Biography
Origin
Mia Dearden
The troubled teenager was living on the streets of Star City when she crossed paths with Oliver Queen after a chance encounter while attempting to survive in the city’s darker districts. During this issue, Mia attempted to defend herself from an abusive situation by lashing out at her aggressor with a concealed knife, but Oliver intervened to de-escalate the violence. Her boldness in facing danger and her unwillingness to back down caught Oliver’s attention, setting the stage for her future role in his life and in the Green Arrow legacy. (Green Arrow v3 #2)
Mia’s relationship with Oliver deepened as he took an interest in her well-being. When she witnessed a robbery near Star City’s inner streets, she attempted to intervene despite lacking training, chasing after the culprits with nothing but her determination. Oliver stopped her mid-chase and then engaged the criminals himself, but Mia’s actions demonstrated both recklessness and courage. As Oliver and his allies uncovered Dover’s malevolent nature, Mia became caught in the conflict, witnessing firsthand the darker realities of heroism and survival. After Dover’s defeat, Oliver took her under his protection, offering her a home and a chance at a new beginning. Living in the Queen household, Mia began to adapt to a more stable life, though her trauma and distrust of authority remained evident. She gradually developed admiration for Oliver’s work as Green Arrow, seeing in his mission a reflection of the justice she had long been denied. Her keen perception and determination to improve herself became defining traits, as she began training in martial arts, archery, and self-defense under Oliver and Connor Hawke’s guidance. (Green Arrow v3 #6) She struggled with her past, haunted by her experiences as a victim of exploitation, but her newfound sense of purpose drove her forward. During her time training with Oliver, she expressed a strong desire to become his partner—a notion he initially rejected, fearing the dangers of his world. However, Mia’s persistence and innate courage began to convince him otherwise. Her early training sequences reflected her drive for self-redemption and independence, emphasizing that she sought heroism not for fame, but to protect others from the suffering she had endured. (Green Arrow v3 #7)
Speedy
Green Arrow made Mia go back to high school. She desperately wanted to be trained to be the new Speedy, but Arrow told her times were different from when heroes had sidekicks, things were more dangerous, and he could not stand to lose her. Mia gave in, but told him that if she still had aspirations of being a hero when she was 21 she expected him to train her. (Green Arrow v3 #11)
Mia teased Arrow about spending the night with Black Canary at JSA headquarters, and then started flirting with Conner. Arrow told her to just get to school. (Green Arrow v3 #13) Later, Mia learned that Conner Hawke had been shot, and went to be by his side. However, the shooter Onomatopoeia went to the hospital to finish the job. He took out Mia, but was stopped in his tracks by Green Arrow. (Green Arrow v3 #15)
Green Arrow later decided to go back to the south seas island where he first became a hero, and told Mia to pick him up in a month. She did not appreciate being left alone, and wanted to go to the island when she heard a typhoon hit it, but held herself back. At the end of the month, she came to be reunited with Green Arrow. (Green Arrow v3 #22)
Green Arrow learned the old Arrowcar was still around when he saw it up for bids on an auction site. Mia wanted him to buy it, but he told her it belonged to the past. Batman bought the Arrowcar for Arrow, and he had to defend it from Scavenger, who wanted it for his own. he took the Arrowcar for a ride with Mia, then blew it up and told Mia not to question his decision. (Green Arrow v3 #33) Mia and Black Canary had lunch, and Mia asked Arrow not to join them, still steaming that he'd cheated on Canary and not come clean. While Mia was practicing combat techniques and the bow-and-arrow, Green Arrow told her he was sick of her passive-aggressive behavior and had to have a talk with her. He told her how much he regretted cheating on Canary, but would not be telling her because it would only hurt her, and only serve to clear his conscience. Mia gave him a hug and they were once again on speaking terms. (Green Arrow v3 #35)
Her journey reached a turning point when she was diagnosed as HIV-positive, the result of her past life before meeting Oliver. This revelation deeply affected both her and those around her, but Mia refused to succumb to despair. Instead, she channeled her struggle into discipline and activism, becoming a symbol of resilience and awareness within the DC Universe. The depiction of her illness was handled with empathy and realism, emphasizing her strength and refusal to be defined by her condition. Her openness about her diagnosis also helped challenge the stigma surrounding HIV, marking a milestone in mainstream comics representation. (Green Arrow v3 #43)
Mia’s official debut as a costumed vigilante came when she adopted the mantle of Speedy, following in the legacy of Roy Harper. Wearing a red costume and wielding a bow of her own, she became Green Arrow’s new sidekick and partner. Her skills in archery and combat quickly matured, though her greatest strength remained her empathy and moral clarity. Unlike many heroes, Mia’s perspective was grounded in her lived experience of poverty and exploitation, giving her a sharper understanding of the human cost of crime. Her partnership with Oliver was marked by mutual respect and an unspoken familial bond, as she became not just his protégé, but the closest thing he had to a daughter. (Green Arrow v3 #44)
As Speedy, Mia’s adventures took her into the larger world of superheroes, where she earned the respect of peers such as Wonder Girl, Superboy, and Robin. She became a recurring member of the Teen Titans, where her sharp wit and pragmatism often balanced the group’s youthful idealism. Her time with the Titans deepened her sense of belonging, allowing her to move beyond the traumas of her past and find friendship among other young heroes. Despite her guarded demeanor, she displayed loyalty and compassion, frequently acting as the team’s moral voice when others faltered. (Teen Titans v3 #21)
Mia’s character continued to evolve as she grew more comfortable in her dual life as a vigilante and advocate. She participated in outreach and charitable work in Star City, using her public profile to promote awareness about social issues affecting vulnerable youth. These efforts reflected her belief that heroism extended beyond combat—that saving lives also meant providing hope and support to those society had abandoned. Her grounded worldview and unflinching honesty made her a unique voice within the superhero community, bridging the gap between street-level crime-fighting and real-world activism. (Green Arrow v3 #54)
Throughout her tenure as Speedy, Mia Dearden’s relationship with Oliver Queen deepened into a dynamic built on mentorship and trust. Though she often challenged his authority and questioned his decisions, she remained fiercely loyal to him and his mission. In turn, Oliver came to view her as one of his greatest successes—a reminder that redemption and heroism could emerge from even the darkest beginnings. Mia’s courage, integrity, and refusal to be victimized defined her legacy as one of DC’s most human and inspiring young heroes. (Green Arrow v3 #59)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different series of events.
Her father was John King who was a philanthropist that was ranked as the third richest man in the world behind the likes of Bruce Wayne as well as Lex Luthor. Whilst seemingly a humanitarian, he hid a darker nature where he forced people to work for him by placing them in his eternal debt. At some point, Mia and her mother moved to Seattle where her mother discovered King's true nature leading to him murdering her. Mia witnessed the act and fled the house where she was on the run as her father tried to get her killed in order to preserve his secret. (Green Arrow v5 #37)

(Teen Titans v3 #34)
