Biography
Mei Isayama (Japanese: 諫山 冥, Hepburn: Isayama Mei) was a female member of the Isayama family who were the daughter of Yuu Isayama. This family of exorcists were skilled combatants that were trained in battling phantoms that were spirits that targeted the living. The Isayama clan was headed by her uncle Naraku Isayama who was a trained exorcist though had no heirs. This changed when he rescued a girl by the name of Yomi whose parents were killed by phantoms leaving her an orphan. Naraku would adopt her and induct her into the family thus leading her to take the name Yomi Isayama and she became the cousin to Mei. It was discovered that Yomi had the skill of sight that allowed her to see phantoms and supernatural foes. Following a period of training, Yomi would prove to be a skilled combatant and a prodigy vanquisher. As a result, she became Naraku's heir and given the Isayama family sword along with the spiritual beast Rangurren. Unknown to her, Yomi was resented by her cousin Mei who believed that the sword and beast were her heritage that had been taken from her. Furthermore, Yomi was being groomed as the family heir who would take over her adoptive father's leadership of the clan. As such, Mei and her own father Yuu were secretly resentful of her being a member of their family. By her teenage years, Mei continued to operate as an independent exorcist who did not align herself with the government divisions that targeted the growing number of supernatural threats.
Yomi Isayama functioned as an elite field operative within the Special Disaster Countermeasure Division, a covert government organization tasked with neutralizing supernatural threats across Japan. Following an emergency alert regarding a catastrophic category-A paranormal breakout in Tokyo, she deployed to the scene alongside her agency colleagues. She navigated an underground facility where she encountered the heavily armed members of the Ministry of Defense's elite tactical unit. Operating under the malevolent influence of a corrupted spiritual artifact embedded within her body, Yomi Isayama drew her sword and initiated a ruthless, systematic assault. She single-handedly slaughtered the entire tactical team, effortlessly slicing through their body armor and neutralizing their firearms. Her former fiancé, Noriyuki Izuna, and her close sister-figure, Kagura Tsuchimiya, arrived in the subterranean tunnels to intercept her. Yomi Isayama explicitly rejected their pleas to cease hostilities, engaged them in a brief, aggressive physical standoff, and then utilized her massive spiritual beast to break through the structural architecture, escaping into the night to coordinate her ongoing war against the human population.
After her death, Kazuhiro's butterflies attacked Yomi in blade form where they seriously injured her along with taking away her ability to speak. In the aftermath, Yomi was held as the primary suspect in Mei's murder and others mistakenly believed she had killed Mei in an effort to take control of the family for herself.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Yomi Isayama was a human Japanese female with a slender, highly athletic build and fair skin. She possessed long, straight black hair that fell down past her lower back, a neat fringe that covered her forehead, and dark, piercing eyes. Her specialized combat uniform consisted of a modified dark sailor-style school uniform, featuring a long-sleeved black top with a structured white collar trim, a matching pleated black mini-skirt, and a distinctive bright red neckerchief tied loosely at her chest. She wore long black stockings that extended past her knees and practical, dark flat civilian loafers suitable for rapid acrobatics and high-speed swordplay. Her face bore a cold, impassive expression accented by the faint, crystalline outline of a glowing red gem embedded directly into her skin. She carried her signature weapon, a traditional katana with a dark hilt and a decorative guard, safely housed in a black wooden scabbard fastened to her waist.
A part of her was noted to had hated her uncle Naraku for not making her the head of the family. This anger extended to her adoptive cousin Yomi as she resented her for being named as heir to the Isayama clan. Such feelings did not manifest openly but were secretive thoughts that she kept to herself. Mitogawa was able to sense these within her and deemed them as sufficient emotions that would feed a Bane Stone. As a result, under the influence of the stone, she was responsible for the calculated murder of her uncle Naraku and orchestrating the events that saw Yomi being removed from the family. She would take the Isayama sword that she believed was her birthright and saw Yomi removed from the family home. However, during moments when the stone began rejecting her, she became assaulted by despair at her actions before the Bane Stone led her to continue her path of destruction.
Powers and abilities
Yomi Isayama was a member of the human race who belonged to a lineage of elite spiritual vanquishers, making her a hereditary exorcist. On a basic feats level, her human biology was honed to peak physical condition through continuous, intense martial arts and tactical blade training from early childhood. She was an exceptional member of her species, recognized across the vanquisher clans as a generational prodigy due to her unparalleled mastery of high-speed iaido sword techniques and hand-to-hand combat systems. Her primary power was spiritual manipulation, which allowed her to see incorporeal entities, perceive regional supernatural energy signatures, and channel spiritual currents directly into her ancestral sword, Shishio. This weapon housed her primary innate asset: the contract with Ranguren, a massive, multi-headed reptilian spiritual beast that she could summon at will to execute devastating physical strikes or transport her through the air. Following her corruption by a cursed stone, her baseline capabilities were drastically augmented, providing her with superhuman strength sufficient to shatter steel structures, enhanced speed that outpaced modern automatic gunfire, and an advanced regeneration factor that rapidly closed physical wounds.
With the power of the Bane Stone, she gained its great power that attracted the attention of other phantoms that gathered in the area around her where they attacked others at the site. It also provided her a level of regenerative ability that healed any wounds. Even fatal wounds were instantly repaired and did not impair her movement or capabilities. This power was only weakened when the Bane Stone began to reject her whereupon all the wounds she sustained prior to her death began to manifest on her body.
