Biography
Megumin (Japanese: めぐみん)
She decided to become an Explosion mage after a busty older woman saved her with Explosion magic when she was young, and after learning it, claims she "must cast Explosion once a day or die." While still attending school, Megumin would swindle food from Yunyun every day since her parents couldn't afford meals. Due to her exceptional academic performance, Megumin was able to graduate early. When she left to travel alone, Yunyun predicted she would be "at a loss due to a lack in the means of survival, begging a useless guy for a meal."
Megumin made a characteristically dramatic entrance into the lives of Kazuma Satou and Aqua by responding to their recruitment notice with an overly theatrical self-introduction, identifying herself as an Arch-Wizard and a member of the Crimson Magic Clan. She wore a distinctive tattered cloak and a wide-brimmed wizard's hat, completing her eccentric look with a red eye patch that she claimed suppressed her 'unfathomable' power. Despite her impressive credentials, she quickly revealed her singular, obsessive devotion to Explosion magic, flatly refusing to learn any other spells even though her chosen path left her completely incapacitated after a single cast. During her first outing to the plains outside the town of Axel, she demonstrated this destructive capability by obliterating a group of monsters with a massive blast, only to collapse face-first into the dirt immediately afterward. She spent the remainder of the afternoon being carried back to town on Kazuma's back, unrepentant and already planning her next display of pyrotechnics. By the end of her first day with the party, she had successfully established her role as a high-damage but high-maintenance asset, whose pride in her "ultimate magic" far outweighed her practical utility in a sustained fight. Megumin participated in the legendary cabbage harvest of Axel, where she stood atop a hill and unleashed a massive Explosion that vaporised a large portion of the flying crop, though the effort rendered her immobile for the remainder of the event. She spent much of her time being carried around by Kazuma as she insisted on her daily ritual of firing her single spell at distant targets to maintain her mastery. During a quest to thin the population of Giant Toads in the outskirts, she attempted to provide magical support but was quickly intercepted by the massive amphibians before she could complete her lengthy incantations. She found herself repeatedly swallowed by the creatures, emerging soaked in toad slime and requiring rescue after her singular magical contribution failed to clear the field. Despite the indignity of these encounters, she remained steadfast in her refusal to learn lower-tier spells, preferring to face certain consumption by monsters rather than compromise her identity as a purist of the explosion arts. By the end of these early excursions, Megumin had become a fixture of the party's chaotic dynamic, balancing her role as a living siege engine with her status as a frequent liability who needed to be physically retrieved from the battlefield after every victory.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Megumin was a young girl with shoulder-length dark brown hair and oddly languid crimson-colored eyes. She has fair skin and a light complexion. Typically, she was dressed in the classic attire of a witch such as a black cloak, a red robe, orange boots and a black wizard's hat, all with gold border and trimmings, alongside black choker, belt and fingerless gloves. Megumin's right leg is wrapped in white bandages and a black stocking on the left one. She carries a brown staff with a floating blue gem that later turned red.
She tended to be loud, boisterous, and eccentric girl with a flair for theatrics.
Being a member of the Crimson Demons, she shares many of her people’s characteristics, such as displaying chuunibyou tendencies and having a fondness for strange names. Megumin often comes off as cocky and arrogant, constantly boasting about her destructive powers, but is quick to drop her act when put in a desperate situation.
Megumin was utterly obsessed with explosion magic, investing all of her stat increases in her one explosion spell because she thinks all other magic was basically useless, despite the spell draining all her energy after one use and being generally impractical. She refuses to learn any other type of magic, routinely flying in the face of all logic to protect her explosion magic. Because of her obstinance, no other party will have her despite Crimson Demons being known for their powerful wizards, and Kazuma only accepted her after she blackmailed him. She demonstrates zero self-control when it comes to her explosions, and will often completely disregard any consequences as long as she can cast one explosion spell a day.
Though she plays the part of the supremely powerful wizard, Megumin is actually quite childish and immature. She is sensitive about her age and underdeveloped body, becoming either despondent or aggressive when treated like a little girl. She maintains a somewhat petty rivalry with her old classmate Yunyun, and never misses an opportunity to bully and harass her, despite secretly seeing her as a friend.
Powers and abilities
Megumin had high stats in terms of Intelligence, being the highest on her party, and Magic Proficiency, being naturally gifted in terms of magical ability and has been stated to have high mana reserves as a result. Were it not for her desire to focus solely on Explosion magic it's very likely she'd be able to use a wide range of advanced spells like many of the members of the clan.
Her one spell known to her was Explosion where she was able to summon forth a devastatingly large incendiary detonation. Because she is absolutely obsessed with Explosion magic. However, the severe mana drain, combined with Megumin never using points to increase her mana, results in her always collapsing after casting and becoming completely immobile. This is especially notable because there are other known Arch Wizards who can use Explosion magic, can remain standing after casting, know at least one other skill, and can fight alone if necessary.
