Biography

Chosen by Brother EYE in O.M.A.C. v3 #3.

Michael Costner

Costner first appeared as an unsuspecting civilian drawn into the shadowy machinations of Brother Eye, the satellite intelligence network created to monitor metahumans. Employed as an office worker in a large metropolitan city, Michael led an uneventful life until he was unknowingly infected with a nanotechnological virus developed by Brother Eye. This microscopic infiltration enabled the satellite to reconfigure his physiology on command, transforming him into a cybernetic being known as OMAC—the One-Man Army Corps—an adaptive soldier designed to serve as a countermeasure against metahuman threats. His first activation occurred when Brother Eye detected a potential threat nearby and forcibly triggered Michael’s transformation, overwhelming him with pain and confusion as his body converted into an armored blue construct. (OMAC v3 #1)

Following his unwilling transformation, Michael found himself pursued by agents of Checkmate, A.R.G.U.S., and other metahuman surveillance forces seeking to contain the OMAC outbreak. In his enhanced form, he demonstrated immense strength, energy projection, and technological interfacing capabilities, making him both a target and a weapon. Brother Eye guided his actions remotely, using his body as a field operative without his conscious consent, forcing him into violent confrontations with heroes and villains alike. Though he struggled to regain autonomy, each attempt to resist the satellite’s control resulted in system overrides that reasserted OMAC’s programming, turning Michael into a pawn in a much larger conflict over global security and metahuman oversight. (OMAC v3 #3)

As his struggle continued, Michael began to understand fragments of the truth behind his condition, realizing that he had been chosen as a test subject due to his proximity to metahuman activity and his psychological profile—an unassuming, easily monitored individual. Attempts by Batman and Checkmate operatives to disable Brother Eye only partially succeeded, with Michael oscillating between human and OMAC forms as control shifted between his will and the satellite’s programming. In one of his final missions, he confronted the system that had enslaved him, managing to sever his link temporarily, but at great personal cost as the OMAC nanites continued to rewrite his biology. Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Michael Costner’s human form was that of an ordinary man—light-skinned, physically average, and typically dressed in the plain attire of an office worker. Upon activation as OMAC, his body underwent a radical transformation into a metallic, cybernetic warrior, sheathed in glowing blue armor with intricate circuit-like patterns and a prominent red eye emblem embedded on his chest. His face was consumed by a mask-like configuration of the same armor, leaving no visible trace of humanity. The OMAC form radiated energy and emitted mechanical light, symbolizing the fusion of flesh and machine. (OMAC v3 #1)

Michael’s personality was initially portrayed as kind, modest, and unremarkable—a man whose defining trait was his ordinariness. This everyman nature heightened the tragedy of his transformation, as he became the unwilling vessel of a weaponized intelligence. In his moments of regained consciousness, he expressed guilt and fear over the destruction he caused while under Brother Eye’s control, yet retained a resilient moral compass that drove him to seek redemption and freedom. His attempts to communicate with the heroes who hunted him often reflected desperation rather than hostility, underscoring the psychological toll of being used as a living weapon. (OMAC v3 #5)

Powers and abilities

In his Omni Mind and Community form in O.M.A.C. v3 #2.

As OMAC, Michael possessed a range of powers derived from the nanotechnological conversion that had fused his body with Brother Eye’s systems. These included superhuman strength, durability, flight, energy projection, and the ability to interface with digital systems directly through electromagnetic and cybernetic means. His armor adapted dynamically to combat scenarios, enhancing speed and resilience against metahuman opponents. The nanites within his body also granted him regenerative capabilities, allowing damage to his OMAC form to repair almost instantaneously. However, all of these abilities operated under Brother Eye’s command protocols, meaning Michael’s autonomy was secondary to the satellite’s objectives. This dependency made his greatest strength inseparable from his greatest imprisonment. (OMAC v3 #8)
