Slaves. Many were put to work mining neutron stars and other ultradense gravity sites. (Nova v4 #29)

In 1944, during the midst of World War II, members of the U.S.'s Howling Commandos found themselves in the Dark Dimension leading to attacks from the Mindless Ones who also targeted Captain America along with his partner Bucky when they found in that realm. (Captain America - Nick Fury The Otherworld War v1 #1)

Later on, Doctor Strange entered into a magical duel against Dormammu were the intensity of their fight resulted in the magical barrier containing the Mindless Ones being broken. This forced Dormammu to try to restore it before the creatures destroyed everything in their path. He was aided by Doctor Strange and as a boon for his aid the Dread Dormammu agreed to call off his attack against Earth. (Strange Tales v1 #127)

The Mighty Avengers came to invade Latveria in order to arrest Doctor Doom leading to him summoning Mindless Ones to attack the heroes. (Mighty Avengers v1 #11)

An unknown individual was responsible for enslaving a group of Mindless Ones and utilised the as miners on neutron stars to harvest for rare metals, priceless chemical compounds and metal alloys that could be created in those extreme gravity conditions. These conditions, however, triggered a mutation within the brains of these Neutron Slaves allowing them to develop intelligence and become smarter. (Nova v4 #30) One group of Mindless Ones were put to work mining a neutron star when they discovered that the locations surface allowed them to manufacture a drug called Krush. After discovering this development, they overthrew their slave masters and began to operate as drug runners. One of their number known as the The Mind came to serve as the leader of the gang known as the Black Hole Sons. (Nova v4 #29)

A Mindless One was given sapience during a mission to Uatu's citadel causing the creature to go mad as a result. The individual came to attack the Baxter Building and stole the Ultimate Nullifier leading to a battle against the Thing. The Mindless One was in a state of torture for being granted knowledge and preferred to return to its prior existence. In desperation, it used the Ultimate Nullifier on itself and thus destroyed itself to end its pain. (Original Sin v1 #1)

Misty Beck used a vanishing spell to send the entire Mercury Rising building into another dimension where it along with its inhabitants were attacked by a horde of Mindless Ones. (Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider v1 #18)

Later on, Dormammu came to be manifested into the main universe by using Ego the Living Planet as a host body. Upon hatching in this body, Dormammu began a war to conquer the universe and declared his Last Annihilation as he sent forth his army of Mindless Ones to conquer all space. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #16) As part of his invasion, five spiritually important worlds were targeted that included Hala, Skrullos, Aerie, Spartax and Chitauri Prime. These worlds would become the basis for a galactic pentagram through which Dormammu intended to merge this reality with the Dark Dimension. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #17) The Last Annihilation was ultimately stopped by the Guardians of the Galaxy and their allies when they used an anti-magic Mysterium bullet to banish Dormammu from Ego's body and back to the Dark Dimension thus ending the onslaught from the Mindless Ones. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #18)

Overview

Mindless Ones attack Ms. Marvel in Mighty Avengers v1 #11.

It was noted that they were seriously strong and almost indestructible. (Nova v4 #30) They were able to survive in hard vacuum and in environments of extreme gravity. (Nova v4 #29) Mindless Ones were shown to come in all shapes and sizes with some being humanoid sized whilst others were giants and some were shaped like starships. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #16)

Though referred to as being mindless, it was claimed that they were beings with more one tracked minds. (Nova v4 #30) Ultimately, they were considered as base creatures who existed only to destroy. (Captain America - Nick Fury The Otherworld War v1 #1)

Another type of these creatures were the Aimless Ones. (Scarlet Witch v2 #14)

Notes

  • The Mindless Ones were created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko where they made their first appearance in Strange Tales v1 #127 (December, 1964).

In other media

Television

  • In Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors, the Mindless Ones appeared in the setting of the animated television series in the episode "Cloak and Dagger".
  • In Avengers Assemble, the Mindless Ones had appeared as servants of the dread Dormammu and as antagonists on the show. They first appeared in the episode "Widow's Run" when they emerged from a portal to the Dark Dimension with Dormammu due to the effects of the Infinity Gems on reality. This resulted in Doctor Strange and the Avengers fighting them with the Mindless Ones sent back to the Dark Dimension by Black Widow using the power of the Infinity Gems. In "The New Guy", a number of them served Red Skull after he made a pact with Dormammu in order to protect himself from the wrath of the Mad Titan Thanos.
  • In Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers, the Mindless Ones appeared in the setting of the anime television series.

Video games

  • In Marvel: Avengers Alliance, the Mindless Ones appeared in the Facebook video game with them having their own Dossier entry.
  • In Marvel Heroes, the Mindless Ones appeared as antagonists in the setting of the MMORPG video game.
  • In Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, the Mindless Ones appeared as antagonists in the setting of the Wii video game. They were inhabitants of the Dark Dimension where a tear in the fabric of reality led o them invading London forcing Elsa Bloodstone to battle them in their realm. The Avengers who were transported into the Dark Dimension came to battle the Mindless Ones and thwarted the plans of their master Dormammu.
